Last year, SSRG staff from the stone age gathered together at Retro World Expo (RWX) in Hartford, Connecticut to talk about the Sonic research scene and how it was back in the '90s and early 2000s. (As a matter of fact, there's still two videos coming down the pipe showing those talks in full.) This year, me SSNTails, Andy Wolan, and Striker will be there again. Content we're presenting will be very different this time. We have two panels: one on FM synthesis, and one on DOOM map editing. We demand that every single person here interested in this stuff come out and watch us blab. But we'll settle for one or two of you of that's what it comes down to! Let me briefly describe these two panels and why your life is incomplete unless you come out to watch... ========== FM Synthesis ========== Presented by: Saxman FM synthesis is fun. Many people here know a thing or two about it. But have you ever tried to take a real life waveform and try to recreate it on an FM synthesizer? Well, that's what I want to show you how to do by using some basic principles of FM that, frankly, I have not seen taught or talked about elsewhere (and I've looked!) I will also talk a little about how Yamaha FM synthesizers are close relatives of the FM chips used in your favorite video game consoles and arcade cabinets. I will port sounds from Genesis games to my Yamaha TX81Z, and vise versa. ========== DOOM Map Editing ========== Presented by: SSNTails and Saxman I first played DOOM on the 32X back on the day. Such an amazing game. And very influential too. Here, me and SSN will go through the ins and outs of making new worlds for DOOM. Yes, there have been *many* new maps created, but not everyone who played the game got into that part of the fanfare. So that's what we'll explore. If you've been curious about how it's done but never taken the dive before, then this is for you. SSN of course the co-creator of Sonic Robo Blast 2, and while I'm not really connected to that game, both of us used to make a lot of different maps. So it'll be fun to share our knowledge and insights. Go to https://retroworldexpo.com for details. We'll see you there. Or you'll be sorry.
0% chance of my ass getting to Connecticut but I'm very much looking forward to that FM synthesis talk in video form at some point in the future
For those on the fence on attending, here is a sample of the energy Saxman alone brings to the live panels. Imagine all 4 of us at once!
Still undecided on attending? How about some more guests? Not only will Saxman, SSNTails, Striker and myself be there, with two new panels by Saxman and SSNTails: https://x.com/RetroWorldExpo/status/1807407907291484331 But Headcannon will be there as well. Stealth will host the panel, "Headcanon to Headcannon: Game Dev for Fun and Profit", and will also have a booth promoting some games his team is working on well. https://x.com/RetroWorldExpo/status/1806750213593612540 In addition, the follow celebs from the Sonic universe will be there: Mike Pollock https://x.com/RetroWorldExpo/status/1806012875053404545 Pete Capella https://x.com/RetroWorldExpo/status/1805323069231173882 and Jason Griffith https://x.com/RetroWorldExpo/status/1805272059812979200
RWX Panel Schedule has been released. Times may change (but unlikely.) Including the ones relevant to this thread only. Time\Panel Room (Saturday) 2PM A Sonic Reunion Panel(Jason G, Pete C, and Mike P) 2PM B FM Synthesis for Gamers and Musicians (SSRG - Saxman) 4PM B Using the NES Expansion Port for FM Sound (Justin S - Might be of interest to some given Saxman's panel) Time\Panel Room (Sunday) 1PM B Doom World Building (SSRG - SSNTails) 2PM A Headcanon to Headcannon : Game Dev for Fun and Profit (Headcannon - Stealth) Final schedule will appear here: https://retroworldexpo.com/schedule/
The timeslot after Stealth's Headcannon panel (3pm-4pm) is now vacant. We were told we could do whatever we want during that slot. So for those attending RWX, would you like to see: - an extended Q&A session with Stealth (maybe another 15-20 minutes) - an off-the-cuff presentation of the "History of ROM Hacking" panel from last year (will be the same as last years but will include Stealth) - some other topic
I enjoyed going to the FM synth and Headcannon panels! Sad I had to leave part way through the Headcannon one, so I'm looking forward to whenever y'all get to uploading a vid of it. I'll have to remember to bring something to get signed by folks next time haha.
It was nice meeting you. Thanks for coming out and supporting us, and enjoy your time covering SAGE next month!
Somehow I missed this thread ahead of time. By the time I knew Andy responded to my post in the other forum I was at the expo talking to him! So great to meet everyone and chat!
