New Sonic 1 prototype pics

What purpose do the hills in GHZ serve? Or the clouds? Or Spring Yard's cityscape?

They were there to look pretty, and nothing more, I'd wager.

 

Is it just the quality of the pictures, or does Sonic's color look a bit different? At least to me it does.

 

Not so much to me. I wouldn't be overly surprised that a beta Sonic 1 would have a different color, but it does look rather washed-out, so I don't think it's very different from the original.

Now, if Sonic looked the teal/cyan hedgehog in the very early art (http://www.theghz.com/sonic/son1/sonic.jpg) THAT would be something.

 

I can't quite remember who said this, it might have been Naka, originally planned was a sound test with the Sonic band that included Vector (similar to Sonic singing at the end of S1GG), it was dropped due to time constrants and the unused ROM space was replaced with, the now legendary Sega sound.

That explains why the taller mountains in GHZ look like shit (Pixels missing from bottom, ala floating = no.)

 

Just putting up the combined pic, sorry if it is a teensy bit off, sorta hard to line things up perfectly with having something so small, but, anyway, hope this shows my point that the two screen/map things are parts of a whole:

 

If I remember correctly, there was something about a breakdancing Sonic.

 

I know that even if Drx found this prototype that won't be in there, but one can dream
