Direct your attention to the bottom portion of this page, entitled "Sonic 3 Sample Analysis".

A while back I spent an afternoon going through the samples buried in the Sonic 3 ROM, assisted by my good friend Qjimbo, and came out with a couple goodies that might pique some interest:

A good number of these samples were taken DIRECTLY from Michael Jackson songs.

    A couple things to note:

    - Sample A0/"Jam" was not identified by me. This one was discovered a while back.
    - Sample C0 is compared to "Space Dance"; a song from Space Channel 5 Part 2 (which, of course, had Michael Jackson's involvement). I am not insinuating that Sample C0 is taken from this specific song, as that would be impossible. The sound that Sample C0 represents is a beatboxing/breathing sound Michael makes quite universally, in much of his work. Space Dance is merely one of the most prominent examples of this sound.

    Edit: AMAZING DEVELOPMENT:

Sonic's shoes = Michael Jackson's shoes! Details on Page 5!

That was all it was? How boring!

The point is, to my knowledge, to prove that he actually worked on music used in the game. I doubt it requires him to make these noises.

You're completely missing the point. He didn't "make noises". These are audio samples from his music. I'd say that's a relatively big deal.

The lack of response to this thread is absolutely ridiculous. This is a huge breakthrough! What is wrong with you guys?

I've got to say, though, that this raises more questions than it answers. If MJ was involved—and he obviously was—then to what extent did his work remain in-game? It's obvious the drum samples are his doing, for sure, but what songs are "his"? All of them? The tracks removed in S3&K PC?

It's like we've gone full circle with this whole thing. Our original theories were that the songs were changed in the PC version due to legal reasons, and we spent the last couple of years beating around the bush in that regard. Now we're right back to it. Is there even a concrete answer to this whole debacle? The mind boggles.

I remember in another topic we made the comparison of "Happy Birthday Lisa" to this situation, in the sense that it set a precedent for MJ contributing anonymously to various forms of media. I think that's a rather plausible explanation for all of this, but it'd be nice to hear some other opinions in that regard.

  5. I'm glad this topic came up again cuse holy crap x.x it's taken me for a spin.

First I spotted the whole topic of MJ working on Sonic 3 music, and then I saw that video documentary on youtube by Qjimbo which was really good. And after that I started looking more and more at MJ's stuff and now I've become a total MJ fan!

Anyway, the Jam clip I remember reading about and is some seriously solid evidence that MJ was involved, but I'm not so sure about those other two clips. They sound pretty generic really.

For one, the glass shattering sound seems different compared to the one heard in the MJ clip. Although it does sound like there's a bit of background music mixed in with it which does sound like it came from In the Closet

The second clip, sound of beat-boxing does sound a little more solid, but it still seems rather generic. I could probably make a similar sound myself.

However, if you're suggesting these clips are part of the musical composition, I would say that it's a reasonable link between MJ and Sonic 3. Even if the sounds in Sonic 3 aren't taken directly from MJ songs, it would make sense that MJ would use similar sounds for his other songs. For example, the glass breaking sound is also used in the beginning of Jam. Well, not the EXACT same sound, but the fact that he uses it in more than one song makes it part of his style.

All together, nice research. I can't imagine how hard you needed to listen to all these samples to find this. But hey ;] least you got to listen to plenty of MJ music while doing it.

EDIT: Also, been a bit since I last posted. Hey again guys! =)

I think it only sounds different because the sample from the rom is of lower quality, and probably played at a different speed. Normally I would agree, as glass breaking sound effects are extremely common, but as you noted (very observant, I might add), you can hear music from the song cutting out into the glass breaking effect. Which is exactly my point with this sample.

And again, as you noted, the Sonic 3 soundtrack is stylistically very similar to Michael's sound at the time (see the "Dangerous" album). Such as the Mid-boss track.

  7. I frankly think the whole 'leap forward' in sonic 3 and knuckles is because of Michael Jackson. I still see him as a human being, and a talented one at that. Also, since we're on the Topic of MJ, I think he was involved in sonic heroes' developement as well, in hang castle, when you're upside down you can hear MJ doing his 'Ohhh' and 'Ch' sounds...I'll make a topic when I'm arsed to do so.

About a week ago, I realized that I had heard an MJ song that contained parts of him singing something that was similar to the main melody of Angel Island act 1 (the part where the Sonic 3 credits medley that never made it in the final starts).

I sometimes think MJ is a robot because of watching things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arNAyvPJ6Yw

Either way, I think I just fell in love with him, in a non gay way.

That'd be the End Credits :P

Edit: Ah, nevermind, I read that wrong. I'll have to take another look when I get back from work. Regardless, it's great to see all the MJ love going on in this thread :)

  10. Hey, for that matter has anyone noticed that the whistling sound heard in Stranger in Moscow is similar to one heard in Sonic Adventure in the some of the ruins areas?

    EDIT: Scratch that. I remember the whistle a little different then it actually was ^.^;

EDIT 2: For more clarification on the glass breaking sound, I took a sample from the actual song "In the Closet" and sound sample A1 and out them side by side in Audacity. This is what they look like when set to the same rate (obviously, I lowered the song sample to match A1):

Obviously, the clip from the game is compressed, and mixed with higher bass and made to sound the way they wanted in the game. However, the sound is extremely similar and the waveform is very similar as well. I'd say it's pretty solid that the clips are definitely one in the same.

  12. I think the fact alone that they replaced the end credits normal "level remix" with something original helps the argument that it's MJ's music really. Just based on the fact that it's a sudden change. If they had continued with MJ doing the music (assuming he ever stopped) and advertised it, the credits song would have made more sense.

    Ow, my brain.

This one's been spinning in circles for a while. I'm just gonna believe that MJ had some part in it, but not an enduring one, and leave it at that, lest I look stupid when somebody tries to disprove this, and then it's reproved, and... @_@

Forgive me if this sounds ridiculous, I'm just throwing it out here.. Why not try to find a way to contact Michael Jackson, and just ask him upfront about what his involvements were in Sonic 3's music, somewhat like how Craig Stitt or Brenda Ross were about their work in Sonic 2? Of course, it may be somewhat of a challange to do so, but as anyone ever tried?

Let me be the first to say, it would be about as unlikely as unlikely can get. You have no idea how many people try to contact MJ on a daily basis. Short of bumping into him in person, I don't think we're going to be hearing his side of the story.

Maybe if he did something like another album signing event, like he did at the launch of Invincible, or a meet and greet/public event, we could have a chance to fire off a question or two.

  18. Well he will be releasing a new album this year. There could be some PR events around that would give us a chance. If he takes a tour for this album, it'd be killer to get back-stage tickets or something and see him =)

    Wow, me too!

Right, HOW MANY OF US DOES THIS ALSO APPLY TO =P

I always thought it odd that the songs that didn't use the generic "S3 drums" were cut from the PC version, and until seeing Qjimbo's YouTube vid, I somehow thought the drums in themselves were the reason for this; I don't know whether I'm retreading old ground, but doesn't the S3 midboss theme actually contain a "Ooooooh!" (Which precedes "Come on!") sample that sounds like MJ? It is low quality (As you'd expect from a DAC vocal sample) however.

  20. It's been mentioned before, but I do wounder why it's not brought up more often.

EDIT: On a side note, I redid the album cover to Thriller for an Adobe Illustrator project.
