Sonic Lost World (Wii U, 3DS, PC) Megathread

I'm also someone who thinks Generations was overrated. The art direction and music was superb, but only Classic Sonic was actually fun. Sure, Modern Sonic was an improvement over Unleashed (which I consider one of my more disliked Sonic games, seriously, the amount of bad design decisions in that game is appalling) and Colours (which was kinda medicore). But the Modern gameplay established by those three games? Total dead end in terms of where they could go with gameplay, Generations was the absolute peak.

Which is why I'm glad they're going this route, even if the execution isn't quite right. Sure, it's not nearly as fast, but GOTTAGOFAST isn't why I play Sonic games for. The parkour and speed tier mechanics are a huge step in the right direction when it comes to enabling both faster speeds and more precise platforming, and could do wonders for more open level design.

On the other hand, the lack of momentum-based level design is a bit of a downer, and I don't know what the hell they were thinking with the multi-targeting homing attack, it just demonstrates how stupid the whole HA mechanic is, and seriously breaks the flow.

On the whole, though, I will eventually be getting this game, and I look forward to playing it, because it does look like a lot of fun.

 

Compared to Adventure Unleashed is a gem.

But I'm too, excited for Lost World, I'm even thinking about getting a Wii U

 

I really wanted one more crack at an HD Modern Sonic gameplay with new levels after Generations. I think I would have been content with just one more, but I understand Generations being the capstone of the duality Modern and Classic had, and to then try and blend the two styles. There was not a lot of room for improvement in the design for just Sonic. Perhaps if Sonic Team wasn't so frightened to add more playable characters there could have been some expansion.

I still can't let go of the notion that Lost World is a prelude to a Mario & Sonic platformer. Everything screams it except for the outright dismissal by Sonic Team :specialed: .

 

I feel like any Sonic character would easily out do anything a Mario character can do, and that's why I don't see a combo platformer working. Now that Sonic has the wisps, he can basically do everything Mario can do, only faster and more effectively.

I'd prefer a Mario and Sonic RPG in light of the Mario and Luigi series.

 

Generations did so much wrong in my opinion. It takes control away after hitting ramps, springs, corkscrews (alongside various physics issues), the background was too much visual noise and caused it to be impossible to see what was going on when moving fast, the 3D sections were boring to look at and play, nothing seemed to flow properly, the hub was a downer, the animation was sub-par for classic Sonic and the story was hardly worth mentioning. I gave it so many chances to wow me and be fun, but it never did that. I bought the game -twice- hoping it would be good this time through, and it still wasn't. I wasn't even comparing the game to previous Sonic titles, but to platformers in general. The only thing the game had going for it was the music. I actually had more fun playing Unleashed Wii and that's a bit silly considering I hate it quite a bit.

 

Unleashed Wii more fun than Generations? Now I've heard it all.

Scratch that, still waiting for someone to claim that Black Knight is better. Don't let me down, Retro.

I thought someone already said that they preferred Sonic 06 over Generations in one of the other threads.

Either way, I'd say Lost World looks different. It's not better or worse than the previous games, just different.

we need to play through it before we judge whether it's better or worse and scold SEGA for making this game/not making this game soon enough.

 

I prefeer 06 to generations lol I know it's an almost unplayable game, but I like the adventure formula much, much, much more than the unleashed-colors-generations formula. And I think I'm going to like the Lost World formula over that too...still have to try it, though.

Ok, God tier mode then. Someone must think Tiger.com Sonic Jam or Sonic Labyrinth is better then Generations.

 

Sonic 4 hack of Speedy Gonzales and Sonic Jam 6 are better than Generations.
Or at least I thought they were worth more when I bought them.

Yes, I'm dead serious. Do you know why? Because initially, when Sonic 2006 was first released, I ended up having low expectations for it, but somehow, I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. Generations, on the other hand, I ended up having high expectations for, and it turned out to be a complete letdown.

 

Echo. Sonic 06 was so bad it was good, I had way more fun playing it and impressing my then-girlfriend with glitches than I did trying to enjoy Generations.
