You know, I think that could be our ticket to having an influence on Sega's work with the Sonic series. For years we've been trying to give Sega our suggestions on how to improve the Sonic games, but we only did that as fans. Even though many of our ideas were helpful, Sega had nothing to gain nor lose from listening to us. To them, we're only a bunch of starry-eyed kids with overly active imaginations. But now for the first time, a Sonic fan gave Sega an idea in tangible form and presented it to them from a business perspective. Suddenly Sega has something to gain from Taxman's business proposal. He may just be the first Sonic fan to have an influence on Sega's decisions.

Maybe I should work towards a career as a professional level designer and present my level design concepts to Sega in the form of tech demos. Then they could hire me and then I can have an influence on the Sonic series. *Puts on a newspaper hat and holds up a wooden toy sword* Then I'll be the next Hirokazu Yasuhara! Just call me Carol Yas 2!

That Sonic CD presentation is very professional, so I don't see why Sega would say no. It is a very good idea... which is why Sega will probably say no. But hey, they are making some effort to reach out to the public this time. If they do agree to use Taxman's Sonic CD port, I might just have to buy me an iPhone soon. Excellent job either way.

Don't get your hopes up too high, it never works as it sounds on paper.

Okay, obviously it takes this thing we call effort to make it work, but I wager Taxman put a lot of effort into the Retro Engine (as if I have any idea how much) and the Sonic CD port. I doubt just any Sonic fan can put together a tech demo using Multimedia Fusion, send it to Sega and hope to make a business deal. It will take something that is marketable and professionally done. Then there's contacting Sega for the big proposal.

I dunno, this may be a once in a blue moon thing and I doubt they will start to accept a ton of indie made content asking for contracts, it's silly to think it's going to work.

I guess you're right. It's just like with today's economy. There are so many people looking for jobs that businesses are being bombarded with several applications. And there are so many applicants that these businesses can only bother to look at a handful of them so that maybe, just maybe, they could hire one for some extra paper work. You could make the same comparison for the indie content market. The only plausible solution would be to concentrate all of our efforts into one work instead of having a bunch of works compete with each other, but even that would be somewhat difficult.

We'll just have to see. We could always try sometime in the future.

Well... good time for my .mp3 player to go bust. Though I loath ipod, I'll probably get a touch one if this goes forward. I've been tentative about an iphone as well, but I'm even more against it than I'm with ipod. Who knows, well. we'll see.

It's not as if I hate apple, I just think their products are way too overpriced for what they are. Especially when there are options half the price (or more) in the market.

Still, this and Monkey Ball, which I have been flirting with shamelessly since it came out, would make it a sure buy.

    This.

    Do I want this?

I'm going to buy a iPod Touch because of it, how about that?

I agree, I am so getting an iPod Touch for this.

It's amazing how Sega's finally getting it, and would take this. This is undeniably awesome and the best thing to happen to the Sonic fangaming community since, well, ever. :v:

EDIT: Are you giving them the Retro Engine as well? If so, then it looks like we could finally get another real 2D Sonic game. =D

But if the engine is given to SEGA, it will not be free for us to use...

    being an asshole =P
With all those messages about "I'll buy an iPhone for this", both Sega and Apple would be stupid to not release it :v:
But there is a little huge detail... See, once a statistic said that 20% of projects that are pitched ever get into production, of which only 20% make it to release. That's 4% of projects being successful. With the big developers. Indie developers have a percentage near 0%, maybe unless you count those that self-publish on their page or something (but those rarely get much money either). So even if the game is good and such, chances for it to be released are slim.

Also Taxman, make sure to get paid because I'm pretty sure that Sega will make money off it :P </obvious>

Nope, why give away the tree when you can sell the apples?

  15. This has got to be one of the most awesome announcements I have heard in a long time.

Sega actually taking Ideas?! From FANS?!

And the fact that Taxman got through to them with Sonic CD and his Engine could be the biggest leap forward in the Sonic community yet.

I hope this one goes all the way...it deserves it.

    Congrats Taxman.

    Like said before, point taken.

Hopefully what this DOES do, however, is get Sega to understand that what makes them profit and a good reputation is the retro-styled Sonic games, and have this project knock the series straight. =P

Yet, once again, that's a slim chance.

Color me skeptical on the control implementation for an iPhone port. Besides that, I'll be observing this with interest.

Obviously it's no replacement for a real controller. It's a touch screen, you can only work with what you got :P... but compared to other platformers on the iphone (including Sonic 1), the controls are more a bit more responsive, which makes it feel pretty good.

I suppose. I experimented quite a bit with platformer controls on the iPhone and was never able to come up with anything that made sense and felt comfortable, which was somewhat of a shame since a Sonic-type game was one of the first things I was examining when trying to develop for the thing. Maybe I'll revisit it in the future. Oh well, my other game is coming along, so that's always good.

On another note, wouldn't it make more sense to do something original with the engine and cut out the middle man entirely when putting it for sale? Then again, considering the current state of the App Store with regards to advertising it seems only games with established properties would gain any real traction.
