This is just something odd I noticed while playing through MS Sonic 1 on my Wii earlier. On Bridge Zone Act 2 (the one with the forced scroll), if Sonic falls off the screen he dies straight away. Nothing odd about that. But at any point after the arrow monitor, if Sonic falls into the water he loses his rings BEFORE falling further and dying!

Are there invisible spikes or enemies below the water surface? Why else would that happen? Perhaps it's a beta leftover? ;)

It's a shame the Master System doesn't have scroll layers you can turn off like the MD...

Huh... you know, that is odd. Could anyone with experience with Sonic 1 for SMS (Ambil? Hivebrain?) be able to look into this? Would be nice to get an answer.

Funny, that sounds like a possible behavior for a lava hazard.

This time, the answer is 43.

As you may know, levels are made up of blocks, each block being 32x32 pixels. Every block has its own identification, and block number $43 of Bridge Zone is just a blue block that damages the player. The blocks above the blue water mass cause nothing when collided.

$43 only causes damage in Bridge Zone. I checked in every other zone with the same block, and got different collision results. This leds to the conclusion that every zone in S1 has its own collision data. Something different to S2, that uses the same collision data for all the zones; matter of fact, I believed this was the same method used in S1 until today's tests.
