Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe Thread (& Knuckles)

yeah I'd advise people who don't like crow for dinner to calm down a bit here. mufasa is a disney movie, on xmas, and the sequel to one of the biggest animated movies of all time in terms of box office, and that itself was the remake of another of the biggest animated movies of all time in terms of sheer cultural presence. there will be a TON of families going "oh mufasa is out, let's have a neat family outing" during christmas break even if they're not on twitter raving about it in the months beforehand. don't take anything for certain

 

How did you read "boasting" from this post? (Unless you read it in Japanese, and it subtextually just reads differently untranslated?)

 

Maybe boasting wasn't the right word to use. But it doesn't really feel in nature for them to say "We may overtake this massive movie" rather than to simply talk about Sonic's success in isolation.

I thought Mufasa was a prequel.

 

It is, unless we're being bait and switch about Mufasa's mythical journey in the afterlife.

Better term to use would have been follow up.

 

Just got the opportunity to watch the trailer, the shot of shadow with a gun gave me a big goofy grin. I love it!

Though I do think it's really, really dumb that Chao are just a random japanese cafe thing instead of being actual creatures that live on Knuckles' planet or something. I wish these movies would stop being coy with these lame references and just actually use the elements theyre referencing instead!

 

Yea imo if they’re gonna have Chao they really should’ve made them legit instead of a funny Easter egg

 

Holiday movies have legs for better or for worse. Avatar 2 opened to 70 million then legged itself to 2.4 billion by the end of its run. Aquaman 1 inexplicably became the highest grossing DC movie ever (yes more than The Dark Knight trilogy) by being decent and coming out during the 2018 Christmas season.

It's good to see people in Hollywood acknowledging these movies having a huge crossover audience and that Barbiehiemer like synergy is the exception not the norm and people will probably choose one over the other for their first viewing.

I expect Sonic 3 to still leg itself to 450 to 500 million but I equally expect Mufasa to clear 600 to 800 million by the end of its run, if well received.

Disney has been doing extremely well with sequels this year between Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 and I don't see that stopping if this movie is good.

Rooting for Sonic's success all the same.

 

(prequel is a contraction of pre-sequel. it's a sequel that's set chronologically before what it's a sequel to)

 

Yeah I won't lie, having the Chao just be fictional Sanrio-ish mascots in this universe is a bit of a letdown. Still hoping the scenes involving them are cute, though.

 

Plot twist:

In a post credits scene, it's revealed that the restaurant is actually ran by Purple Hair Girl, who modeled them after a species from her home planet

I don't care much about the movies, which is why I sometimes feel taken aback when I see stuff like this. For as weird and derivative the movies are, they're totally dedicated to the source material too.

 

The reference to Detective Pikachu and Pokemon was something I wasn't expecting! Pokemon is my second favorite gaming franchise next to Sonic so seeing it being mentioned made my day. xD

 

The state of the film franchise rn is a fluke imo. The first movie was pretty blatantly a cynical Hollywood “take” on Sonic, barely resembling the games outside of the character design. It’s been clear since though that they do want to properly adapt characters and iconic moments, even within the lens of this grounded, human centric world. Shadow’s story simply plays well to that due to the nature of his origin.

 

Please let a government figurehead be killed in the next movie and get revived due to time travel, please have them then kiss the CGI animal mascot, please make Jim Carrey wear the golden nipple suit, please somehow give Knuckles fuck-all to do and have a random GUN soldier fumble his line...

 

06 sonic and movie sonic basically feel like completely different characters in terms of personality so I have no idea how theyd play the romance plot if they smoked crack and decided to adapt it for some reason. Movie sonic would NOT do the "just smile" thing, he would make a pop culture reference or something

 

I would like a Sonic 06 adaptation
However separate from the current movie universe, and directed by either Tommy Wiseau or Neil Breen.

 

Gimme sonic 06 with a completely unchanged plot but with all the stories in chronological order and all animated like the CGI intros. Kino cinema would be back on the menu
