Sonic Frontiers Thread - PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, PC

  1. Great to see it coming out today, at the start of the new game+ part either a roll or instant spindash is performed while boosting and a short jump is done in 2D Cyberspace while spindashing without losing speed which would make it a significant improvement over the boost.

    Yeah, even if that kinda left us with more questions than answers, seeing the Spindash in action is a big green flag right off the bat. They also said "new moveS" so I wonder if they've added some other quirks to spice up the combat and movement.

    I've definitely come down from the Frontiers hype and shied away from replaying this game, but having a New Game+ (not just a hard mode where you die instantly but everything is virtually the same) and shaking up the gameplay could completely renew the game for a lot of people.

    Also Sonic wearing a triangle-shaped hat will always look goofy to me. Idk what else they can do because he can't wear a hat around how head normally, maybe this is just the best we can do.

    Looks like they're just a new birthday skin, like the Easter egg skin we got with the first update.

    (but for real did they give the exact time it was dropping or are we gonna have to wait?)

    Update is out. First. I think you need to find the Spin Dash? It's probably the reward for the challenges.

    But more importantly, they added setting so you can maintain boost speed and change running and jump deceleration. So, uh. Momentum conserved.

    Also, more music to the Jukebox.

  10. No update for Xbox yet. Guess I should just head to bed.

    Those new options sound killer though. Really looking forward to it considering I can’t play the PC version with mods (well I haven’t tried, but I doubt it’d run well).

    What’s the deal with the cinematic angles for attacks?

    It doesn't change the camera when using moves like the Sonic Boom, Spin Slash, etc.

    The option to make Sonic not lose his speed while jumping sends him flying. About on par with rail jumping just on the ground with your boost.

    Still haven't figured out how to Spindash, though. I assume you unlock it from somewhere but where that is I do not know.

    They REMOVED THE AUTO INSTABRAKE. There is now an option that lets you set a natural deceleration when you let go of the control stick.

    That was one of my biggest problems with this game's controls and they fucking fixed it.
     
  16. Update is now downloading on Xbox! Grabbing a drink from the store and I’ll give it a go for an hour or so.

    Really looking forward to seeing how these new options change the feel of the game. Major props towards Kishi for being so receptive to our feedback. If it’s half as good as I’m expecting, it’ll be a great foundation for a future title.

    Edit: I just ran into a hedgehog crossing the street on the way to the store. That’s a good omen.

    I didn't know this was what felt "odd" about frontiers controls, I didn't know I wanted this fixed. But having gone in the menu and turned deceleration rate to zero I can't believe it.

    This is the old 3D sonic controls I loved and grew up with. It feels like a sonic game. The deceleration rate being an insta brake is good for new players, but my goodness, I think this is flat out the biggest QoL improvement ever.

    Still haven't found spin dash yet though. I can't believe this whole content, and even more sound memories, is all free. And there SEGA is charging for some songs and a playable Amy on Origins. It's a completely different ball game.

    I think with this change, Frontiers has literally leap frogged to the best sonic 3d game ever imo.

    I still think it needs good level design to take advantage of these options, and very loose recreations of old levels don't count just yet -- especially when you can't use open zone controls in the cyber space levels without a mod. But it's a great start and shows that the next game has these options in mind now.

    The boost jump and jump deceleration explicitly work for Cyber Space.
