    Even if the sea layer is too tall and the clouds look a bit strangely shaded, that looks very cool.

    Looking very good. Although in my personal opinion the waves in the water look a bit too choppy. But that's just me being picky. This is going to look great when finished.

    I've put Asteron on hold for a bit, I'm going to attempt to make some of the remaining EHZ badniks, or at least vector outlines to start. :thumbsup:

    Thanks dude. My personal goal was to avoid making something too realistic or too cartoon-like.


    I'm not a big fan of the water myself, I actually prefer something simpler. Figured I'd do it that way to see if anyone else agreed. :lol:

    Again, thanks guys and hopefully more background concepts come in to compare and contrast.

    Here's a preview of Coconuts. Just a quick start, about an hour and a half. I'm aware of the color differences and how it's not identical to the sprite, so I'm working on that next. But now at least I have a basic outline and something to work with. At this early stage I'm not going to upload the vector file just yet. (Unless you really want it just let me know.) :thumbsup:

    I don't like the art direction you guys are going with the backgrounds. It's like you became Tim Buckley and used Google Image search for backgrounds and added slight filters to it.

    Hahahahahah, agreed in full force.

    Here's a radical idea: Photograph your own flowers, and clouds, and grass. Use this as reference and then digitally draw or paint the graphics based on this. Maybe (In the case of the cloud for example), you can actually merge the original source in there.

    I'm (Very slowly, I have RL shit b the bucketload) actually working on a mockup of what I think Aquatic Ruin Zone should look like in HD. You know, I spend an entire week with my camera, going around photographing bricks, moss, reeds, roman columns... that sort of thing. I wouldn't even consider google image search for anything other than basic reference.

    I admire that kind of effort, but I kinda feel like nothing will get done speedy enough if everyone here went traveling to take the perfect photographs. :lol: Additionally, I think it would really suck to spend all that time on something that may not be used.

    I didn't travel, I got creative. In fact, the only thing I couldn't really find were my own sources for the mountainous background of ARZ.

    It's just a shame that I've got all this real-life drama happening, because I'd have an interesting result to show. I did an early draft using my brick photos that was... well, interesting.

    The moss I got was perfect, though -- and it was practically from right outside my door at university.

    Don't want to be negative but there's too much detail and gradients in the background. Looks a bit confusing.
    I hope the project continues with the cartoon look instead of renders or photographs.

    EDIT: Agreed with Chimpo. Looks a bit like that wallpapers you find in Google.

    Agreed with ICEknight: Surely part of the impetus for this project was to show Sega how it should be done when it comes to remaking a Sonic game?

    So, instead of rushing the fuck out of it, like that 360/PS3 'effort', it should be done properly.
     
  15. I like it a lot (m_virtua's background), but I don't know if it's going to be quite what we want in the end. We can always resort to redrawing the tiles if we want to be more genuine.

    LSH, I'm looking forward to seeing ARZ (someday).

    And regarding the status of this project and not letting it die, I think we're doing just fine so far. In principle the first level we do will be the hardest.

    I've started working on a spring

    I've a few thoughts about it;
    The dark bit at the top of the spring could do with smaller or more steps in colour
    I'm very unhappy with the white shine
    I think the edges, especially the top, could do with being a little thicker like the original
    The spring could look more metallic and less block like

    I think this is one of the occasions where gradients could be usefull?
    I know its only a small thing but thoughts would be appreciated!

    27 Tiles now in my SVG. I created a little preview image of how far I've got with the cleaned up tiles.

    There are a lot of tiles to go, but they aren't taking me that long to make, I'm just spending more time sleeping and keeping my place tidy for once.
