While I was discussing recent Sonic games with a friend I remembered an interview where Unleashed was shown off. Someone asked if old Sonic levels would be remade, and Balough says "stay tuned". The relevant bit is at 2:30 onwards in the video. I remember shitting a brick at the time but then I obviously forgot about it due to the time that passed...but it makes me wonder how long the idea of old remade levels were on Sonic Team's mind.

Apologies is this has been mentioned before!

Agreed, generations is extremely well engineered. They've finally found something that works well and I hope they keep going in this direction instead of bowing to pressure to make something 'innovative' and 'new'

There's a lot of good in the current approach, but I think after one or two more games with the same formula, it would be nice to see what Sega can do with an engine built for near-future tech rather than stick with a five-year-old game system. By all means, make a couple more of this style, with 60fps 1080p being the baseline instead of 30fps 720p. After that, exploring new, perhaps more open-world environments, like some of the fan games I've seen, would stop the formula from getting too stale. Heck, after four (five counting CD) games, the original series was starting to feel stale with reviewers at the time.

I'm pretty sure that that was just a generic PR answer. In the same interview he also confirmed that Shadow and Knuckles would be in Unleashed, which turned out to be completely false.

  6. How do you figure? Shadow was undercover as a professor while GUN wasn't doing anything to figure out why the planet was in pieces.

I couldn't tell ya 'bout Knuckles though.

I heard you were supposed to be able to play as Shadow in the day levels and Knuckles in the night level as a reward for collecting all the sun and moon medals. I'm sure that could just be a completely bogus rumor though.

Shadow could have easily been DLC, and I imagine a lot of kids or something would have bought it. All it'd have taken is replace the model. The Knuckles bit wouldn't have been so easy though, since he isn't quite Stretch Armstrong XD

Yeah, with absolute certainty that that was a bogus rumour that some kid heard from his best friends uncle who works at SEGA.

Would have been a damn fine reward though IMO. Knuckles in the night levels would have been perfect.

If Knuckles was in the Night Levels, Unleashed would have been a fantastic game.

I agree. Make the werehog faster, enemies that are quicker to kill and hey, I would take it over emerald hunting any day.

  14. In before "sure everything wrong about Unleashed can be fixed with a character swap /sarcasm"

I do agree though, if you made some minor adjustments to the core Werehog play and gave Knuckles back his old abilities the story mode wouldn't have felt like as much of a...I dunno, maybe chore is the word I'm looking for. Also I'd much rather glide and climb around a stage than hold B/Circle to do everything. Unfortunately, it's very unlikely for Unleashed to get any sort of rerelease due to SEGA pretty much divorcing it and leaving the Werehog to die. There were some great ideas in Unleashed (many for some and hardly any for others, of course), several of which I was pretty happy to see reused or expanded upon in Generations. I did really enjoy the hubs (especially the Entrance Stages, I think they were called; the ones with level gates), as they were full of personality and really brought Sonic's world together, without being obnoxiously huge. When Generations was announced I was honestly hoping for a similar 'formula', if you will, with at least an Entrance Stage for each Zone, but when I first saw how Generations' hub would be I understood/realized that it'd be pretty awkward to have a 3D hub with 2D and 3D characters.

None at the moment I'm afraid.
I've actually only played the 3DS version but I've watched enough videos of the console version to know what it's like. I do want to buy it but I need money first. lol. I'll probably get the PC version for the sake of modding after I complete it. Though I have considered the 360 version as an alternative.

Anyway, The 3DS version is surprisingly easy. I zoomed through it in about a day. I was kind of sad in a way. The Special Stages were also surprisingly easy. Even the last one, which is usually a bitch on the handheld titles. It's a fun game but I would have loved a longer game. Thankfully, it's not a total loss as you can still do missions after you beat the game.

On another note, I find it strange they used a remix of the Sonic Heroes Bonus stage music rather than the Emerald Challenge music. Thankfully, it still fits the level regardless.

Oh no. Get the PC version. It offers a lot more advantages over just modability. Most notably, it runs at a constant 60FPS instead of a somewhat-unstable 30, and even if your rig's not quite good enough to do that, you still won't have to deal with the console graininess.

I've actually played the hell out of the 3DS version. (By which I mean I've put about 30 hours on it, compared to the 200+ on PC.) I think it's a bit underrated, actually. It's easy and short, yeah, but I had a lot of fun replaying the levels and trying to grind my times lower. It could've been miles better if they'd had more time, given us proper 3D modern stages and NOT given classic Sonic the homing attack, but I think it's pretty good for what it is.

The 3DS version being underrated might have to do with the fact the 3DS is still out of some peoples' price ranges.

That being said, I think probably one of the most entertaining stages from visual standpoint is the Biolizard fight. They did a really good job of duplicating it for side view IMO. As for my overall favorite boss fight in terms of gameplay, I really loved Big Arms. The remix of the boss theme also helped cement it as my favorite gameplay wise.

Bear in mind that the 3DS version actually outsold the console version if the UK charts are anything to go by.

Now personally, I think the 3DS version is pretty awful. The Modern stage design is rubbish in all 7 stages in addition to Modern Sonic himself not playing well, but the really bad part is Classic Sonic's levels. The first 3 are C&P'd from the source material to the extent where they even have useless objects, while the 4 original stages later on are near offensive in their design. I seriously don't know what they were going for. On top of all that, the visuals are bland to the extreme and even the sound team got lazy when they just reused a couple of pieces of music instead of doing some remixes. What's with the missions, too? Unlocked seemingly at random and hardly fun at all to play through. Even less story than the console version too.
