I thought it would be cool to have a discussion about the music in Sonic games. We know the majority of the games have had very good music, but just which one is your favorite?

Mine would either be Sonic 1 or Sonic 3K.

I don't know, I guess it's between Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. I mean, I love Star Light Zone and Labyrinth Zone, but I also love Mystic Cave Zone, Oil Ocean Zone, Wing Fortress Zone and Hidden Palace Zone.

Sonic Adventure 1 has the best sound track in my opinion. Every track fits its level perfectly, and are each nice tracks on their own. Amy's theme needs to die, though.

I don't think Amy's theme needs to die - in fact I enjoy listening to it.

It is a very jazzy track.

The lyrics leave somewhat to be desired (don't all Sonic lyrics?) however, I always thought I heard the line "It was so cute, I had to shave it" and giggled continuously like the teenager I was.

As for my favourite? Sonic CD Eur/JP.

Tidal Tempest Present can chill me from a murderous rage to this day.

I like a lot of the concept music that Chris Senn and hxc have from Xtreme, but if that doesn't count, then the Sonic CD Eur/Jap soundtrack.

Sonic 1 and 2. Masato Nakamura really was a genius.

Sonic Adventure 2. I liked the mix of styles, but I really enjoyed Sonic, Shadow, and Eggman's respective music. And, of course, that was the game that introduced me to Crush 40 (I didn't get Adventure until after Adventure 2)

    Various Artwork & Music, :smug:
Out of the Genesis/MegaDrive music, the Sonic 3D Blast (Gen/MD) soundtrack is the only one that gives me a true nostalgic feeling. It has such a different feel to it than the other games. Some zones like Gene Gadget and Volcano Valley have really cool intro effects. Other zones such as Puppet Panic Act 2 are arranged so intricately that it almost has a haunting feel to it. As you get closer to the end of the game, the stages get darker and darker, and the music follows along nicely. When you finally reach Puppet Panic, it's like the game is telling you "get pumped". The fact that you get to hear the opening story theme near the end of the game is such a neat concept, and it was like the first time it had ever been tried. The music is more than just cool-sounding, but it has a lot of atmosphere in it.

Every track is so powerful that it seems to give each stage a big part of its own personality. The PC/Saturn soundtrack would never sound right to me because it just doesn't have the same feel to it, a lot of it sounds cheesy and generic compared to the original tracks *cough*DiamondDust*cough*. The Gen/MD soundtrack was the perfect salute for Sonic's final venture in the 16-bit era, and was pulled off so beautifully that it still holds a special little place in my heart. Truth be told, I think Sonic 3D just wouldn't be Sonic 3D without its great music - heck, it's part of the reason I still play the game (occasionally :F) to this day. Don't get me wrong, the PC/Saturn music is okay, but it just doesn't seem as powerful to me.

Out of the new games, I'm going to say Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Next especially stand out to me. The other games still have good music, but those three stand out to me the most. Out of all though, I could never pick just one soundtrack from the entire game series.

Sonic Adventure 1. Every song was detailed and beautifully crafted, and still managed to fit perfectly with their respective stages. Some songs, especially the brass-driven (Hot Shelter, Red Mountain) tracks and It Doesn't Matter, really ascend the level of "good soundtrack" to the point of being just plain amazing pieces of music (something only Chrono Trigger and Mario Galaxy can do, usually).

I'd have said Sonic 2k6 (the soundtrack was the one good thing about it), but those horrible R&B tracks (Sweet Sweet Sweet, My Destiny) really kill it. Also, it wouldn't be entirely fair since All Hail Shadow is re-used from the (FAR SUPERIOR!) Shadow The Hedgehog and Sweet Sweet Sweet is... well, from Sonic 2.

S3K, but with the original S3 songs instead of their replaced versions in S3K. Second favorite is Sonic Rush Original Groove.

Sonic Heroes. I love the music to Ocean Palace, Bingo Highway, Lost Jungle, and Egg Emperor in particular. I just wish that the amen break samples weren't so overused, but I guess since that's how the title theme starts it's somewhat forgivable. Still, keeping them for later games is what really turned me off from it; otherwise I wouldn't mind so much.

Sonic Adventure is pretty cool, too. Red Mountain Part 1, Chaos 6, Eggman's theme, Zero's theme, Hot Shelter, Sky Deck, and the characters' theme songs (Tails' theme song: WOO VAGUELY HOMOEROTIC IMAGERY) are all really freaking sweet. However, I really don't like nearly anything done by Fumie Kumatani for the soundtrack, except maybe for the windy valley tornado area music. So I'm not a big fan of most of the chao stuff, nor for that matter the adventure field songs. There's certainly a lot more stuff in this game, and a lot of it is very good, but I give the edge to Sonic Heroes just because the only song that I don't like very much is We Can.

Among the genesis titles, it has to be Sonic 3 / S&K, preferring the Sonic & Knuckles title screen music and such. The only thing I don't like about it is that all of the Sonic & Knuckles level tracks feel like they were pared down significantly from the original versions compared to the ones from Sonic 3.

Does Sonic Unleashed count? Every piece of music they showed, I loved.

    Also, SA1 and Sonic 2.

  15. Ah, it's hard to pin down really. I think the tracks I like best remind me of actually growing up with Sonic and stuff like that.
I like Sonic 1, 2 and 3 soundtracks, which makes sense to me. When I hear them I think 'Oh yeah, do you remember?' I'd also fight the corner for Japanese Sonic CD. I like the little vocal additions.

Out of the original 16-bit games, I'd say S3&K and S3D personally. And S3D's soundtrack is the main reason why I love the game.

And then there's a fair few tunes on Sonic CD I love also.

    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
Everybody here knows I'll say the JP Sonic CD soundtrack. I also know I'll probably get about five people telling me how the US one is better, like that'll make me change my opinion.

But, the soundtrack is usually the saving grace for many bad Sonic games at least. I'm not saying it's the universally good thing in the series (Rivals 1 and 2 put paid to that little theory), but it can often make a sour pill easier to swallow (Like Shadow the Hedgehog. I would hate upon Mad Matrix for all eternity had it not such a funky groove going with it).

I like this ones: Sonic CD (US), Sonic Rush (The Original Groove Rush), some tracks from Sonic 3D Blast Saturn and Sonic Heroes. I don't have a favorite among them...
