Just posting to bring up the 'two Sonic Teams' theory, in which case the latest big-budget game will be from the guys fresh from making Generations, rather than the Lost World/Colours team. Might be an indication of exactly how they're "inspired", since the two took different approaches to a few things.

If we're lucky, there won't be any cringey dialogue anymore.

Game studios working on multiple projects isn't exactly breaking news, but they're usually not set teams. This also seems to be the case for Sonic Team. Like iirc Sonic Lost World was in development during Generations, and when Generations was finished people who worked on that began working on Lost World.

As for the different approaches: Colours and Lost World were done by the same director so there you go.

They'd first have to get writers who don't seemingly hate their job.

I'm just speaking on the general terms of a good 3D platformer that happens to be part of the Sonic series (and before anyone draws the wrong conclusion, no, I'm not speaking about taking any random platformer and throwing Sonic and co. into it a la Boom: Rise of Lyric did). I wasn't even specifically referring towards adapting classic Sonic in 3D in particular, but if I was, I think it would be a kind of be a moot point anyway, given how the studio largely abandoned its concepts following the Adventure titles.

And on that note, I'm going to state that on the terms of a 3D Genesis Sonic, I'm not specifically seeking for a pixel-perfect 3D translation of the Genesis games; an 3D game that retained the concepts/components that comprise said gameplay would be absolutely fine with me. Parkour mechanics in particular I feel hold a lot of overlap with the Genesis games and I feel could go a long way of functioning as a 3D translation of Genesis Sonic games--that is, at least if they were done properly.

Personally I think Sonic and what he stands for doesn't work in 3D. Platformers work best in 2D and with Sonic being about speed (I'm referring to his character) he gets regulated to being on rails in a 3D game. It's almost like Sonic is stuck between a racing game and a platformer and only does a semi decent job of it some of the time.

If Sonic was to move away from platforming and racing where would the main series go? In my mind it wouldn't be a main Sonic game if those genres were dropped.

And I'm open to be proven wrong on it can't be done, but until I am, there's nothing wrong with, based on the info we've had over the last 20 years, conclude "there is no possible way to imagine this game without it being irrecognizable as a Sonic" and thus "Classic Sonic is likely impossible in 3d".

This'll be interesting, as with others said before yeah I'm waiting till I see any kind of proof. Part of me is wanting to believe SEGA really is doing their damnedest to make sure these games aren't a miss but...of course I'm going to be skeptical. Closet they've gotten with the whole, "3D Sonic that hails back to 2D" was Lost World, to me at least. I'm refusing to believe Sonic is impossible to be done in 3D, it can be done.

Ask yourself this. Are platformers better in 2D or 3D? For Sonic to surpass it's 2D legacy you have to look at other 3D platformers that in some way surpass 2D platforming. You could say Mario 3D World is a good example of 3D platforming done right but if you just stuck Sonic in there it will still feel like a Mario game.

Haven't they always been saying this since Sonic '06, though? :v:

  13. SEGA is trying too hard. Just pick a direction and fucking go with it. Every game went in a different direction to the point where Sonic isn't even relevant in gaming. 06 was inspired by "Classic" Sonic, and really, Sonic Adventure 1, and 2. The levels were dynamic, bigger than we've had up to that point, and had branching paths. Numerous characters going through the same space would do it differently. Mix up the object layout, flip it backwards, and it feels like a new level. 06's fragmented story line aside, 06 looked good on paper. All the cut content looked like it would have been great. It's just the execution. Unleashed turned Sonic into boostboost, but a lot of levels had parts that were designed well, which made it somewhat redeeming. Generations had great 2D sections, but "Modern" Sonic had more 2D than I would have liked. Lost World was just...weird. Sonic Galaxy of sorts. But something that bothered me about Generations and Lost World, and Unleashed to an extent, was that the levels felt small and linear. Sonic Boom, I don't think I need to comment on that. It's just a trainwreck, nothing more needs to be set. Sonic Team is confused, and don't appear to know what they're doing. Statements or no statements, I think the reason that people hold Sonic 1-3K and Sonic Adventure 1/2 close, is that they had consistency, even if the execution wasn't perfect.

OK, I think it's time to wrap up the non-info topic. We'll come back to $unnamedSonicGame when something concrete's out.
