Because it's easy as crap, comparatively speaking, to make a film like that instead of actually creating a world different than our own?

It's like Danger Mouse at the North Pole, but that could at least be excused by budget constraints compared to a frickin' film.

lolwut? No he didn't. He made up his own lore that had nothing to do with Sonic (and was mostly ripped off from things like Star Wars and World of Krypton anyway), and basically tied it in by saying "oh yeah and Sonic is their friend/Knuckles is related to them." The dude was practically proud that he didn't like or care about Sonic or its lore, all he liked was trying to be an even crazier, but far less talented, version of John Byrne.

Oh, okay then. Nevermind. Glad we agree. (Yeah, we mostly agreed the whole time, but I wanted to join you in bashing Penders.)

Lately? If you count the last 20+ years as lately, I suppose. Biggest difference between now and then is that back then he didn't have the internet to share his views, and we had to rely on his "art" to see into his twisted mind.

These writers we do have seem like they may very well know their stuff, which is nice. It may very well be moot, though, if the movie is anything like the recent games, which don't really care about continuity anymore. We'll see once we get more info on the film, I suppose. Personally, I'm hoping for a Death Egg Saga thing, expanded with the extra backstory we got in Adventure (since that was basically just expanding on the backstory from the Japanese manuals for Sonic 2 and 3&K anyway). Not that I expect it to happen. I'm more expecting something along the lines of X, which I didn't care for at all. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

As for the live action/animated bit, I'm actually not too worried about it. Of all the things in the film that could make or break it, I think that's one of the less important factors.

Sorry that this is late, I am a new member to Retro.

About a month ago over on the SonicTheHedgehog subreddit, the writer for the upcoming Sonic film made a post about his new Facebook page. He was also answering a few questions in the comments. (Nothing too special, but some of it is interesting.)

It's been a while since I've last read it, so I don't remember much. I only skimmed through it, but I thought you guys would find it interesting. After reading it I have slightly higher hopes for the film though I won't say anything until we get at least one trailer.

    Here's a link: http://www.reddit.com/r/SonicTheHedgehog/comments/2a46pc/sonic_movie_writer_made_a_facebook_page_i_know/

Edit: Various grammar edits and such.

The candidness of his answers are lulling me into a sense of security. I hope it's not a false one.

Still, the fact he has shown how much of a fan he is has gone a long way towards relieving my doubt. That is, provided the studio doesn't force his script too far away from his vision.

I liked the reply of "Like Alvin and the Chipmunks only less Alvin and more awesome."

I have hopes, but like you said, the studio could possibly butcher the development...

..which isn't really way past cool.

So I guess lots of stuff is gonna get cut when inevitably execs want them to make it PG. :v:

EDIT: Actually I just realized that this does give this rumor posted in the thread earlier some credibility: http://www.tracking-board.com/tb-exclusive-sonic-the-hedgehog-gets-the-dark-knight-treatment-and-a-writer-shortlist/

I imagine it's less an attempt at Shadow, more of an attempt at capturing that Avengers-going audience as well as trick that subset of the fandom that thinks Sonic is a more mature and dark franchise than it really is into buying tickets.

What is this obsession about higher ratings? I mean, what are the expectations for a Sonic film? Blood, gore, guts, and mediocre-to-abyssmal standings on Rotten Tomatoes like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Doom, or Postal? What exactly is the boundary between PG and PG-13 anyway? Profanity and suggestive dialogue (Guardians of the Galaxy say "Hi" from atop their big pile o' money)? Are we getting an ass-shot?

I know that they're trying to update him and his 'tude, but I don't think a PG-13 rating is really necessary. You can have a 'suitably' dark film with a lower rating, given the character and his respective universe in question. I mean, not every G and PG* movie is sunshine and lollipops, right? ... Right?

    * + - This was especially the case for films initially rated PG before PG-13 was introduced in the mid-'80s.

    EDIT:

Actually, now that I think of it, what would SatAM get these days? I mean since it predated the TV rating system by a few years.

Movie ratings are weird. PG-13 can get away with a lot, yet it doesn't take a lot for a film to get a PG-13 rating. It's become the most marketable rating for films. Dark enough to appeal to the general audience, while clean enough to not turn off a lot of people. Not sure if PG-13 is the best route for a Sonic film though.

I think everybody both here and SSMB are just blowing this PG-13 thing out of hand, I'm sure its not gonna be more then a G-rated movie content wise but PG-13 just gives them more freedoms then a G-rated movie would.

Yeah... Like I said, "it doesn't take a lot for a film to get a PG-13 rating". Overtime, it kind of became the new PG and PG became the new G. Almost nothing is rated G anymore that has any sense of darkness at all.

Holy shit, why is nobody talking about the fact that Marza is animating it? Knowing that Sony/Columbia/Whoever aren't doing the animation makes my hopes for this MUCH greater. Marza know what they're doing, and the fact that it's in-house will make the whole shebang a lot closer to the source material.

If you people haven't seen Harlock yet, get on Netflix right fucking now. It's one of the highest rated animated films on the site.

There shouldn't be much in a Sonic movie to push it past a G rating. PG at most. A lot of kids' animated movies (Frozen, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph to name 3) have been getting PG when they would have gotten G like ten years ago, so I can kind of understand that.

    PG-13 is just silly.

All I can continue to say is that if it's like the Progressive commercial or that new Boom: RoL commercial, it may not be half bad. Marza is a big plus on this too, they're gonna ace this at least in the art department.

Robichaux has already said he's not writing a script that takes itself in either a 'Smurfs' or 'Transformers' direction. That's very big words to live up to, so uhh, I hope he knows what he's doing and doesn't let execs interfere that much and make it absolute poop. But then again, I wouldn't put it past Sega's higher ups..

It actually wouldn't be that bad if Sony Pictures Animation animated it. Aside from the Smurfs movies, the animation in their movies is great. See Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

the problem is, I'm really suspicious why they need those freedoms in the first place. what do they need they couldn't have done with a PG?

EDIT: Also yes see the Captain Harlock film, in HD if possible. Story's anime nonsense but visuals are amazing.

Please tell me this looks like way better in motion or something because I'm not seeing any of the old Toei charm in any of it

Honestly you'd have had a better time selling this to me under the reasoning of "Oh, yeah, the Night of the Werehog guys are doing this -- or, you know, like the cool intro cinematic in Unleashed?"
Something to convince me they can do something that actually looks like it has a margin of soul to it.
