Shoes'll probably be some kind of equipment (which makes me sad, because I had the idea first, but haven't been able to implement it yet -- this will probably go for a whole hell of a lot of what's going into Sonic Horizon, but them's the breaks)

Honestly, I think it'll work out fine. Mario worked out MAGICALLY with RPGs (to the point where he's almost a better RPG series character than a platforming character). Give it a chance before you shit on it, guys.

Even taking that into account, I think shields seem like the more logical choice. I mean... rings on your fingers somehow protecting your whole body? If it was the one ring, then I suppose...

    Welp, this.
Iizuka apparently said something about Adventure originally being an RPG concept back in '98, but it was only that—a concept.

Typically, the text of the interview seems to have disappeared.

I think he was merely stating that after you got raped and proven wrong several times over, you changed the subject, such as changing the subject to a cup of tea. Which I doubt was *SPILLED*.

    Oops, sorry.

    1. On the subject of Sonic Adventure: early press HAD mentioned plans for it to be an RPG or RPG-styled game; if you REALLY want me to scan the EGM preview special article I will; even so, I stand behind the statements already made that it is not really an RPG, nor was it ever planned to be one beyond the intial planning stages (I mean, I can almost imagine Iizuka standing there, in front of a bunch of staff members looking at him as if he were insane, shouting excitedly, "C'mon! We need to do something different! All the previous 3D games sucked! I've GOT IT!! AN RPG!! That would do it! Where Sonic goes around THROUGH ALL THE LEVELS and has to beat all the badniks and collects the animals inside, who will increase his stats for later levels! NO NO NO NO NO! Too much like Flickies' Island... (Oh that's right, it wasn't released on Saturn here) ...but that animal/stats thing is good. Someone write that down. But while we're at it, what if, like in that Game Gear game with Tails, we put all the emeralds in the levels to be collected!! Yeah, get rid of those special stages that interrupted the flow of the gameplay! Wha-at?? Why are you all looking at me like that??"

    2. I'm of the opinion that this could be good if they do something even remotely resembling Tails' Adventures, which was a great game that, while not the speediest in the bunch, used a decent modification of some of the mechanics to create what I think has a strong RPG influence (though still clearly of the platform variety). I realize that the Japanese RPG mechanics are usually turn-based (I remember seeing an article on Wikipedia about the differences between US RPGs (usually LOTR-based characters (orcs, goblins), real time, and published for PC) and J RPGs (turn-based, use of techno-based enemies in addition to fantasy mainstays, cuter atmospheres, and for consoles) -- I recommend that anyone who asked before take a look at it). If this game uses turn based play, it will suck. However, KOTOR was real-time; if Shadow the Hedgehog was a sucessful RPG rather than a crappy "shooter" (please note that I haven't played anything after the original SA, in its PC remake), it would probably have similarities to KOTOR, what with the whole good/evil changes -- and it would have to be real-time to convey a sense of speed or urgency.

    3. Could you imagine, in the middle of a staff meeting, after a period of calm that might take the length of time for an average person to read that second note, if Iizuka suddenly started shouting in the middle of a staff meeting, with a setup like, "Yes, I think the revival of the snowboarding and pinball concepts, and a Panzer Dragoon game based on the wing-walking levels are great ideas, but I think we need something new, something to get everyone talking, something nobody will expect. (pause) FISHING!! YES, THAT'S RIGHT, FISHING!! Can't you just see it now?? A character whose only mission is to catch fish!! That's something no Sonic fan would ever expect in a game! It'll be huge!! Really catch them off guard!!! And what if that character is slow? It'll get them really into the fishing game!! Seriously, they'll be talking about it for years in the future [True, dat -- ??]!!!

Heh. Watch me make fun of Iizuka's love of the dramatic, pseudo-cinematic, glitzy sequences over mature game development (Sure, Sonic 1 wasn't the fastest, but everyone in my family agrees it was the hardest, and in that sense, the most replayable*)! (Did you know that Takashi Iizuka is also the stage name of a Japanese wrestler? Now you know!!)

    * Seriously, sometimes I feel brain dead while I play Sonic 2, Sonic CD or Sonic 3K because I know the levels by heart and there's no real difficult platforming elements. (They're still great games, though.) Sonic 1, however, still remains a challenge, and those special stages (What was that Konami, Super Castlevania IV rotated a whole room to show off how great Mode 7 is?? LOOK AT THIS!!) are STILL damn hard, even though I'm quite confident of the layout of them. But go on back to the discussion of a Sonic RPG. Please.

Well, that's usually what's added in RPGs (along with other genres) to up the hours (or increase replay value) to fully finish a game (for those who are actually going for 100% completion). Side-quests, mini-games, and if possible, multiple endings.

Of course, what made Big's fishing suck was that it was a requirement rather than a 'side-quest'... Well, that and it's fucking fishing. :P
