Hmm, I see what you're getting at there. It's not the exact same melody but very similar. Funnily enough I discovered another example of this sort of thing lately - the intro to Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck WIthout You" is virtually identical to something I actually wrote back in 2002 (ish). I have a wav file around here somewhere, I should sue!

Yeah, that kinda thing happens all the time.
I once composed a brilliant little tune, thought it was the bees knees, created a great sounding synthaholic edition..

And then realised it was the pokemon theme.

    bugger....

It's a little subconscious thing your head does sometimes. Whenever I hear an instrument, my head seems to automatically link that with some kind of tune.
Kind of annoying when you realise why it does it!!

I kinda hear something. Not too much though, so it may just be your ears working or mine not.

And I know what you guys mean. I once made a hip-hop beat and thought it was amazing... then I turned on Brawl and heard Corneria City. :( Meh, I used it anyway.

    Time codes are your friends.

Also, can't hear the resemblance captain.

    Worst Chicago song ever.

And no, I'm not hearing a whole lot of similarity. I guess the tone changes could be considered slightly similar, but I don't believe for even half a second that its a derivative.

All I hear is a slight tone change starting at the chorus for both pieces.

But, in all honesty, WHY are we doing this topic? So what if there's a similarity between one song and an older one? That's pretty much standard in the music world. Jay-Z's 99 Problems uses the same chorus as an Ice-T song of the same name. The intro to Linkin Park's No More Sorrow is similar to the intro for Megadeth's Sweating Bullets. Hell, a song I wrote for my band, Worth It To Me, was inspired by Setu-Firestorm's The Fade, and even uses a line similar to "Looking from the outside, maybe you'll see, you are worth it to me." The only difference in my version is that it uses "look" instead of "looking". So, again, I ask, WHY are we making a topic about the originality of a song?

why do I get the feeling that the words "Michael Jackson's Sonic 3" could maybe answer that question?

Granted that's a topic about song originality, that was quite the discovery as I recall, considering that many of Sonic 3's songs had similarities with one Micheal Jackson song or another.

But this goes to prove my point. Standard protocol in songwriting is finding a beat you like, then changing it with your own twist. If anyone picks up on the similarity between your song and the older one you based it on, kudos to them.

And yes, I do realize that you are suggesting that this may not be the only similarity between the game's music and that of Chicago, but 1. It's hard to find the similarity even in this case, and 2. We don't know that there are any other similarities. In all honesty, this is probably a coincidence.

This topic is here because the TC found a similarity in two songs that he felt appropriate to share with other like-minded fans of both Sonic music and the series as a whole. Pretty straightforward.

Mind you, a music similarity does not have to inherently imply theft, inspiration, or uncredited work; it's just something neat to listen to and draw comparisons about. Instead of getting all high and mighty about how you think that you're "above' these sort of topics, why don't you consider adding a constructive reply or going on your merry way? There's no need to take a pretentious dump all over the thread when there are some people who are interested in this sort of thing.

I felt it was an interesting comparison but I myself felt it more appropriate to say it just takes its cues from many classic-style rock anthems/ballads.

I feel it sounds as much like that as it does David Glen Eisey's Sweet Victory.

Yeah, you're right. Sorry. I didn't intend to come off that way. I just didn't feel it needed its own topic. It would fit fine in the Supreme Topic of Other Knowledge. But, whatever, I've made my statement, you've made yours, I'll back off now.
