Man, if there is one thing I've learned from video game development, it's to never, ever count on framerates being improved. Not to say they don't, but don't count on it.
The E3 build of Unleashed had the most awful framerate problems imaginable (skip to 03:05), with fans, press and SEGA all making note of it. The final game still has problems, but they're rarely a bother.
What do you mean? He said Sonic 4 ran at 60fps smoothly, it was sonic colors which ran at 30fps and has framerate drops.
My post would like to have a word with you- "They're rarely a bother.". Much of the terrible framerate was fixed, especially since there's not really any in Windmill Isle.
Oh, sorry. Let me rephrase that: OH NO! IT PAUSES FOR 1/4 SECOND FOR ONE SPOT WHEN I'm RUNNING IN A STRAIGHT LINE! THE ENTIRE GAME IS RUINED! And I don't actually notice it anymore, probably because I'm used to it and expect it, but it's not much of a problem.
No one said it was game ruining. They said it had severe framerate problems. It does. It dips into the single digits. Just because you and I can compensate for it doesn't mean it doesn't have framerate problems.
It's not a problem if it happens once in the entire game at a specific point when you're running in a straight line.
It doesn't happen once, it happens multiple times during the level. That's just the worst part. And yes, the frame rate dropping to a single digit is a problem.
No we don't. You seem to be unable to divorce the concept of playability with any sort of technical problem. The game isn't meant to dip into single digit frame rates. It is a technical problem. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact. Is it a gameplay problem? Not really. But it is a fact that the game has framerate problems.
Okay. At 0:33, the framerate drops down to nearly 12fps. Does this mean Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved has framerate problems?
No, because you can't notice it at all hardly, and it only happens when there is over 200 enemys on screen, which is a fucking lot. Unleashed just lags for the fuck of it. Adabat isn't even a hard area to render most of the plants are a single polygon flat plane with an alpha mapped texture.
But according to the strict words of Cooljerk: While it's not single-digit, it does reduce framerate severely, and it's not supposed to. Therefore it's a technical problem, etc. I don't know who to believe any more.
It rarely happens in that game, but in Unleashed(at least before the updates) It would run solidly at 23fps or so in Adabat, and lag to 5FPS any time things fell in the water. The updates fixed most of the lag issues, but they were there at the release.
Just believe that the frame dip isn't an issue as long as it doesn't drastically effect gameplay, and you'll be fine.
