Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

Honestly, I think Sega’s marketing has done a great job showcasing this. The SGF and Nintendo Direct trailers highlighted the game’s co-op which will appeal to casual audiences. Then the game’s demo at SGF showed that the classic physics and gameplay loops have been replicated. Then at Sonic Central they prominently featured Ohshima to appeal long time fans. This has been an impressive balancing act from Sega. Compare the quality of Superstar’s marketing to Frontiers and it’s night and day

 

I mean we can go further! Compare this to the marketing in almost any Sonic game Sans-Mania in nearly the last decade. Superstars is such a monumental step up in the marketing department its hard to believe. They now seem to know how to hit the right on the right areas without over saturating it. Foregoing the same stuff that has become stale in the years since they started spamming the sonic Nostalgia tour in 2010.

 

I miss those 10 seconds long teaser trailers showing Sonic's feet at best, and then expecting us to wait six months for another teaser with another 10 seconds.

 

Why wasn’t this game revealed as Project Sonic 2023, this isn’t the series I used to love

 

I'm not so sure. The music is so upbeat and festive that it made me think it was a Special Stage theme instead. Its length is also much longer than the usual title screen theme.

 

It's a brave new world. We're just going to have to learn to love Sonic games.

 

Impossible, the people who hate Sonic games the most are Sonic fans

Come to think of it, it is definitely more fitting of a Special Stage or Save Select.

 

It's giving me S3D Saturn special stage vibes, to I lean more to it being a special stage theme.

 

Because we know what could be and what the latest games aren't. This is true for any once-great franchise in media.

 

I think this is a case of your fantasies never being quenched. Will you ever learn that your actions have consequences?

 

Even though HD art has already been revealed, the fact that Trip is a masked character is simulating that feeling of mystery I got from seeing Knuckles or Mighty for the first time from blurry screenshots and being excited to find out what they really looked like.

 

God, we need more songs like these.

 

I get the vibe that maybe we won't find out what she looks like? Maybe she's a Shy Guy type character where you just never see her face and we get a non-reveal where her helmet comes off but she's off screen and we just see the playable characters freaking out over her actual face.

Sonic Japan posted a bit of Sonic Superstars gameplay in Bridge Island Zone. It includes Special Stage and boss gameplay as well.

 

I think I'd actually be okay with this. It would be pretty interesting to have such an unusual Sonic character in contrast to some of the more recent modern cast that feel like they're adhering to a template.

 

I wish they'd stop screaming over each other for a second, I'm trying to hear the OST. It's definitely not Sonic 4 synths (it has the same feel as the trailer music, really), and it sounds...okay. It's hard to pick out a melody like this, but it sounds like the boss themes are the same here as SGF, and the stage clear theme is straight-up reused from Mania. I'm willing to bet the OST just isn't finished, but they clash pretty heavily.

 

If the instrumentation follows suit with Mania, I don't think there's much need for a new Act Clear jingle. Either way, I think it's pretty clear at this point that we aren't getting the second coming of Sonic 4, so the list of my concerns is very short at this point. Really, the only big one is level design. It's been a bit of a mixed bag so far, but I think the worst that Superstars can be given what we've seen is in the average-solid zone.

2. The sounds like the placeholder boss themes weren’t placeholders after all. I like the level theme though.
