Oh... I'm back. (not that most of you know who I am anyway.) >_> This time with a demo of a SMB3 hack I've been working on. Just randomly around a week ago I decided that I'd begin work on an SMB3 hack out of boredom and so far I've got a demo of World 1 completed. :P I'm thinking I might actually finish this project... just maybe... and before I bore you people to death with my rambling here's some screenshots and the demo. IPS patch? Seriously? I'm too lazy to dig out a pristine SMB3 rom and then have to find an IPS patcher........ Okay, I lied. Playing through it, it's not bad. I see you took lessons in the "kick-your-ass" school of game design, as those levels were waaaaaaaay too hard for level one material, but then again I haven't played SMB3 in like forever and ever so I'm probably a tad rusty. At one point in time, I abused savestates and spent like ten minutes in a mushroom house opening chests until I finally managed to find a leaf or whatever that thing is. I know, I know. Super forms and flying are the two worst design choices in any platforming game because they break it hardcore, but shut up! It's not like you leave a flat space long enough to get airborne anyways.
No, the first levels of SMB3 are way more forgiving. In fact the very first thing I did was to press right sightly and accidentally falling into the pit at the beginning without even managing to touch anything at all x_x
lol well I could have made it in the hold your hand style like NSMB. :P So it's a little hard (with a keyboard anyway) with a controller I sail through it for the most part though. (that could just be me though...) I'm thinking in the future I'll try editing the graphics and maybe getting some ASM techy to help me with a save feature of sorts. Of course I could always do I like I do with most of my projects and scrap it. >_< I've heard from one of my testers that I should actually make it harder. XD Anyways, any ideas on how I could make this hack better would be appreciated.
Just make 1-1 kick your ass less. There shouldn't be so much hole all over the bottom of the first level. Also, the surprise in 1-2, while clever, actually helps more than it hurts. If you had less time in the level or it pushed you further back (like from the end all the way to the beginning), it would be detrimental. As it stands, it just serves as a free crapload of rings. Helped recover one of the lives lost trying to navigate that four-pipe two-piranha plant section at the beginning of 1-1.
Don't put giant canyons in such a way where I can't see them but they can shoot me, they're horribly hard to dodge >_>
