A new interview with Mike Hayes, the president of SEGA of Europe and America (right?) went in an interview with CVG today, Anyways, it seems in the interview SEGA thinks Sonic is split up into 4 parts. First you have the Mario & Sonic component, which though strange I kinda' guess makes sense. He then says the other parts of Sonic are Sonic solo titles, like Unleashed, Secret Rings, and Sonic 4 I guess. Then there's the All-Star Titles, another weird inclusion but I guess it makes sense. Finally, he says something we haven't seen in a while, but team-centric games like Sonic Heroes.

SEGA says those are the four type of games they want to develop, but they don't want to overdo Sonic so they are laying them out separately and apart in a marketing strategy. He also hints that we may see something E3 and talks about the core of Sonic and finding it in Sonic 4 while delivering to hardcore fans in the DLC market since DLC games are usually more hardcore audiences and they can appeal more through that medium.

    Interesting, to say the least.

Sweet, Heroes was an interesting concept, and I would have liked it better if it were improved upon.

Maybe it has to do with the new 3D game that they mentioned that they're developing.

And a Mario & Sonic sequel? Maybe Mario and Sonic at South Africa 2010? :v:

Heroes 2 would be good if they didnt recycle the same 6-7 zones for all 4 teams

You mean like different paths for each team or, also, totally diferent zones (not all of them, one or two) for each one?

Yeah, like that would be even better

Also, as far as the teams, it was almost the same game four times. That just gets boring. Heroes should have at least changed the level routes and/or level order for each team. If the teams had more unique abilities, and weaknesses, like in Sonic 3, the levels could've have things only certain teams can or can't access, like they did with the Knuckes and Tails areas. This way, the game would have stayed fresh throughout each play through, while maintaining the core gameplay.

Basically, Heroes attempted to do so much of what people wanted, except that they somewhat didn't follow through with them. For example, Special Stages, and emerald collection. They could have been so much better and had so much potential, but didn't do it justice. An epic Sonic vs Metal Sonic fight would have been great as part or the last story or something. Instead you fight only Metal Overlord, first with all the other characters, then with Super Sonic and Super S-Knuckles and S-Tails. Another one is the Team System. They could've and should've spent more time perfecting it (the whole game for that matter). It had so many good ideas, but could have been executed better. Tragically, the flaws it had sort of poisoned it, leaving the good aspects to go mostly unnoticed.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
    Four categories of division, huh...?

    1. Sonic Solo
    2. Sonic's "Shitty" Friends
    3. Sonic Spinoffs
    4. Sonic Whoring Out With Mario

Sounds good to me. A divided franchise for a divided fanbase.

Incidentally, when the hell are they going to make that Sonic/Mario crossover platforming game that everyone and their great aunt Tessie would buy?

A Sonic Heroes 2 would be fantastic if they allowed for a co-op mode, really redid the levels, and mix things up a bit more with the different teams. But I like this strategy. They cater to everyone just a little. It's a shame it's come to that but you know what if I get something every now and then that's fine

I'm surprised he didn't separate the Story book series. Maybe they're done with that (hopefuly)? That or he included it in the Sonic himself category. Also what about Sonic 06 where does that fit?

Sonic Team work title I'm guessing. I bet Sonic Adventure fits into that category as well.

Mario seems to get a long fine with this strategy.

This is true but you don't often (at least I don't) see Galaxy fans bitching about how awful New Super Mario Bros Wii is. While the fans may have preferences, most games in that series are enjoyable no matter what.

And I suppose it could be the same exact way. Sonic Heroes was a good idea. Sonic 06 could have been a great game. Sonic and the Black Knight could have been epic. Unfortunately all were executed wrong and in some cases horridly (I suppose I can't talk about Black Knight because I've never played it but I digress). Only problem left is how stubborn Sonic fans are, with those who love nothing but Sonic 1 to 3 and Knuckles and those who think that Sonic 06 is god (they do exist somewhere).

Bleh, what about Sonic with other characters that's not team-based fluff. Where does the big fat 3D Sonic game where you can choose from 3 or 4 characters for different approaches through the same explorable levels fit into that?

Probably under teamwork. I'm guessing teamwork implied multi character. Or if that's not the case than solo Sonic adventures, where characters play like Sonic but not too different.

If they were to do teamwork it better be optional stuff. I want a 3D Sonic where it isn't glitchy or different in level design, gameplay or artstyle, dangit, and I'm ready to play a Sonic game where the characters don't play too different from each other (and isn't Black Knight; because it kept to that formula but with terrible gameplay). Heroes was so close but so far away.

That was the problem with Heroes. It depended too much on other characters' actions, and using them rapidly by force through the stages. If they could take what Heroes was working with, make the gameplay and level design more like the classics/SA1/heck SA2 (and allow some freedom in who your partner is), we'd have a winner. Too bad it won't happen. :/

Sonic Heroes 2 would be cool. If I will be able to play as flying characters without having to carry two other people around at all times. If they implemented co-op in a similar fashion to Sonic 2 (computer controlled followers that a second player can control whenever they feel like it), which Shadow the hedgehog actually did. Fuck, just combine the follower system of Shadow/Sonic 2 with the team based, switch-between-characters-at-will gameplay of Heroes, throw in some classic physics maybe, and there you go.

This would be interesting to see =P A Mario Football sequel with less of those bloody smash moves and Sonic IP inserted alongside the Mario stuff - could work, only there's not a chance in hell they'd get one done in time at this point, plus it's a bit too close to the Winter Olympics. Maybe for the Brazillian World Cup? =P

Sonic 06 would count as one of the Solo titles, I guess - but much like the Storybook series, I hope both are never seen again.
