I?ve never actually played Knuckles Chaotix on the 32x itself only on emulator. It?s pretty much the only Sonic-type game I never played first time round. The first time I played it I used what is regarded as one of the best emulators ?Gens?. As a lot of you know this is regarded as a very good emulator with great speeds, sound etc.

When I first played Knuckles Chaotix I was amazed by how cool some of the music was. It just really is nice, pleasant sounding music, especially the following tracks from the game: This Horizon (Title theme), Door Into Summer, Combination, Midnight Greenhouse and Seascape. Those are my favourites from this game with a very delightful melody and sound.

One thing I did notice though was the lack of drums. When I first played Knuckles Chaotix on Gens the music sounded great but it was clear to me that the drum sounds in the music were very, very quiet and could barely be heard. This being the first time I had played Knuckles Chaotix I thought this was just the way the music was and I thought perhaps the developers had to cut the drum sounds out to save extra resources or something. I was wrong of course.

Anyway, I was happy enough listening to the Knuckles Chaotix music in this form.

A few weeks later though I ran the other good emulator Fusion. I?ve used Fusion many times before but I hadn?t used it in quite some time so I thought I would give it a go. I randomly loaded up Knuckles Chaotix and the first thing I noticed was how different the music sounded! It was the same music of course but one thing was different to when playing it in Gens, the music had drum sounds when I ran the game in Fusion but not in Gens. This also still happens when comparing both of the emulators at their latest version.

Right, my question basically is this - Which emulator do you think is playing the music in its purest, closest to original form? I?d imagine Fusion is because the drum sounds seem more apparent but maybe the drum sounds are actually quiet in the actual game on a 32x system? (Of course, I?ve never played the game on a 32x system so how am I to know). For those of you that played Knuckles Chaotix on the 32x or have a working 32x with Knuckles Chaotix, do you think you could tell me which emulator is achieving the most original sound here? If you have both Gens and Fusion and a Knuckles Chaotix rom try it out for yourself. It also seems it?s nothing to do with the sound settings as I?ve been playing about with that, it seems to be the emulators themselves and looks as though the sound is generally different when comparing the two emulators. Perhaps someone of a more advanced standpoint on the Knuckles Chaotix music could help me out here. I?m also making a Sega soundtrack CD so I need to know which emulator is playing the music correctly.

Thank you, it would be much appreciated.

I don't have a 32x either... however, Kega Fusion is generally regarded as the more accurate emulator, not only in terms of sound, but in pretty much everything else too. It's definitely not perfect, but it's pretty damn close.

If you're making a soundtrack CD, it'd probably be best to go with Fusion then.

Fusion. Gens has a horrid sound driver.

Fusion had hardware accurate PWM emulation... This is why the drums are much clearer and audible as the game plays. Gens has PWM emulation, but it's very quiet, and thusly inaccurate.

Thanks ever so much for the correction. Although I don't think I will ever commit the ridiculous act of placing my head into a bucket of live piranhas over a slight mistake on an internet forum, it's great of you to pick me up on this indeed though, thanks ever so much, I think you deserve a medal...

Unnecessary posts aside though, thanks for the replies, it looks like Fusion is the one then :)

Yes, Fusion by a long shot. The Gens one sounds so hollow without proper drums.

Like Tweaker was saying, PWM is a high quality extra sound channel the 32X uses. Now people who are emulating Genesis hardware have it down, but 32X still isn't perfectly emulated. Kega and Gens have good 32X support, but the PWM is quiet, and therefor poorly emulated.

Gens+ is pretty good. But Kega Fusion has better PWM emulation. Others like normal Gens suck.

Ah I see now, this and the other post regarding PWM by Tweaker explains everything I was wondering about. Thanks a bunch.

Yeah I also I tried Gens+ but it seemed that PWM was quiet there too. I suspect even Fusion isn't perfect but it sure is a lot better than Gens and Gens+ when it comes to PWM.

DEFINITELY Fusion. I have the 32X and Knuckles' Chaotix myself (Even though the electromagnetic plates were recently bent because of my stupid little cousin who can't keep her hands off my stuff! >.< therefore I can't play the 32X version ATM), and I have to go totally with the Fusion. I prefer Fusion over Gens overall anyway. As far as other than sound, I don't really see that Kega Fusion is better other than the fact that the entire monitor screen doesn't go black when you boot it up like with Gens. @__@

Electromagnetic plates? What electromagnetic plates? I wasn't aware that the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (in any form) or the 32x had any electromagnetic plates. Hmm... Are you talking about the contacts inside of the system?

    That'd be pretty easily fixable if you're careful enough. I think. I don't have a Genesis so I can't tell. =P

The 32X comes with two small metal plates that hold the cart flaps on the Genesis open. I asked about them in the Lounge, and the people who replied said that those plates actually aren't necessary for the 32X. Here's the thread.

Ah, forgot to mention: you can ajust volume for all sound chips with certain versions of Gens32 (Gens32 Surreal 0.001 for example). This mean that PWM is ajustable too, but you need to decrease volume for all other sound chips to 75% (except 'VOLUME') to make PWM loud enough:

If you have Gens32 Surreal (or any other version/release) that have volume adjustement), just set sliders like I did on the above screenshot.

Ooh, that looks handy. They should add it to Gens Plus. =P

Shame the Gens plus author seems quite unresponsive. I contacted him about making MP3 tool a gens plus plugin and he never replied :'(

I like the VBA-style 200% and 400% volume :P My speakers are fux0red (they play music when they are on and when they are off, changing the volume does pretty much nothing :P)
