One thing I am glad that tax has done is given the game true widescreen, that little extra viewing distance is well deserved in a sonic game. It will also help me in the later stages where I feel (in sonic cd) they are too cluttered.

If you ever have the chance Taxman, it would be great to see a hard mode of sorts for us sonic fans who have played these games to death :P or at least make the final boss harder!

Shortening/eliminating the post-hit invincibility could do the trick. =P

You know, this is something he should have thought of before. Now that Sega has been pitched the engine to them, Taxman will either be forced to surrender the rights to the engine or be unable to use the engine at all if he doesn't want to be sued. Publishers normally require developers to surrender the IP rights to them unless we're talking about a big developer, which isn't the case.

    Also lolwut
Looks like Sega follows the followers XD

Correction: I pitched the game to them, not the engine. The engine is only used as means for me to produce to finished product.

Yes, but Sega will want the game with the engine. They don't take only part of the things they receive, you know, they want it all or nothing. Also makes legalities easier to them (no shared copyright = easier to handle, etc.).

Suppose Sega do request the engine, what would you do then Christian?

I sincerely hope they don't ask for it myself. After all, you could be their go-to guy, should they want ports of the other Sonic games.

You forget that engines can be licensed for use, which would be the case here. The Retro Engine is its own brand, and therefore not tied to Sonic. It's like how Sonic Heroes uses Renderware. Anyway, that is why you have lawyers and contracts.

(BTW: It's kind of annoying when people start saying "HEY SEGA get Taxman's engine and make good ports of your games!" too :P) The point is for me to do work, not me giving my work to another Sega team :P. The Retro Engine is only as good as the person operatiing it.

If I was someone with power, I'd probably hire you if the engine is good and easy to port other games and then licence it for only SEGA to use. I don't think they'd let this kind of oportunity slip but they've been known to do outrageous things before.

That actually is quite a good point, and IMO, it may be the difference between seeing this come to fruition or not.

If SEGA wants the rights to everything (and I suspect, from a business standpoint, that will be the case,) I foresee a situation where SFGs like Sonic Nexus would have to be rebuilt from the ground up, again.

I hope you can replay past levels after you beat the game, in order to get the good ending. That's the one thing I really missed in the Gamecube port.

—Except they could maybe possibly make the argument that the engine is still derivative of their intellectual property.

    It was a fair question.

EDIT: Actually, the above post (mine and Flick's) doesn't matter, because if SEGA buys the rights to the RSDK outright, you're still screwed potentially.

And your fair question was debunked by the man himself.

EDIT (in response to your edit): Tax doesn't want to sell the rights to his own work, as he wants to use his RSDK for future endeavors. He's looking for a license for the finished product and that's all.

I understand that he pitched the game and not the engine. It doesn't mean they may not want both the game AND the engine.

The tech demo video is offline right now (apparently Taxman himself took it off), so it sounds like something is happening behind the scenes.

And that may be why the tech demo vid is offline right now.

Something evolved somewhere in the past hour.

And this is what I have been trying to explain. Publishers normally want to have as much as they can for themselves. Remember that in most of the cases those engines that are licensed are made by either big companies or companies owned by other big companies. Otherwise publishers will try to buy the rights to the engine and continue developing it themselves.

  20. Quick interjection: Why are you such an asshole about our hobbyist project all the time, Tristan? You and your bullshit editorialism is a really pesky thorn in our side. We on the Nexus team are doing what we do because we enjoy it, and we are trying to be professional about the whole thing because that's how it should be done.

It'd be one thing if we were out trying to change the world or make a few million bucks, but the truth of the matter is, it's Sonic fangaming. It's such a niche that we really shouldn't have to worry about some whiny melodramatic twentysomething that has seemingly nothing better to do than reblog SEGA RSS feeds and wish us failure every chance he gets... but that's life, right?

So, I'll leave you with this, Tristan: Why is it seemingly in your best interest that we fail?
