  1. Well, Sonic R is my favourite Sonic game (perhaps the only 3D Sonic game that I like). I like the graphics, the courses, the vast amount of characters to choose, the various type of games you can play, the music, everything... Although almost everyone thinks the controls are bad, in my opinion, I don't think so.

This game is in my opinion underrated, and I easily rate this in my top 10 favorite video games. The only real gripe I have about it is the lack of tracks, but quality over quantity anytime. Sure, the game hasn't aged too well and the graphics are shit, but it's definitely a great game for what it's worth.

its a pretty nice game, but its hindered by the not too effective controls.

The game would be one of my favourite if the controls weren't so slippy, it's still a good game, especially in multiplayer. Though I like Mario Kart more.

Without stepping on anyone's toes, I'll just say that I think Sonic R is a deeply flawed game. However, despite it's flaws, it's filled to the brim with content. Personally, I was able to get around the flaws and found a very enjoyable game, but I don't look down on anyone who couldn't.

But it's nowhere near my top 10 games list. Not by a long shot.

I played this game to death on my Saturn. The multiple paths and the *shudders now* music was awesome. A combination of the speed and some of the more beaty parts of the music really given you a nice rush. Multiplayer was good if no one pick super sonic :)

I used to continually play this game when I was little. I love the music, I liked the characters and I liked the look of the stages. The controls are also not as bad as people say so either.

The main that is bad about the game however is that it is extremely easy, and rather short with only five courses, but it is quite fun while it lasts.

The low quantity of tracks and complete lack of character balance are my only real gripes with it. Very fun game to time attack, and I occasionally start a new file just for the fun of unlocking everything again.

Love the game, but it's just so short... Fun while it lasts though!

I love the PC version and found it quite easy to control. Saturn version less so in that regard. Pity it doesn't run on this machine; it's very disappointing.

Some of the best level design in a Sonic game. Gotta love those hidden alternate paths and shortcuts.

I'll put my two cents and remark that Jon Burton said in an interview that Sonic R was originally a Formula 1 game and Sega told them to change it into a racing Sonic game. So for having crappy controls, it's actually good if you consider what it was originally...

Actually I must be the only one that things the controls weren't crappy. I mean, I can control Sonic perfectly in Yabause even in narrow paths (and it's known that Yabause fails miserably at framerate), I assume they must be good enough to actually be useable =P

  12. Also, from all Sonic racing games, I think this is the one that better fits Sonic. Sonic is know for his speed on foot, not for is speed on vehicles, as seen on Sonic Riders and Sonic Drift. This is the last Sonic game from the "old" generation. I never liked too much Sonic games since Sonic Adventure.

HOLY SHIT, are you serious? That's one hell of a conversion... o_O I mean, sure it's still a racing game, but wow.

I really enjoyed Sonic R, I like many others just wish it would have had more tracks.

making cool music no one gives a shit about
The only time it was fun for me was when whoever else was playing was Super Sonic, and I was Tails Doll. =P

Same deal. Someone needs to get it running on Vista/7. =(

I liked the game quite a bit, and the infamous Tails Doll Curse stories that went around after ammused me incredibly.
I think they should do Sonic's racing games like this, considering it's the ONLY racing game where he actually uses his own two damn feet, and not technology to race.

Even though we've had this topic before, it's interesting to see how Sonic Unleashed's control style was so similar - it was like half racing during the day stages, and somehow it worked perfectly. Who knew such elements could be so effective? Especially in the Wii version, he controls like a car, just like in Sonic R, only he's faster and he can boost, drift, and turn backwards. What's amazing is that when you stop to think about it, they probably almost could've done something more like Unleashed back in the Saturn days if they wanted to, which would've been awesome.

And yes this game is awesome and totally addictive. I completed like six files in a row last summer just out of boredom (seeing as it only takes like maybe an hour to complete one file for me, anyway). As a platformer - which it isn't - it's atrocius, yes, but as a racing game with platforming elements mixed in, it's awesome.

I used to play this game all the time when I first got it on the PC. I actually got very used to the controls once I managed to get a hang of the corner buttons (forgot the exact term), they work wonders combined with the directional keys/pad. Still, in retrospect, it could have done with a lot more - there's a complete lack of character balance, for instance. I'm fine with Super Sonic having no disadvantages (seeing as how he had no advantages whatsoever in the Sonic Riders series), but other characters like Eggrobo have no advantages either, and some of the special abilities, like the missile, were useless and nigh unusable. There also weren't enough tracks; five more would have sufficed, I think.

It would have been interesting to see Sonic Riders turn out much like how Sonic R did, though. As fun as that game may be, it's not really much of a Sonic game (so much as a game with Sonic characters in it), whereas Sonic R combined plenty of Sonic elements and made them work at a decent pace.

I wholeheartedly agree here. More environments would make the game more interesting, and taking only like an hour to unlock everything, it's rather short.
