That's what I do. Depending on the wording of the sentence, I stick one or the other in to better its flow. Yes, I really do that.

That could be seen in some of my P:SR posts if they were viewable by the public. Also...

I wonder how many people in Japan prefer "Robotnik"...?

I've always used Robotnik. Always will be. The closest I've ever come to the name Eggman would be "Ol' Eggarse".

I generally use robotnik when referring to the cartoons and older video games and eggman for the 3d sonic games. Not sure of any reason why, nor do I really care, which was my vote =P

I used to exclusively use Robotnik, having grown up with that name plastered all over Americanized Sonic goods back in the day. But after learning a number of years ago that his Japanese name has always been Eggman, I've sort of got used to calling him by that, especially when talking about the newer games. Frankly, I just use whatever name feels appropriate for each case.

I've always called him Robotnik; it just seems to fit better IMO. I have caught myself using eggman a couple times, though.

  6. I think it's funny how many times people misspell 'Robotnik'. Sega misspelled it numerous times, such as Robotonic, Robotnic, and more. I bet they changed it to Eggman because they kept misspelling it! But personally, Robotnik sounds a lot better than Eggman. Problem with Eggman is that when I see it, I think
    "WE ARE THE WALRUSES...."

Lately, I've noticed that I use "Robotnik" in verbal speech and Eggman when typing. Mostly because I can't seem to remember how the hell one spells Robotnik (I ALWAYS want to put a 'c' in there somewheres). So to avoid misspelling the name, I just type Eggman. But in speech, I stick with Robotnik because that name sounds way more menacing and besides the only person I usually talk to who would actually know who Robotnik is prefers Robotnik over Eggman.

    Eggman.

  8. Sonic and friends seem to call him eggman in the shows more often than the games.

The matter has never particularly bothered me but if I had to choose, I'd go with Robotnik. It fits the "evil genius" and "big bad guy" category a lot better then Eggman in my opinion. I already know he was always called Eggman, but the name Robotnik has always been a staple of his character to me.

Maybe if Eggman was pronounced "Ehg-min" instead of "Ayg-man"...

Seeing how it isn't, my vote's on "Robotnik".

Agreed. Robotnik just sounds better IMO. That, and the fact that I've been calling him Robotnik since the very beginning so it's what I'm used to. I literally don't ever recall using the name Eggman, ever (except when referring to "Eggman Land" in Unleashed, which doesn't count anyway seeing as it's a level name).

Actually it's Dr. Robotnik to me, because... Yeah, it's Dr. Robotnik. Also there's another reason, because I don't like the Sonic games from today. So I prefer retro ones. That's it. :)

  13. Why does it even matter? Sega couldn't care less which one you prefer to use, and it's rather ridiculous to be so critical about this.

The name change shouldn't even be an issue in the first damn place.

When it comes to the video games, I will frequently (and interchangably) refer to him as "Dr. Robotnik" or "Eggman," and occasionally as "Robotnik" without the "Dr." title, but I will never call him "Dr. Eggman," if that makes any sense.

I love both names, but since I feel Eggman is a character first and a villain second, how intimidating a name does(or doesn't) sound won't affect my choice.

I use Eggman more because that's what Eggman himself does. No one questions that Oswald Cobblepot uses "Penguin" as a villainous name, so I can accept that Ivo Robotnik uses "Eggman" in the same vein. As such, even though I like the Robotnik name, Eggman captures more of his identity, and alludes to his wacky off-the-wall nature a bit better. Hence, Eggman gets my vote.

My vote was Robotnik. Honestly, It depends on where you were first exposed to him. Japan = Eggy, US = Robotnik.

    Why does anything matter?

I mean, if this doesn't matter, does paying for child support matter? Does getting tested for SARS matter? Does lockign your window at night so Johnny Rape-a-lot doesn't sneak in matter? We can brush these things off like they don't matter, but once we do, we lose faith in ourselves. We lost faith in EVERYTHING.

So, in short, it does matter, and I'd have to say that it's Robotnik all the way, no doubt about it.

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
Yeah, you're right. It wouldn't have been BEEN an issue in the first place if they had never brought the "Dr. Eggman" name in the U.S. and Europe to begin with.

As a matter of fact, if they'd have called him Eggman from the get-go in the translation, we probably wouldn't be having this problem. It'd sound weird, but it would be come his name as much as Robotnik has for the rest of us.

  20. If you're going to be funny about something, at least put some effort into it.

In reality, no it doesn't. You're fussing over something so pointless to even matter. "Eggman" or "Robotnik" they're the same character, if you want to call him Robotnik that's fine, but there's no crisis involving Eggman's name.

Sonic Team and Sega couldn't care any less which name you prefer.
