Right now I'm highly doubting that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will be the only playable characters. They said originally only Sonic would be playable in Sonic 06...

I really couldn't resist posting this.

I also think that the whole Were-Sonic thing is being blown out of proportions. I admit, its unexpected, and its probably gonna be forced on specific levels ALA Super Sonic, but at least its something new. Just hope that the gameplay and the story make up for it. But then again, Sonic really shouldn't have a fleshed out story. Just a bare-bones story.

I don't want to spend too much time dwelling this topic, but I feel that I should bring up an important point regarding the game.

I personally don't understand how you guys can just forgive the fact that the development team wanted to make the game revolve around the concept of "Wolfman-Sonic". This, even though some of the art looks much better than any of the designs present in most of the recent Sonic games, is enough to just turn my head and disregard the game as another sub-par product churned by SEGA. Quite frankly, as John Solomon eloquently put it, "Shakespeare could have written an epic play about two households, both alike in flatulence, and no matter how flowery the language, no matter how clever the wit, it'd still be three fucking hours of fart jokes." Face it, a plot is what makes a game, and a well-designed engine and fun levels cannot save the horrible, cheesy, so horribly clichéd and overall lame plot that motivates a game.

To further illustrate this, suppose a game was made that was praised amongst developers for having an innovative engine and beautiful graphics, but the plot revolved around a transgender furry in pursuit of the greatest orgy of its life. Chances are, you would disregard this game as a huge joke, and for a very valid reason: The plot has failed to motivate you and intrigued you to the point of playing the game. Without a valid, well-thought out plot (although not always complex, sometimes the motivation of “Complete this task and compete with others” can satisfy the need of a plot), a game cannot and will not succeed to give the player a sufficient reason to play the game. Knowing that SEGA has once again churned out another winning idea like this is enough for me to abandon all hope regarding the game.

Actually, I disagree with you to a point. Sure its true that the fact a game's story can totally ruin the whole experience, but that's not how it is with all games. There are plenty of games that are praised as great games despite the story/lack of story/lack of quality story. I mean really, if that was the case, we wouldn't have so many games imported to be played in a foreign language before the game comes out in something that we can read/listen to. I mean for example. Brawl. It has a story, Subspace. But hell, we still love the game in Japanese or in English. I know the game's purpose isn't for the story, but really, Sonic isn't either. Sonic is a platforming game where we put in the game. Turn on the system. Pick up the controller. Press Start and go. We press right for a multitude of levels and jump over things and kill them. Mario hasn't had a "story" forever now. Sure we get that, "Princess/Bowser/Castle/Etc" thing, but that really isn't the primary point of the game. The point is to collect the stars, travel through the levels, and whoop bowsers' ass. Its the same with Sonic. We collect the Emeralds, and stop Eggman from ruleing the world. Sonic doesn't really NEED a story. What it needs is for Sega to pull their head out of their asses and make us a GOOD FUCKING 2.5D SONIC GAME. COME ON UNLEASHED.

But then again, this is my opinion, and obviously you don't agree as since we are arguing different points. ;D

  5. See, even a game that had a spiky-haired blonde that thought he was living the life of another fellow friend but ended up being just a regular soldier that was given too many radioactive injections by a mama's boy sounds bad when you talk about it like this.

    Working on my art!
Well I disagree. It's the game play that's important. Remember that in the original Sonic games there was almost no emphasis on plot at all. Fuck Sonic 1 had basically no plot. But they were great because of the gameplay.

And another example, Mario games. They possibly have the worst most over used plots of all time (LULZ Save the princess... again... 20 years later). Yet no one gives two shits about it because most Mario games are accepted.

This is Sonic. This is not Final Fantasy. Sonic may have shitty plots but in the end it's the crappy gameplay most people bitch about (Or arguably the voice acting is the most bitched about thing). Yes, Sonic plots are overly cliche generic plots which are complied from the ideas of everything ever made, but in the end, I hate Sonic 06 and other 3D Sonic games because they all played like shit.

Sonic Rush Adventure had a God awful plot but I still loved the game.

Obviously, a plot is only one of the methods to motivate a player to complete the game. In this case, though, this game does try to use a story to compel the player to play the game, and if the main motivator sucks, then the game's going to be a bad experience for the player. However, sometimes a game doesn't need a plot to motivate a player and just the competitive and strategic aspects of the game are enough.

I hate to break it to you, but collecting the Chaos Emeralds and stopping Eggman from ruling the world does qualify as a plot. You know, not everything has to be one long banal Final Fantasy 7 cut-scene for a game to qualify for having a plot.

Well collecting the Chaos Emeralds is pretty much mandatory. Hell, in earlier games, you really didnt NEED too, and in later games, it happens automatically. :/

Even in a few later games, you don't NEED to collect the Chaos Emeralds. More or less, with Sonic, we already know, "Beat Eggman." Like I said, We don't NEED it really, because we already know what it is. Like in Sonic Unleashed, we already know Eggman is probably doing something, and Sonic is trying to stop him, and Eggman pulls a fast one and turns Sonic into a were...sonic..

Im not saying it needs an FF7 plot, but hell. We don't need it because its pretty much guaranteed regardless. We see Eggman and Sonic somewhere on the box, and then bam, we get the plot.

    that's it really.

I understand Rainer's point though. Even with stellar gameplay, the werewolf Sonic is gonna be a HUGE turn off for many people. In fact, I still can't get over how unbelievably stupid it is, and it'll probably grate on my nerves the entire experience.

This might be the first Sonic game that I'll pass on the story altogether...if given the option that is.

Hahaha. Ill probably pay attention to the story for curiosities sake. I know if I don't, my curiosity is going to eat my alive and Ill kill someone trying to find it out.

I bet Link turning into a Wolf all of a sudden was a turn off for Zelda fans, but then that turn off was a turn on when some of them found out how the game was played with Wolf Link. It might be the same here. We don't know. And we won't know until Sega gives us some damn gameplay video with WereSonic.

I said it before and I'll say it gain

I'm still PRAYING for the Werewolf thing to be an April Fools joke, because this game really looks good and I see no reason to screw it up like that.

Ill laugh if this game turns out to be Badass and gets like a 9.7 on GameTrailers and the WereSonic parts become like the most amazing and awesome game mechanics in Unleashed and rocks everyones boxzorz, making the game like the game of the year of 2009 and 2008.

    The fucking hell?

Does anyone here play Sonic games mainly for the plot?

Anyone? Come on, raise your hand. Don't be afraid. We won't mock you.

    Much.

You talk as if these games were always about something epic that made nine-year olds want to get to the end.

Do you know what motivated me to keep going in Sonic games? The fucking game themselves. They were fun and cheerful platforming affairs that didn't drown me with text. They were a pick up and play thing. And although the story was the generic, bad guy is evil, stop bad guy, it never was the sole reason for me to get to the end. Ever.

Sonic Rush Adventure is filled with walls upon walls of text, with backstory fleshing out the world and characters.

I skipped all of that because I just wanted to get to the next level.

Sonic games don't need the shit you're describing. The only motivator it really needs at this point is to be a good game. A game that's so fun that you want to keep playing.

Team Fortress 2 has no plot at all, yet I still play it. But apparently I shouldn't be able to since there isn't a motivating force other than Team Blue are my enemies, stop Team Blue.

You're over thinking this franchise way too much.

No! Can't you reinvent the franchise without another faggot of a new character?
I wonder when Sonic will dress up as a plumber & save the Mushroom Kingdom.

Please don't post any info from the Wikipedia... They're constantly changing it, and even putting rumors as facts.

For example, nobody will know for sure which systems is this coming to, until SEGA says something.
