Oh, so they're only considering to use again the very thing that made Sonic Heroes bad. Speaks volumes about them.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
I thought it was the inferior game engine, slippery controls, repetitive design, multi-hit enemies, cheesefest dialogue, and terrible boss fights that made Heroes bad.

The team mechanics were just underdeveloped to the max.

    Think about what you're saying.

    - team based mechanic
    - SEGA

<Knuckles & Tails> "POWER OF TEAMWORK YEAH GO SONIC *assgrab* *assgrab*"

Well, had the game not been based around the team mechanics, most of that stuff wouldn't have been implemented the way it was.

Heroes was incredibly bad, mostly for the above reasons. The team mechanic was okay as a one-off I guess, but given that it was copy-pasted 4x, it got old way fast. I wouldn't miss such a game.

It also reminds me why I can't stand Sonic's entourage of friends: too much jabbering with annoying voices and poorly insubstantial dialogue. Good god, I hated that so much. If they really want to try again with this crap, then either limit your characters or make them swappable. No "Team Sonic" or "Team Dark", just "Team Whatever the Fuck You Want". One campaign, one world, multiple combinations of teams. And for God's sake, if there's going to be a story or a script or anything, try not to make it terribly unbearable. And no Super Bubbles. That was retarded.

Hey, now that I think about it, that team mechanic could make for a decent game if done right. The game could even come with it's own deathmatch or team versus counterparts, as well as race/time attack. That kind of stuff would justify bringing back more obscure Sonic characters like Fang and Mighty, but it would only work if the physics are solid and the overall game design makes for enjoyable game experiences. It'll be like Sonic Heroes plus Sonic the Fighters but minus the suck.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually enjoyed Heroes. Flight mode sucked balls, though.

  8. What about one team with interchangable members?

You're not ^ I actually fucking LOVE Heroes. Yes, the dialogue was cheesy, but I imagined Sonic to be that way anyway. I thought the controls were fine- tighter than Shadow's by about 110% and pretty much the same as Adventure 2's with faster characters. I thought the team work was nice, and I have no idea what half of you mean when you say that it made it a chore. There were literally TWO buttons for swapping characters, which were the same as the 'action' buttons on Adventure 2, only it also swapped your character model. The levels were so retro and Sonic-like it was beyond belief, and it had a simplistic yet fun and happy story, just like the classics. The level layouts and orders were really good, and it had decent voice acting and great music too. It also had a kick-ass multiplayer, which wasn't as good as Adventure 2's, but great nonetheless.

It also had a lot of reply value, and a lot of time and effort went into making it coherent with past titles, with the little secrets and extras which reminded you that you were actually playing a SONIC title. Examples being the little quips the characters would often say, the stand still animations if you left them too long, the secret 1-up boxes and stuff- just little things which made the game really stand out from the Dreamcast era, and gave us hope of future improvements in the series in that direction, which sadly never happened.

You could spend days trying to list all of the individual problems and glitches that made something suck/awesome, but what I think it really boils down to is craftsmanship. From what I can tell, developers are usually aware if their product will be crap during production.

    Also, criticism and praise will always be subjective to a degree. I mean, you can make anything sound bad;

"Portal is a short, one-trick-pony whose only identifiable feature is its gushing overrated praise. The game is your typical puzzle oriented mouse-in-maze scenario complete with a pill popping HAL wannabe named GLADDOS as your chatterbox tour guide. The object of the game is to obtain an uninspiring cake as reward for your efforts, which they never give to you."

The Team mechanic was just the obligatory gimmick.

Oh wow, I never expected my news from the Sega PR to span across two different forums, maybe even more.

Anyways, I decided I should probably make my first post my two cents on the whole thing. Honestly, the guy was a nice guy, he knew his stuff, or at least he seemed to. Except for most things related to Sonic Colors, since he was mostly doing Sonic 4 and just filling out for the Colors PR who was taking a break. Though this is the same PR who dubiously said they ported the Hedgehog engine to the Wii, he did seem to know his stuff on at least that much.

Anyways, I will say this much: He did say he does not primarily work on Sonic titles, but works on pretty much anything else Sega. I forget what he mentioned, but if I recall, I think he said he had a part in Ristar's creation- don't quote me on that, though (I don't want people taking my subjective memory as fact).

Honestly, I'm surprised it caused some debate over it, but hey, I personally liked Heroes. Until I played it again later and the flaws began to stare me in the face too much for me to bear it. (Funnily enough, only other Sonic games to do so were 06 and Shadow- which the latter is of course a side character spinoff and thus not really a Sonic game.)
