    They had brown tinting in the artwork though. It's noticeable in the Amercian art, in the Japanese art it's so dark it looks like black =P

    As I've said before, I think that was really just retinal fluid, rather than iris color (since he didn't actually have irises until Sonic Adventure, with the exception of Super Sonic). Besides, I wouldn't count artwork so much as in-game appearance anyway.
