256 just for the sky and clouds? That's way too many—ideally, you'll want to fit the whole background in 256 colors. That's a huge reason why CGI backgrounds will not work.

There are 10 palette lines right? At least two could/should be used for the background.
Even if we used two palette lines for each one of the original palette lines, that's only eight so we would still have two left.

 

Am I the only one that thinks that the complex form/structure of the clouds is "too much" against the simple blue sky?

Plus, where the horizon line is - the intersection looks ... weird

Unless the focus is only the clouds themselves - then ignore my statements

It was a quick job with the first similar cloud I found. There must be lots of other clouds with more similar colors, out there in Google images... =|

Taking recent comments into account, I thought I'd adjust what I'd already drawn to see what you guys think.




When I drew the first version, I added extra 50% shades where dithering was used in the original. On blurring this I think it's kept it pretty true to the original colours.

@ ICEknight: Can you point me in the direction of a method to extract graphics from the rom?

Hey, it's looking pretty close.

EDIT: About extracting the graphics, I normally used NEMSRCH.EXE and then a tile viewer to arrange and color them (I think most people here use Tile Layer Pro), but there might be a site with all these already extracted correctly.

EDIT 2: Now that I think about it, somebody posted the whole tileset for Emerald Hill over here... I'll see if I can find it quick.

That looks excellent! I especially like the effects on the water.

 

I just took the original graphics and blurred them. The reflection was made by copying the new blurred graphics, flipping them, resizing them, and then applying a wave filter. Added a little motion-blurred distortion and I was more or less done.

 

Very nice... Agree that the water effect looks great! Fits in well with the original art style too.

I do have to ask though, if you are just blurring the original graphics, how does it hold up at higher resolutions? would be interested to see at 4x.

 

I actually made it at 4x first.

 

Looks great! I would suggest adding a bit of gaussian blur to the reflection so it's not sharper than the cloud it's reflecting.

I don't like those clouds. They are way to fuzzy/blurry. It's easy to tell that they are just the original clouds that have been blurred.

Though I do like the water part.

 

well I finished a sketch of Chop Chop. It's pretty good for my standards, but there are still a few things that irk me...

Anyway, I'll attempt coloring it, but I encourage someone else to do it too, because I know mine will come out like complete crap.

 

...Or you could just, you know, take 3 seconds to change the hue of the ICEknight's cloud in PhotoShop.

Hmm, I think you should try to make it look more spherical. Something similar to this:

 

Just a little stab, using the original sprite and the concept art posted earlier. Of course, it's not shaded, and the back part needs a bit more work, but it's my first attempt at one of the characters. If you like it, I'll take a shot at another one, maybe coconuts. I do love that monkeybot.
