"Gerald" and "funny" were words that couldn't be further away, yet the movie pulled it just fine and made it work -Jim Carrey to be precise-, so who knows, maybe we will get a funny version of Metal Sonic somehow!

They could just have him reappear at the end of 4/do a Sonic Heroes thing where he's not actually in the game until the end, and it's Metal Sonic transforming itself into an Eggman look-alike the whole time.

See, but if you're just doing "Robotnik But Another One", it's just gonna call into question why you're not using the one you already have. Sonic 3's answer was to make one the secret super-villain and show off the VFX tricks for two Jim Carreys, are they just gonna do that again?

I don't disagree that they could make "funny Metal Sonic", though like with Gerald I'm not sure I'd agree with it as a fan (though I understand the concession, I don't actually like Funny Gerald). But you'd still have to give me an example of what kind of funny killer robot we'd be looking at for me to be convinced. Again I'm not saying all this stuff is impossible, just that Jim is a really really hard act to follow.

Yes. Tracking puts it in the $500m range.

I finally saw the third movie. IT WAS FRIGGIN AWESOME.

I think they made just the right amount of compromise in deviation from the SA2 story. They had to make the plot simpler for the sake of storytelling in a 2-hour movie aimed primarily at ages 5-12, and they did a great job of cutting out excess without spitting on the lore.

Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba did such a phenomenal job with their voice acting, and Jim Carrey was great playing 2 on-screen characters at the same time. I'm also impressed by how much they made me sympathize with Agent Stone in this story.

I rate this movie an 8/10, same as the first two Tobey Maguire Spider Man movies.

They messed up Sonic’s shoes in that pic on X. Looks like Tails style.

This just pisses me off, we are not saying the Sonic movies are anywhere close to the quality of Raimi's Spider-Man movies (Spider-Man 3 included, it's leagues better). They're a prime example of how these movies and Sonic 3 in particular just suck at balancing tone and including actual mature messaging and themes in a way that's accessible to anyone, including the youngest of viewers, even if they haven't grown into them yet.

Why are you using we like you speak for everyone?
I would definitely rate all 3 Sonics higher than Spider-Man 3.

In the end, it's simply a matter of personal tastes and rankings.
I don't see the need to feel salty or insulted by personal tastes...

I'm glad Jim Carrey's open to coming back, because he's the best thing all of the movies have to offer. At least to me.

And I am so glad they didn't go overly melodramatic either. I like having a reason to laugh in my life, after all.

If you think Spider Man 3 is better than the first two, I can't even figure out how to speak your language.

The format of a feature-length film puts a time constraint on movies that requires them to focus on developing no more than 2-3 characters in order to really do them right. Spider Man 3 had too many side plots, and ended not having enough time to flesh out Sandman, let alone Venom (Eddie Brock) who showed up late in the movie as an afterthought. Come to think of it, they didn't really do enough character development on Harry Osborn to make his actions make sense.

I'm also not trying to sealion you, but you can't just say "mature messaging and themes" without explaining what you expected. I'm not gonna lie though, I think you were probably expecting something unreasonably specific so it's likely moot anyway. Sticking to "revenge is not the answer" and "friends and family make life worth suffering for" was just enough for the kids in the audience to digest. Kids don't need some depressing 1970s sci-fi movie full of betrayals and moral ambiguity; a hopeful story about being a good friend is perfect. Hell, most adults could use a story where the good guy is basically good and his cause is basically worthwhile for once. I'm also glad they didn't waste time trying to shoehorn the entire plot of SA2 into the story, and I think the juxtaposition of Shadow's dour demeanor with Robotnik's typical Jim Carrey antics made for great pacing.

I thought they had a difficult task of harmonizing Shadow's pathos with every other character's quippy humor, and that they did a great job of making two things that are so disjoint work surprisingly well together. They even managed to give Agent Stone and Dr Robotnik some good

I stand by what I said: I liked Sonic the Hedgehog 3 about as much as I liked the first two Tobey Maguire Spider Man movies, which is to say it's pretty damn good. 8/10.

The more I think about this movie, the more I really, really like it. Lots of decisions and little touches that add up. For something to balance the "actually it's just our boring-ass Earth" aspect of this series with the absolutely batshit, fantastical nature of Sonic Adventure 2, while still serving as a sequel to the other movies, it does an outstanding job.

Watched a discussion with the makers and it was fascinating. I'm sure a bunch of you saw it too, but one of the most interesting parts was that these folks had to reconcile a change of perspective from higher-ups about the nature of Sonic's world versus the "real" (i.e human) world. Initially, there was this idea that these distinct settings were supposed to be separated worlds in the games, with Sonic and co. going through ring portals off-screen, but that obviously had a ton of (Angel Island-sized) problems associated with it so... now those movie makers kind of just have to deal with the initial hand they were dealt lol, despite a reversal on the official stance.

This situation worked out in a lot ways, at least to me. With this being a full-blown trilogy, it's easy for me to appreciate the first movie in particular as this kind of unique origin point that primarily serves to explain Sonic and Eggman's first encounter in this "real world Earth" setting, despite the movie's sort of rote nature. That setup is neat on its own, but the sequels then do quite a bit to follow up on that schism while seizing on the opportunity to adapt stuff from the games. The filmmakers have done such a great job in weaving between all of these circumstances to make something novel but still reverent to Sonic as a whole. Great stuff.
