I've been searching for information regarding the official Sonic Level Creator that was on the PlaySega website from around 2009 to 2011 when the website was shut down. It was a flash based game that could play levels made by VIP users on the PlaySega website, and there isn't a lot of information on it that I've been able to find compared to other similar things. It seems like SWF files and other parts of the website were accessible when the website was still running, and some small bits are archived, but the flash file that'd play the levels and the creator itself seem to not be properly archived anywhere. I'd love to see if anyone has any interesting information about it, possibly played the game when it was still up, or even has anything archived that isn't in other places.
I'd also like to say that if this thread should go in a different category then please let me know, I'm slightly newer to forum stuff and wasn't sure where this would fit best.

i honestly thought i had hallucinated this existing, but i remember exactly what you were talking about. i might have an ancient vista pc with the thing still in its cache, and i'll follow up if i manage to unearth anything

I played it while still up, the level art was really cool, but the actual physics and overall game control felt awful. You could sign up for a premium subscription to make and publish levels, which also gave you the PlaySEGA saturn style controller too, which iirc wasn't as great as a Saturn controller build quality wise.

I never paid for premium, so I was only able to play levels iirc. It was neat though.

Gameplay footage with music. Can confirm this was it as I played it back in the day as well.

I haven't looked into it myself, but there was an effort to archive all available flash files called the Flashpoint Archive. I'd check if they have it.

flashpoint is great, but unfortunately they don't have it. it was one of the first places i checked after internet archive came up dry, but i had already gone through and catalogued all the official sonic stuff that was archived through flashpoint.

  7. Techokami ripped all of the graphics from it and uploaded them onto The Spriter's Resource. I think he could help.

i saw this while looking for stuff too, but comments from techokami on the upload seem to imply that they only ripped the sprites and don't have any other files. im not totally opposed to reaching out to him, though, as he might have more experience in finding stuff like this.

Sonic the Hedgehog Level Creator - that one

I have no idea if anyone's mirrored the SWF - I would expect so in this case since it was quite a late (and popular) Flash game, but it doesn't look like the wiki page has been updated in a while.

Retro had a topic for this back in the day:
    https://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?threads/sonic-the-hedgehog-level-creator.22770/

I did dabble in it briefly at the time - I think the consensus was that it plays pretty badly, but it was notable for having semi-original graphics rather than recycled Green Hill Zone or whatever. Still not really sure what the story is behind those - feels like a fan project got lucky, but other than "it existed" it's a bit of a mystery.

The joke was this was more interesting and on-point than Sonic 4.

i haven't been able to find the swf mirrored anywhere unfortunately, but i'm mostly hoping that theres possibly someone out there who downloaded it when it was still up and has it somewhere. if its not already archived somewhere else, that feels like it might be the best bet.

i am planning on going through this whole thread at some point since i came across it earlier in looking for info, but didn't go through the entirety of it. one thing i did see from here (or maybe another thread?) was that the game had a PDF user guide. that's another thing i'd really interested in finding as that doesn't seem to be archived anywhere else either, and every screenshot that seemed to be posted of it is broken now.

No one here managed to back this up when it was still online? That's actually shocking seeing how we're usually good about these things. I remember the thread linked above, I don't think I actually ever played any of the levels. I think it was one of those things I kept telling myself that I would "go check it out later" and later never came. :V This may be a stupid question but has anyone checked Archive.org yet? Sometimes things end up there under our noses and years later someone finds it. Also check the lost media wiki forums and discord server if you haven't yet, someone there might have the files saved on a computer.

I remember this thing being brought up during the most recent thread around R2/Dubious Depths, because someone (jokingly) suggested the unique level theme in this was R2 assets

internet archive was one of the first places i checked, and there are some snapshots of the actual website saved but they're all very broken due to how many of files were likely called from the server directly (and that sever is long since offline.) if you search some variation of "sonic level creator," there's a lot of fanmade stuff that doesn't really apply. searching "playsega" returns one single result from 2009 that seems to be a gaming news podcast of some sort that mentions playsega at one point. i haven't checked any discord servers yet though, and that's probably where i'll look next if i can figure out where to look

I briefly got in to contact with Mediatonic to try and recover this several years ago. Things seemed promising and suddenly communications became that they wouldn't be able to help. It's likely lost forever.

I have the music from this.
I could upload it if it doesn't break the rules

i don't think that'd be against any rules, but im also pretty new here so i can't say for sure. that would be cool to see though, i don't think i've seen any of the actual audio files themselves outside of gameplay recordings or anything

Ok this should be it: https://files.catbox.moe/auez5o.zip
Catbox changed the file name of the zip upon upload. It was formally called "Level Creator" after the folder inside.

I don't remember where I got these from, but I saved them anyway.

these are cool to hear! i'd heard the one labeled "S1_81" but i don't think i've heard any of the other ones. it's a very interesting, strange vibe they decided to go with in these tracks, im not really sure how to describe it.

went back and posted about this in the lost media wiki forums as well as the discord server, and i guess now it's just a waiting game of hoping someone who might know something sees it.

I remember playing this on my Mums laptop waaaay back in 2010 and being super obsessed with playing other peoples levels, I remember reading somewhere that it was likely based on the J2ME port of Sonic 1, and that you could somehow play Green Hill Zone Act 1 by reverse engineering it, but I don't know if I'm entirely remembering correct. Hope you can end up finding it, as I would love to see it be reverse engineered and see if what I say is really true.
