I definitely like the Wing Fortress music alright [but of course I agree with Tweaker still here] - although of all the versions I've heard, I have yet to hear one that can get the "de dum de dum de dummm" sounding a bit more powerful

So many versions to choose from - whoever decides which songs'll be in the final could have a hard time choosing :P

*hand's up* I qualify for 1 of those few who has 5.1 surround sound :D

  2. Once again, more awesome music, I think the special stage track is nearly perfect , just enough variation on the original theme to not get stale, but not enough to sound like a full-blown remix ^^.

Yes, it does, a little. I don't know how well it would fit in, but I could try playing the trumpet parts in WFZ.. I think I could replicate the sound you're trying to get nicely.

    OH, US
Never epic enough for ya, eh? ;) I think you're right about more supporting chords though. I'll try that (hopefully) tonight.

Well, I'm not as concerned about the lead brass as I am the backing brass section, but if you've got some skills, by all means, give it a shot ;). The only problem is that I change the tempo quite a bit... if you could get relatively close to the tempos and record at a high sample rate I could fix it up in post I suppose.

  4. I've got the skills (not to brag or anything :P) but.. now that I think about it, I don't have anything to record it with sufficient quality ^^. When I get home this friday however (out-of-state college =/) I can ask around and see if I can borrow someone's equipment :D

Hmmm, WFZ would be awesome with a small brass group.

Ok well I haven't had much time to do this with school and all but here's a pretty rough attempt at a live guitar version of Metropolis Zone. I know the guitar work is crummy and needs to be timed better. The transitions from recording to recording are pretty rough too. I would also like to point out that yes, the percussion effects are a direct MIDI rip.

This is really a proof of concept at this point. I'd like to get some creative direction on this. Tell me what you think.

I know it's pretty clear that Metropolis Zone sounds like it has electric guitar in it, but I think you're doing too much of the song in guitar. It's hard for me to describe it (I'm not very familiar with many music terms), but it's more like a solo guitar playing off the looping sequence of chords (probably brass). IMO, that's the coolness of the song, and it shouldn't be done away with. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense, can anybody help?

Anyway, your previous attempt was more accurate starting at 0:13 (when you stop doing the chords part that some other instrument is supposed to be doing). The guitar effect is good, too, so I'm sure that with a good arrangement on the other parts, your guitar will fit quite well.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the special stage one... It's got the melody ok but I'm not sure about the choice of synth... For me, that track would get annoying very quickly. I think the slight porta or attack on the main melody is a bit annoying, and I'm not sure about the bass either

Wing Fortress, on the other hand, I like. It's got the military march/fanfare to it perfectly and as far as creative licensing goes slowing down at that point's pretty clever (Altho I think you should have a timpani fill at the gap after the tempo change... See how it sounds, if not, then ignore me :P ). Don't mind the brass too much, but agree it needs more support (Specially on the rising part just before the tempo change, the backing brass is a little empty) - It is the second last level, and it's a giant airship ;) Excellent so far though.

I'd agree that Special Stage song is somewhat off, but it does sound very close to it so far. There's a Japanese Sonic 2 commercial that has a higher-quality version of Special Stage, although it's kind of hard to hear over the announcer.

(and who can resist cheesy claymation Sonic at the end?)

Now that wing fortress is amazing. I'm not 100% on the tempo change though. The only thing really bothering me about that, is the Intro sounds very full, which is great, but then when it get's into the next section of the song, it feels pretty empty.

ScubaSteve, I would love to hear your Chemical plant improved just a little, because I think that one was almost perfect.

This part in particular I think needs much more oomph and power

scubaSteve, That Wing Fortress is amazing.

  12. The guitar playing is good. Of course, the drums could be better and the timing could be better, but I understand that this is just a rough example, right?

There's one thing I'd like to point out. My language isn't the best, so instead, I'll describe it with an mp3.

Overall, great work. Excellent for a rough example. I have good expectations for your complete version.

Same here... I think it breaks the flow a little. And the changes in the second loop just seemed odd to me.

I'd ask you guys to please make faithful renditions before the custom remixes... They're cool and that, but when keeping them like the originals you won't have so much risk of anybody disliking certain parts of them. I'd personally think some of these tracks are just perfect, if it wasn't for the little changes that were introduced, which just break the "nostalgic" part for me.

  14. I agree with Iceknight on this one. ScubaSteve, your wing fortress rendition is very good, but I'm not keen on the tempo changes at all.

Yeah, it sounds like the guitar is replacing some instruments it shouldn't.

Anyway, I think Blur's guitar effects were closer to the original's... I hope he can perfect those guitar parts.

I've skimmed through some pages. Now. I'm not sure if you want music that we specifically create for this project. Because there are quite a few tracks already on the internet that I love the renditions of and are actually on my PSP's playlist. I go to Dwelling of Duels every month to give it a listen to the tracks that people are putting up.

I supposed you would need to ask for permission if they were to be used.
But if you don't want to go that route, you could always just use them for inspiration.

Haempling - Sonic 2 - Oil Ocean Zone

tie tibone - Sonic 2 - Emerald Hill Zone

    Haempling - Sonic2 - Mystic Cave Zone

There are a few others on there. If not I have the mp3 saved on my computer if you want to give it a listen.
Again, this aren't my tracks. But they are worth a listen.

Those abuse the guitar too much, in my oppinion.

I agree with ICE, though that MC intro sounded perfect and and the OO intro sounded sounded interesting is strings.

I'd like to hear Oil Ocean Zone with Sitar, Shehnai and Tabla drums.

  20. I have to say that the Casino Night 2P that Cinnosu posted is great. However, when I listen to it in surround mode the "rear" sound doesn't pop out as much as the original. This goes for all the other tracks as well. It's not really a big deal but it would be better if it worked that way, just like it did with the original. Just listen to the original Hidden palace and the remastered version through rear speakers (or put the WOW effect thing if your using wmp) and you'll know what I mean.
