Damn shame they always picks the same songs though (Sega really has a hard on for Splash Hill and Seaside hill and I'll never understand why)
...Jun REALLY likes that synth, doesn't he. It's the only thing really holding back that Diamond Dust remix. Blizzard Peaks though is an all around improvement because the bass lines aren't utterly drowning out everything else (a very common problem in ever Nintendo-handheld Sonic title from the GBA to the DS.) Also, it shouldn't surprise people that when Senoue picks a 3D Blast song to remix, it's from the Genesis version from either himself or Maeda. The only times the Saturn version got remixed were the times Richard Jacques was directly involved--Generations Mission 5, some of those remixes in Sonic Chronicles.
>Splash Hill has three remixes. All right, Jun, we get it, you really want to keep shoving that one down our throats. Mad Gear it up already.
Good lord, most of the backing instruments sound like they just slowed the original bits down in Audacity or something. I expect better from Wave Master.
White Park 2 Route 99 1 Speed Highway (Classic!) Remix Leaf Forest 1 Neo Green Hill 1 Sonic Unleashed Theme
Getting some Palmtree Panic US vibes from this one. These songs would be fun to listen to in Generations. I may download them just for that purpose. However I must ask. For a winter themed game, what's with all the grass land remixes? Where's Ice Cap or Twinkle Park or hell Frozen Factory (Like why pick Windy Hill at all?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4CKpWDEPIU&feature=c4-overview&list=UUiIfxjMI8qfvMP75kACp6LA Some Flying Battery because why not?
All the Sonic Mixes are god awful. Jesus Christ that synth buttrock shit. I didn't even like much of what Jun did in Generations...but this just assaults my ears.
I wouldn't go that far... but they aren't great. I've never cared too much for Jun personally, the only contributions he's made to the series that I've really enjoyed are GHZ Modern, SS Modern, Pyramid Cave, and of course the Sonic 3 end of act jingle (which I stand by the opinion that that song should be used for every Sonic game end of act jingle)
Best remix of the set is easily Blizzard Peaks, since it just updates the song to a more natural sound (Would like a whole Rush Adventure album like this, honestly.) The rest are either really lazy (Sweet Mountain, Windy Hill, Speed Highway) or just Jun's classical buttrock. Damn shame since I thought that phase was dead and buried after Shadow. Naturally, this also means Ohtani is just as guilty of phoning it in. But I'm being a bit hard. Diamond Dust really could use a better synth lead rather than... that... and it'd be better off. Splash Hill did not need three remixes (two of Act 1, one the usual medley.) Let it go, Jun. It's not that good a song. Never was. Mad Gear sits in the corner weeping from the lack of love.
I'm really digging Neo Green Hill Act 1's mix. It's like if Palmtree Panic US and Windmill Isle Day Hub had a kid. If Diamond Dust Act 1 didn't have the Jun-forgot-what-a-Genesis-sounds-like lead instrument I'd probably like it even more, but it's still pretty nice. Also, if you want MP3s, use clipconverter.cc or similar YouTube ripper.
I hate to say it but if the Olympic games and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are any indication, we're never going to be rid of Splash Hill. I think it's pretty awful myself yet they insist on spamming it anywhere. Pretty great that they actually started acknowledging the Advance trilogy though, even if the remixes haven't been the best!
Would you prefer the endless reuse of Green Hill that was commonplace before Splash Hill and Seaside Hill took over?
Yes. Its the equivalent of Mario's World 1-1 and there's nostalgia attached to it. Seaside Hill and Splash Hill (horrid name btw) are like the first level of New Super Mario Bros. The same environment with worse music and none of the nostalgia attached.
If SSB4 is any indication, Windy Hill may be set to replace Seaside Hill for go-to modernized Sonic nostalgia.
