I was messing around with some games I have and tryed a Sonic 2 Level Select savestate in Sonic 3. The music played ok but it had a little distortion. I thought that it would completely stuff up, just like any savestate in the wrong game would. So I tried it in a few non-Sonic games and it did the same thing, but it had a bit more distortion this time. You can recognize the music. Does anyone know why the music works a lot better than normal? (Nothing else works fine though, just the music)

The music is being put through different instruments, hence the distortion.

    Err...

So the music is actually loaded into RAM? I thought there was a buffer of a second or something.

As far as I'm aware the background audio is stored in RAM through out gameplay. The sound effects are streamed of the cartridge as required. Or as far as I'm aware... <_<

It happens with any music, not just the level select. I tried saving a state whilst playing CPZ. Then I copied loaded it whilst I was playing Chaotix. Still works.

So it seems the designated music is loaded and stored into the MegaDrive's RAM on command. Like when starting a new zone, or even hitting an invincibility monitor.

It does too. But only with Sonic 2 Final. I tried a Sonic 1, 2 Beta and Sonic 3 Savestate and the music didn't work. On another MegaDrive game, Chaotix and Sonic CD. Sonic 2 Final was the only one with almost proper music. Also if you load a Sonic savestate in the Mega CD the color eventually changes on the screen. Just something I noticed.
