I agree with just about everything except this part regarding Heavy Shinobi. The only issue I have with that boss is poor telegraphing; his vulnerable phase is when he's mid-jump in what looks like a attack, whereas his actual invulnerable phase just has him standing still and looking defenceless. It's also not obvious that you can destroy the grounded Asterons.

But otherwise, he's an example of a cycle based boss done right. In fact, would you even call him cycle based? What's important is that he can't be spammed or beaten by brute force. You're never waiting around for long against him. You get a chance to attack every time that he jumps, which is very frequently because its his both method of movement and how he launches projectiles in the firm of Asterons. It presents the player with a choice - do you focus on Shinobi to get battle done quickly, or do you stop to clear the field of Asterons to make the fight less difficult? Getting frozen is Aldi only a mild hindrance, because it doesn't cause damage and can even work to help your defense at times.

There's never that level of depth in Superstars.

Yea but at least they can be redesigned with some tweaks to look like they're Sonic characters without changing their looks completely. Or in other words at least they're a bit closer to looking like Sonic characters :p. Tbh I'm not a huge fan of the freedom fighters either, but their designs in post reboot archie are alright.

  3. I finally started playing this.... I don't like playing as Knuckles.

    Update notes on Steam:
I just downloaded the update on Switch too. No word on the bug fixes yet. I'm hoping for (but not expecting) a patch to fix all of Knuckles' minor issues. Can't believe that after hardly being playable for like 15 years, he got done dirty twice in the space of about a month in two new games.

Well at least they made up for it on Frontiers. I haven’t tried this patch yet. I just got home and will test it now.

On Amazon, Target, Walmart, Gamestop, and Best Buy's websites Sonic Superstars is going for $30 and only Best Buy and Target mention that as a SALE price so I think it's been permanently discounted to $30 across the board.

I'm guess the $60 price tag was just for the hardcores who wouldn't mind paying full price for a game like this but now it's going to be at a price that's more appealing to casuals who just want a new game and have some fondness for Sonic. Just thought I'd mention that here.

Knuckles has two major problems, the first of which being his nerfed gliding. In S3K and Mania, Knuckles gradually speeds up the longer he's in midair. This doesn't happen in Superstars - he remains at a fixed speed, which means you don't get quite as much distance and doesn't really feel as nice to use.

The second and arguably bigger problem is his strange climbing behavior. For some baffling reason, Knuckles doesn't always properly stick to walls. On rare occasions he'll just immediately jump off upon attaching to the wall. It's not common but it is extremely annoying to say the least. I don't remember if this was fixed in patches or not, because I haven't played as Knuckles in a while.

He also has a few other odd quirks, such as his sliding recovery time being longer, and having the standard jump height instead of being lower than the rest. Still not sure how to feel about that change.

I don't know if this was discussed before, but there are 2 musics in the music bank that are copy/pasted straight from Sonic 4 Ep II: Metal Sonic theme and Death Egg Mk.II act 1.
    They are Bank900#45 and Bank900#46.
    That is pretty funny.

I don't suppose the Switch version's update has fixed the performance issues when using Super Tails in Bridge Island Zone? Not had the chance to test it out post-patch yet - prior to the patch, I was getting severe frame drops with him when using the Super form on this stage, down to like 10fps. Never had that trouble on any of the stages past Press Factory, but haven't tested on all the stages before that as I've not had the chance to revisit the game as of yet. I hope it's been fixed - I found it really annoying, as Tails is usually my favourite character to play as, and not being able to use my reward for getting all the Emeralds on that stage feels like a bit of a slap in the face.

I fixed the music for Golden Capital

EDIT: I should note, just in case you don't check out the video description, I didn't write that song. I sure wish I did though!

Yeah I think you are right! I played through that boss again and it is light years ahead of Superstars. In general, even when Manias bosses are overstaying their welcome they have nothing on Superstars.

  17. Emerging from a long slumber to ask: what's the consensus, is this game worth like 30 bucks? I'm aware of all the issues (and being a Sonic fan I guess I'm already a glutton for punishment, so this is probably pointless to ask), but does the rest of the game compensate even a little bit?

I think the game is pretty great for the most part. The bosses are annoying on replay and Press Factory act 2 is a total pain, but overall its a good game with good level design and great physics imo. Trip's story is kind of annoying as well but I don't have to replay it so I don't really care.

It all depends on how much you can tolerate the inconsistent soundtrack, uneven presentation, questionable-at-points difficulty, and drawn-out bosses - though that one isn't in effect as much on your first playthrough. For $30, I don't think you can go wrong with Superstars. The game absolutely scratches the classic Sonic itch.

Get it now before they announce the inevitable Plus DLC.

It's a Sonic game, there's rarely such a thing as a consensus. Personally, it was my favorite game last year, but I'll try to be a little more measured.

I think if you like 1-3K and Mania, you'll probably find enough to like here at a $30 price. I saw someone the other day compare it to Sonic 1, in that it's got an air of "first installment syndrome." It's trying some new ideas, and some of them land unevenly to various degrees, but the core is really strong. And it's easy to imagine how a sequel could polish up those rough edges into something that really shines.
