SEGA needs a reboot. I've not played unleashed, nor have I felt inclined to. So few innovative ideas come from this company I used to practically worship.

I hope its better than most reviews make it out to be, but still as a gaming icon Sonic deserves better.

I hope I am wrong, but I don't think I will ever feel the same way for SEGA's games the way I did when they were an innovative console maker.

Unleashed seems to be the only successful 3D Sonic game since like SA2 so I think we'll be seeing more of it soon

    Knowing Sega, very soon.

  3. Considering SA2's popularity solidified its formula for several more games (even with the odd mechanic change, like team control), that's probably an accurate prediction.

I think the reasoning behind a reboot is more about getting attention than actually rejuvenating the series. There's very little continuity as-is, and there was never an explicit declaration in 1998 that said, "Fang is gone". That's not to say we won't see Shadow and Knuckles again, but their story presence is certainly declining.

Personally I'd go one step further. Stop putting Amy in games. Knuckles at least has some interesting gameplay. Amy had no role in Unleashed. Like at all. But either way they did a good job of cutting out the crap characters (I'll admit though I miss Knuckles... but I guess if you can't play as him I don't want to see him. He's not really a plot device)

As for the next main Sonic game... I'm guessing a 20th Anniversary game, and I bet it will be sick (Unleashed mixed with retro I'm guessing)

  5. You gotta have a female character somehow. Blaze would fit the bill of a characterized, important female character with possibilities for unique gameplay, but she's not as iconic yet, and doesn't have as obvious a relationship with the others. The whole alternate dimension thing also strains the possibilities a bit, unless the next Rush strands her in Sonic's world.

Not really. Most classic Sonic games had no female characters, except for Sonic CD. This sort of obligatory female character thing has been around since Adventure, when Amy got a recurring role. And lately (Since Chronicles) Amy seems to be taking over the role of third most important hero (which was Knuckles).

Granted there is some good to this. Due to the plot behind Knuckles he's not needed in every game, and in fact it doesn't make sense for him to be in any games, like Sonic 06. Apparently he's supposed to be guarding that emerald of his. Not in that game. In fact he doesn't even mention the island in that game, but he did give it a blurb in Sonic Heroes. Personally I just don't like Amy too much. There's not much to her except to follow Sonic around, and Tails does a pretty good job of that but he doesn't get in the way (Unless this is a Sonic 2 special stage).

I mean this is just the retro fan in me saying to limit the characters to Sonic, Tails, and Robotnik, with some lesser roles for Knuckles and Metal Sonic (Like bosses or non essential playable characters). I guess Amy could fit in that combination, but ugh.

Personally I want to see a Sonic game where not only they limit the characters (They did a great job of that with Unleashed), but they also don't make any new characters (Most of the new characters in Unleashed were failures. Mainly the Werehog, but I wasn't too fond of Chip taking the sidekick spotlight away from Tails. That should have been Sonic and Tails at the end of act screen D: ). At least this is the first Sonic game in a while to only have 2 playable characters, and not 6+ (I do not consider Sonic and WereSonic the same character).

This - tails should follow sonic in levels and carry him over ravines and such. And be playable with the second controller.

To continue Dude's idea - Why not have it so you press a button, and you could switch to Tails for certain points if need be? But to prevent Tails from being overused in Single-player with Sonic, they could put some arbitrary limit on him - Make it so he can't homing attach, limit his flying capabilities, etc.

Why should there have to be a limit? What if you want to play as Tails instead of Sonic?

See this is why I like S3&K. All the characters basically play like Sonic, but they have slight differences that make each have their own unique experience. I want to see more of that please. There has to be a nice medium between SA2 and Sonic 1 right?

One thing that they should do in the next Sonic game is make Tails important. He's a boring shitty character in the new games. Make him fun. He doesn't have to be a Daxter clone like Chip was, but give him something to do and be interesting.

  11. This is why I like Riders so much - there's individual paths that you can take, depending on what character you chose. Not as intense as S3&K, I know, but it's there.

There's two parts of me - one part that says "SA2 had good ideas by making each level character-specific, so each memorable area and music was encapsulated as only for that character", but another that wants complex, sprawling level design that depends on who you choose as your character. Is it possible to have it both ways? Why not have a mostly 2.5-D game with various paths, but Special Stages that are quick 3D jaunts (like, a checkpoint or two in length by SA2 standards)? It would even make sense for Knuckles: each Special Stage could have him finding each part of the Master Emerald, and once you collect them all, you can use the ME to power up!

Or, why can't we go like the classics, and just make Tails playable, and just have a story for Sonic that's 100% ... Sonic.

It'd surely keep some people, like me, happy.

I have a few ideas on what to do with Tails, it's inspired by this time when I introduced a non Sonic fan to Sonic Adventure. I played all the levels that include Tails as Tails, and was able to keep up pretty well. I think I have the Dreamcast's excellent analog stick to thank for this.

Tails would be absent unless there's a second player, player 2 can jump in and Tails will fly in from off screen (To make sure he actually flies in and not just appear, the game will ensure that his spawn point is not being rendered). I prefer Sonic alone when I'm playing on my own, Tails tends to screw stuff up.

Tails is under the second players control, but remains within a fixed distance. This fixed distance shrinks at high speed to keep Tails from getting caught on stuff. When Sonic is going this fast, there's little point to giving the Tails player control, he'll just get lost off screen most likely, something I'm specifically trying to minimize. It's jarring and it plucks control away from the player. The second player can grab Sonic out of the air with a single button press in order to rescue Sonic from whatever. They can also use a radar devise to search for secrets. And you can still do the trick where Tails takes all the risks.

So I'm kind of taking the best parts of "Co-Star mode" and Sonic Advance 3's two player with a little bit of Chaotix thrown in to make it work.

Because Tails could never homing attack, and his flying ability was never infinite in gameplay, as far as I remember.
    Hi, Sonic 2 and 3.
Kind of. But not have them attached to you. More like, "Sonic 2 and 3 if you could switch to Tails whenever you wanted."

Basically, make it so than Sonic and Tails can buddy up on stages, and Knuckles does his solo thing getting through levels. You could even make them similar levels, but Knuckles certain abilities (Punching, gliding, climbing) to make it so he can be places that not even Sonic and Tails combined could.

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
Personally, I'd be fine if things went in a Sonic Adventure 2 direction again. Split in teams, have a bunch of characters each with there own playing-style assigned to the teams, focus not just on Sonic but also on the supporting-cast, add some cool story and ya got me happy.
    And, more Senoue.

    IMO,
Almost-full reboot (like, keeping 4 characters or so. See Jan Abaza's post). At least from Adventure series (EDIT:but cutting down few characters. See next post) Why?

Because current Sonic is gay; SEGA is now gay; everything on Sonic is now gay after the Adventure series (minus Advance 1/3 and Unleashed, which were pretty acceptable). It's gay because the ideas are poor (for the god's sake, Sonic with a Sword? Is this now Zelda?), history is nice...considering you're 3.

Characters. For the god's sake, I really think that 4 or so are enough (a game with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman only would be nice). We don't need a new character per game.

What can we expect? Well, a Sonic game with over 9000 characters, with lots of glitches...

    How can they improve?
    This.

I really hope SEGA hear us, but since they really don't give a single fuck to what we think, then... Sonic's dead (considering it stays this way).

Sorry if I sounded way too harsh. Just what I think.

EDIT:Wow, longest post I ever did (excluding from my hack). :v:
