I think that's crazy because if we ignore Deluxe, the game technically isn't even out yet.

This will probably blown after Sonic 3 releases.

Kinda disappointed with the animation, they are still using motion capture. It's better than usual, they are exaggerating their movements, and they do a really good job with expressions.
It's just that I never liked mocap in Sonic, then again this is probably the most consistent element in sonic games, dating back to SA2, so it's fair to say their animation direction are very intentional and intended to be this way for a while.

Do the games ever do poorly critically in Japan? I think I recall seeing the classics did sub-30 in Famitsu, but most post-90s game sort of hovered around low to mid 30s.

I don’t really keep up with reviews, Japanese or otherwise, tbh.

Same story here, I even re-upped my subscription and it didn't give me a "we already have your email" message, which is weird because the link I used to subscribe was from another one of the emails they sent to me.

That discussion about Sonic handling different got me curious. Rather than eye balling it by going back and forth, I just played them at the same time.

    • Played on a wired Arcade Stick
    • Played on the same machine with both games running
    • Both games are set to Window Mode at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60hz
    • All testing only done in Green Hill
    • Fresh install of Generations. Only one mod, the Direct 3D 11 mod.
Disclosure. This took me a couple of tries due to
    • I restart twice to get the game to sync up. Generations loads faster than X Generations by a second. Sometimes more if you restart when you're far into the stage.
    • Performance issues that would cause frame drops, stuttering, or input drops in one instance and not the other which would lead to the games not synching up. Issues happened on both sides. Don't think it's due to the game, just hardware level.
    • Generations in general isn't the most "solid" game. Runs would die because Sonic would just end up clipping into the terrain either slowing him down, stopping him or would just interact with objects in an inconsistent way (sometimes he would break through a monitor, sometimes he comes to a full stop). I tried to avoid things like running bridges, bouncing on enemies or colliding with monitors to avoid these random behaviors and causing a desynch. Issue happened on both sides, but the terrain bugs mainly occurred in X Generations. Some issues may be due to being a frame or two off between versions which could lead me to getting stuck in pass through terrain.
    • Automation sections are buggier than usual in Shadow x Generations. The loop into corkscrew set piece would cause most of my resets because Sonic would get stuck or shoot himself back up.
    • I'm just bad at this game.
For the most part, he handles exactly the same. Any differences that occurred were due to technical hiccups, desynchs, or one off issues like how Sonic would sometimes do a trick pose after bouncing on an enemy if you landed on them just right. Don't take my word for it, you can replicate this setup yourself. You just need HedgeMod, the Direct 3d 11 Render mod and set the config in it to keep the game focus while in the background.

See, i thought i was going nuts, pressing Square didn't do anything, maybe i read the information wrong or i am looking at a different menu

but no, i have seen another screenshot that does show the main menu, and the option to press Square is completely missing for me for some reason, i thought that okay, maybe i should visit the PSN store as they put it, but it only show Dark Beginnings, so i don't know what's going on

The main menu wherein you have the option to choose between Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations, but before you actually select either game. Not the title title screen that displays Sonic X Shadow Generations.

It's a pretty confusing setup, as the package kind of has two or three layers of title screens.

It's honestly funny to me that people think HE2 is the graphically inferior engine. HE1 was great for its time but the lighting bump is nutty and I love it (though higher resolution textures and shadows also helps a lot). Almost every choice regarding art direction in this game is the right one and I really hope Sonic Team sticks to this path because they've really nailed the mission statement of a playable Pixar movie with Shadow Generations. Bring on the freecam mod!

The lighting quality bump only happens if you have a powerful enough PC or console, else you're stuck with pastel graphics and lower performance. HE1 lighting looks pretty much the same across a much wider hardware range.

That's going to be fairly moot once Switch 2 or whatever it is comes out. We already know that's going to be comparable to PS4 Pro/Xbox One X and DLSS will allow it run games at a lower render scale to put more stock into performance without losing resolution on the front end. Even besides all that: yes, games look worse on less powerful machines. That doesn't take away from what Shadow Generations has achieved in really making this engine shine.

That’s what i meant tho, it’s completely absent for me

This is from twitter , here clearly i see “additional content” on bottom left, this is completely absent in my version of the game for some reason and i don’t know why, maybe i will grab a screenshot later for comparison but you should get the idea

That's strange then. I'd suggest going to your purchases and seeing what's listed there.

I hope there is a mod soon enough to remove the boost effect on the music. I HATE that, sega needs to stop doing that, it ruins the music.

Agreed. Considering that they even patched such an option into Frontiers, I'm surprised it's missing now. The boost filter on the music would be absolutely fine if boosting was only a novel and infrequent occurrence.

Let's just get rid the boost entirely plz. Shadow Generations is already the slowest boost game by a mile, and better for it.

Replace boost with a short burst. I love air boosting too much to little it go.
