I liked the Pixar approach personally, has a character look yet could still show emotion - if they ever do plan to do such a thing.

Agreed. The humans in Unleashed actually looked like Sonic characters; design-wise, they didn't clash as badly with Sonic as the ones in Adventure/Adventure 2/Sonic '06.

Funny looking animals and funny looking humans; good mix.

Yeah, honestly, if they're going to have humans I don't see why they wouldn't continue with the Unleashed approach. It looks rather nice in general, and Sonic looks pretty natural standing next to them...as natural as a blue hedgehog can look standing three feet high next to a human, anyway.

I may be biased since I'm such a Pixar fan, but hey.

It doesn't look Pixar-y to me, it looks generic CalArts-y. :specialed:

If nothing else, it's hard to deny that a character or two in Spagonia looks like Linguini's long-lost brother or something. :psyduck:

But erm, yeah. Tad off-topic I believe, so I'll shut up now. =P

Definitely the Unleashed approach. Realistic humans and Sonic characters just don't look right, especially in those cutscenes where's he's with Elise. I don't know what kind of approach they were trying to take with SA2 and Shadow. Whatever it was though was still too realistic. And in SA1... well I really dislike the general art style of anime and manga so there's a bit of bias there, but it didn't look quite as natural as what they went for in Unleashed. Eggman blended with the other human characters and so did Sonic. As far as Unleashed goes overall it felt like a true Sonic game regardless of it's realism. All the aesthetics were done right.

I agree that humans shouldn't be realistic but I'd prefer less Pixar and more Oshima's concept art Maddonna.

This is why PAL sonic 1 boxart wins, it uses the more young looking japanese sonic with pink eggman in the background, how can it NOT be bad?

I love this boxart. I can't see anything wrong with it, plus, you know, they drew it, not took one drawing of a character and put a bunch of crap around him. :v:

The genesis sonic 1 box is ok it's just that bumface sonic ruins it. The theme of having ghz in the background is great though as the mastersystem box is the same just with a different angle and rings everywhere. A personal favourate.

The character design is flawed, but as an image overall, I like it. Something always appealed to me about the way the American boxes were colored: they look airbrushed like something befitting either an album cover or the side of some creep's van...and I love it.

And really people if you're going to hate something just because "it's Assface Sonic", there are far worse examples to prove your point. the one on Sonic 3's box is pretty flawed and has a rather painful-looking hand gesture, but at least the background's cool and elaborate enough to divert attention.

What's utterly baffling about this to me is that it's in 3D...which means the person who made it (most likely) was able to turn around and view it from pretty much any angle, so why does it resemble a 2D drawing by someone with a poor understanding of depth? I can only imagine how horrible it looked from the side.

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
On the subject of how humans should look, well... I'm fine with most styles, but I was rather bugged out by the Pixar-style rip-off, personally. Might just be my dislike for them movies, though.

Makes me wonder, though -- am I the only one who liked '06's Eggman design? :v

Way to downplay some considerable differences. And you missed one of the most glaring ones: They made his head a lot more spherical and his spines much thinner. Some artists even render his spines as thin and razor-like, perhaps in response to artwork like that; indeed, I think Sonic 2 itself does that in some of its frames.

So someone noticed that as well. It's most noticeable when you run through a mobius strip.

No, you're not. Eggman's and Knuckles' character models are pretty much the only ones that I like in '06. Everyone else just looks off to me. I know Eggman's and Knuckles' models are off to an extent, but they don't bother me that much for some reason.

However, Eggman's realistic design both added to and took away from his character in that game. His realistic look made him seem more evil to me while it also made him look like less of a Sonic character, and thus a little out of place.

    Thank-you!

On the subject of this picture (new page, re-posting), some differences have been missed:

8- As mentioned above, his head is spherical and spikes are razor thin and in a mohawk.
If you're not looking at him perfectly fro mthe side he looks kind of awkward.
9- The eye shape is completely different.
A case of American Kirby is Hardcore? And of course, there's the ass/vagina where his brow meets.
10- American Sonic often has a longer body.
In this particular picture, it looks like his belly is hanging off even.

Ultimately he's very different. The same character clearly, just like modern Sonic is, but he does look very different.

It might be a case of ignorance on my part, though, because I grew up with the PAL one (albeit, it was the Canadian one, with little difference, save for those damn horizontal manuals). I honestly could care less about the US one, but my conclusion still has some truth to it, for example, the explanations for the differences I pointed out.

Now sprites? That's a different story... I way different story
