I've been cataloging in-level text from Sonic Adventure 2. Things like billboards in City Escape and warning signs. My sig is one example of my favorite; I had never noticed the small, white-on-yellow text at the bottom of the sign before. There were many, interesting looking, but hard to read signs do to camera limitations. So I set out to find the original textures to read off in a 1:1 ratio, undistorted by 3D.

It took me a while, but I... found them. I bulk uncompressed the PRS files with predec auto.

In the event directory of SA2, there were a few files that stuck out from the rest. Most of the cutscene files came in groups of nine. But there were some like, "EVESD4.BIN" that didn't match the naming system. I opened it in a hex editor, so see if it has any ASCII. (Many of the files have bits of ASCII for what seems to be for things like referencing textures.)

Instead, I found the German subtitles for dark side.

Ok, so the number in the filename is the language. The second to last character is what story is goes with. I guess S means script or subtitle. Unfortuantly, there doesn't seem to be anything (obvious) that shows who is saying what, just what is said.

Quite funny... the sound effect have onomatapeas. The ARK goes "wub wub wub wub," when it viberates, for example. Huh. Even the FMVs have subtitles...

I looked though the last story file a bit more (EVMESL1.BIN)... Huh, Sonic called Robotnik an egghead during their reunion... Then I read pass the transformation sequence... (Quuuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebam!)

(By the way, these are ordered as they are in the English last story file, just formated a bit-- nothing cut out.)
So... does anyone else know about this? I find it really hard to believe no one has stumbled onto some plain ASCII before. I haven't found any references on Google. I mean, it plain ASCII! Surely, someone has found it before, or maybe my... version... was changed when it was released as some kind of joke? I haven't actually put this version in my DC. I thought it was cool at first, when I found the subtitles with the sound effects, FMVs, and ending put in. But after finding such seeming important text, the more I think about it, the more I feel like I'm being tricked...

Interesting. Looks like the final bit of cinema after the Last story was originally to have subtitles as well as some extra dialogue not seen in the final product. I almost wish they had kept it.

Very interesting; looks like a lot was cut from the game script around the Last Story's ending. Also very interesting that there are unused subtitles of onomatapeia to match the sound effects..

On a side note, I'm really annoyed they cut Eggman's extra dialogue - though it may have taken away from the mood of the ending a little, it would've reminded the player that Eggman and Sonic are primarily rivals - aswell as setting the stage for an oldskool Sonic vs. only Eggman confrontation in a future game!

EDIT: Also, on the point of it being hard to tell who says what, it looks to me like most of the cut dialogue (aside from the Tails / Eggman segment) is between the President and his secretary.. though, do the characters all cheer on Sonic and Shadow like that in the final game, after Sonic's line "No way that's getting through!"? I remember them doing it in the Sonic X adaption of SA2, but I no longer have a completed SA2 save to check if they said it all in the game. =/

Also, either the text along with "No way that's getting through!" is formatted incorrectly in the file, or Shadow was originally supposed to say the line from the looks of it. Since, all the text is grouped in two-line segments to be displayed at the same time, with a few one-line segments for short individual lines. However, the line "Go for it, Sonic!" is grouped so as to be displayed at the same time as "No Way that's getting through!", as if they were part of the same line..
I'm more inclined to believe that this is a formatting error, though, since directly below that and also grouped together are the two lines "Shadow, we're counting on you!" and "I'm counting on both of you!", which is either one very poorly-written line or two lines accidentally grouped together. =P

EDIT2: Though it'll make this post ridiculously long, just wanted to give my two cents on who the missing lines are likely to belong to. Check it out and see if I screwed up anywhere (especially lines actually said in the final, since as I said I no longer have a completed save to make checks against); to me, it seems the most likely combination.

Whew, there ya go. =P Could be completely wrong, but.. using existing characters in the game, it seems the most likely match-up of dialogue to characters. The only ones I'm not sure of are the miscellaneous ones of everyone aboard the ARK, since it's four short lines it's hard to tell who's supposed to be who. As I said, feel free to point out why I'm wrong with this.

Next question: Anyone got the SA2 ADXs? =P It'd be interesting to see if any progress was ever made on creating the cut parts of the scenes, or not. Were any lines recorded which match up with the unused lines in the game script, for example? Probably not, or I'd guess they would've been found among the ADX's by now. Actually, has anyone even looked through SA2's ADX's all that thoroughly?

I just got back from a final exam... Today of all days. Anyways.

I've already tried extracting the ADX files from the AFS file, but they came out corrupted. I don't know why exactly, but most likely my computer's flakey RAM corrupted it when I copied it onto my hard drive, or messed up the extraction. I'll try again later.

I'd like to note that the last story is the most heavily modified part of the game. In hero and dark stories, the amount of cut material is limited to mostly one or two lines in every, maybe, four or five scenes. (Sound effects aside.)

The most interesting change in them the hero and dark text is that the text for the "shoot the moon" FMV; dark and hero versions have different text in different files, even though the same thing is spoken. And dark's version of it doesn't have correct line breaks; the text would go off screen how they are set up. Maybe dark's version was an early translation, and hero's the polished form? Hero's is less wierd to read...

    Edit:

It is a formatting error on my part. Instead of doing it the right way, and making something to format it for me, I opened it up in notepad and formated that way. The script uses hex 07 for a line break. (Shows up as the square in notepad.) If there are hex 00 before the line break (Shows up as space,) I added two lines. I just checked the original hex file, and there should be seperation between the two lines. There are some wierd ones that I double checked when I formatted the whole thing (They used a double space when they could have used a single), but appearently not that one.

Yeah... I thought it was the secretary at first... but I can't see her giving lines like that. She's very formal in her one cutscene... One scene isn't really enough to fully know how she acts. But she CONTINUES to be formal in her theme. Character personalities carry over to themes. For example, Sonic goes, "Don't let the dark side win!" when you open the two player menu with the Sonic theme. The lines don't fit...

I think there's a third character in there. I could see Amy giving those lines, but I don't think that's right. The best idea I can come up with is the little girl from the final FMV who makes you vomit when she clasps her hands together. She carries over her vomit inducing powers. :P

Hmm, very interesting.. Does indeed look like the Dark version is an earlier version of the subtitles. o_o Same general theme, but not fleshed-out and as you said not formatted correctly - hell, the last half of it is almost exactly the same, aside from shortening one line and lengthening another.

You say there's other cut lines aside from the SFX, too? o_o Sounds interesting. Any chance of an upload of the entire English game-script at some point?

    EDIT:
...But then why would she be in the same place as the President and the Secretary? =P Plus, aside from that one line all of them can pretty much be attributed to either the President or the Secretary. I wouldn't put it past just being a bit of seemingly out-of-character writing. Plus the later line,
..is similarly vomit-inducing. =P If not for the addition of "Mr. President" at the beginning of that line, I would've put it and the other one as "Unknown".

But, anyway. As I said, mine are only guesses, so you could be right in that being a line said by someone else who's with them. The only way to know for sure would be if they recorded the lines for the scene and left them in the game, which given how many unused lines are in the original Sonic Adventure isn't totally out of the question.

Here. I'm planning on making a website with my Sonic Adventure 2 text collection and I'll probably add the scripts to it, but for now:

    http://www.students.uwf.edu/aen3/scripts.zip

    Edit:
I figured he could have been riding around in his limo, and stopped when he heard the news. I can easily imagine her speaking some of those lines with a voice that causes cavities.

Cheers. =P Haha, they missed a golden line there, in the scene after Sonic defeats the Big Foot.. makes his "What?!" upon seeing Shadow seem a bit less abrupt, by having the full line as "These robots are a pain in the... What?!".

Also, again a case of poor memory on my part - does the Dark Side Story actually show Eggman kidnapping Amy in the final? The script certainly has dialogue for it, though it's preceeded with an "Inside the Pyramid" scene marker, which would imply they left Amy down in the pyramid originally and that it was only Eggman's subsequent kidnapping of her which brought her to the ARK - something which, in the copy of the script here, no longer makes sense, since Eggman left for the ARK in the preceeding scene and the Hero story shows Amy with Sonic and Co. on the ARK prior to her kidnapping..

Presumably this is a case of SEGA not updating the Dark script's unused script portions, as shown with the "Eggman Empire" FMV script, which is updated to match the final game in the Hero script but remains an early and basic translation in the Dark script.

If this scene is indeed used (it's been a while, and as I keep saying I don't have a complete save anymore - however, Eggman actually finding Amy seems too big of an omission to make for the Dark Side Story), then I presume the "In the pyramid" marker was left off the beginning and that it takes place on the ARK, otherwise it no longer makes complete sense in the context of the story.

For some reason, the time markers are placed after the scene they're used for. The scene is in the game.

Yeah, noticed that now; was about to edit my post to save anyone replying and pointing out that I'm an idiot who can't read, but looks like I was too late. XD Interestingly, though, a couple *do* store it before, such as Eggman's intro to Sand Ocean (or whichever one's the level where Eggman's getting back to his pyramid base - third level on the Dark Side Story). Weird.

This is certainly very interesting. With the "I know they can do it" line, I thought that could've been just some random citizen of Earth. The moment I read that part I imagined a scene where the President got out of his limo after seeing Gerald on a giant screen. =D

Woah, like 90% of all that president diolouge happened word-for-word in the Sonic X SA2 arc. I'm serious, "You know, when I was a kid, I used to dream about heroes like them and their heroic deeds.", "PRESIDENT: That's ridiculous! There's no way two hedgehogs can stop the colony now!

SECRETARY: They can! I believe in them! Together...they can do it. I just know it!"
    That's all in there.

TapamN this is an excellent find. ^_^

Would you be able to extract the Japanese dialogue, or the English and Japanese dialogue for Sonic Adventure and Sonic Shuffle.

Having the Japanese dialogue would be a great help, as it would be easier to see which bits SoA changed.

    ^_^

I haven't seen that part of Sonic X in English. I have Japanese ReadVideo of it, but no subtitles, so I had no clue what they were saying. (Well, I knew it had to be similar to SA2, but I didn't know about what they were saying in changed parts.)

I haven't managed to get the Japanese subtitles to display with a Japanese font yet. When I manage to, I'll post them.

I just "acquired" a PC readable version of Dreamcast SA. If I find its subtitles, I'll post them, too. I'll check Sonic Shuffle if I find it.

In the SX adaption Eggman does talk about how that the Earth is now saved, he still has something to conquer. I believe in the English dub, the conversation goes something like this..

Tails: "We couldn't have done it without your help, the planet Earth is safe"
Eggman: "Yes......and now that you've saved the planet, I can conquer it! Hahahaha!!"
Tails: "You STILL want to conquer the Earth?"
Bocoe/Decoe: "Affirmative, you may join us if you like!"
    Tails: "Eggman.."

I dunno how the conversation goes in the Japanese version, it may be closer to the cut SA2 dialogue. (Minus Bocoe and Decoe)

To be honest, I don't think the 4kids script ever had anything directly related with SA2.

I was going to type a huge post here about what I've found, but Firefox crashed-- twice-- and I don't feel like typing it all in. Luckly, I copied and pasted this out before I hit submit.

    Synopsis:

Found Sonic Adventure subtitles. In everything. Unlikely to find unused stuff; unused subtitles wouldbe in unused cutscenes...

Found Chao Adventure files. Default English Chao; Michael, all stats five, normal Chao. Default Japanese Chao; Object, all stats 999, running Chao.

Can't get voices from SA2, even though works on DC. Modified AFS/ADX format?

Found Chao Adventure 2 files. Text combinations show Sonic Team has problems in the head.

Text for debug level select found in TITLE.BIN. Someone make CodeBreaker codes, please.

Found enemy types. (There are 22 types of Big.) Some kind of in-level debug mode. Someone make CodeBreaker codes, please.

Chao Kindergarden seriously cut down. Was online. Chao Adventure 2 story editor. Library. "Public Square." Chat rooms. Black market. Online Chao stats. Trading. Password protected Chao.

Omochao guided tour for Chao Garden.

"NETWORK(MINIGAME)" in CART.BIN. For download event, or planned online mode?

    Edit: It won't link.
    Edit2: Better idea.
    Get it here: http://www.students.uwf.edu/aen3/sa2 stuff.zip

Edit3: Wha! I just noticed: Mentioned on The GHZ!

    (Hmm... double post or not?)

I just looked though the SA2 demo that came with PSO.

Unlike the full version, I can actually rip the ADX files out of the AFS and play them back. It has the general speech samples for everyone. Brief shouts, laughing, and mumbling. It also has Sonic's 2P speech samples. There's speech that I don't recognize; it's in Japanese, so I can't understand it, but I can tell that Omochao is talking about "Eggman robot". Also, Sonic's saying something about parties and other things I don't know. Well, there is some Engrish. "Let's rock!" "Let's goOo!" "Hey guy! Take care!" (Big Foot?) "Ok! Come on!" "Here we go!" "Fiiiirrrre!" What is he, Terry Bogard? I'm pretty sure none of these are ever used, but I normally play SA2 with English voices, so maybe I missed them. But I'm positive they aren't used in the trial. I'll upload the voices later.

Cutscene text has nothing special. Only the one cutscene is in there. The mission text file is filled with <NO MISSION> with the exceptions of some blank missions and the trial's "Find the Goal Ring" mission. In the text for the action window, in the TEXT_E.BIN file, Sonic Wind is replaced with "Long-range homing". (Interstingly, the speech for Sonic Wind is in the trial.) With Tails' and Robotnik's attacks, Laser Missile is "Shotgun Missile" and Rocket Launcher and Power Laser and missing, with "Energy Ball" in their place. The action called "attack" in the final is called "slap" in the trial (Robotnik's Chao Garden attack?), and the 2P attack names for Rouge, Shadow, Big, and Chao Walker are missing. The list of upgrades that's in the file I posted previously stop at "[EWALKER]POWERGUN" in the trial.

In a related note, I noticed that the little jingle in SA2B when a stat levels up is in SA2. It's called "CHAO_K_NET_FINE.ADX". There's also a "CHAO_K_NET_CONNECT.ADX" and a "CHAO_K_NET_FAULT.ADX". (And, for some odd reason, there are two copies of the kindergarden music, CHAO_K_M.ADX and CHAO_K_M2.ADX)

I know SA2 backwards and forwards. I have compared the game script to this script. Here are the changes, separated by hyphens.
    -------------------
    DARK SIDE STORY

"Aaah, Amy you're timing is impeccable!" -- Mispelling of "your"
    -----------------
    Missing dialogue:

"We may be partners, but this
    doesn't mean I trust you!

    Bad day or what?

Tell me, where are the rest
    of the Chaos Emeralds?"

-- From above "23:00 ARK: Central control room" text

    -------------------
Missing dialogue from Eggman's view of the battle between the Egg Golem and Sonic:

"Not me, you idiot! I said go
    after that blue hedgehog, Sonic!"

-- From above "14:58 In the pyramid"

    -------------------
"Hmmm, I'll guess I'll just take the
last pieces of the Master Emerald!"

    Should be:

"Hmmm, I'll guess I'll just have to take the
last pieces of the Master Emerald!"

From above "ARK: Central control room Cannon countdown: 2 hours 11 minutes"
    -------------------
"If that's what you thought, you
    should have given me them

    in the first place!

    Finally!

    I'm sorry...if I hurt you."

Missing is a "What?" from Rouge between "Finally!" and "I'm sorry...if I hurt you."
    -------------------
    Missing from the GAME:

    "Farewell! Sonic the Hedgehog!

    bwooosh! (SE)

    It's not fair, Eggman!

    Sonic..."

The "It's not fair, Eggman!" is not in the game.

    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    HERO SIDE STORY

"There's a dead end up ahead.
    Spread out and find them!"

Unheard in the FMV, but Amy looks behind her like she did hear it.
    -------------------
I THINK this is in the game, not sure:

"Tails! I found the control room.

Got it! I'll destroy the power supply!

    BOOM! (SE)"
    -------------------
    Missing from the script:

    "Those belong to me. Aahhh!

    Keep your hands to yourself!
    Don't touch me!"

Missing is "What in the world?!" from Rouge between the two lines.
    -------------------
The same "It's not fair, Eggman!" from Dark Side...
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------

    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    -------------------
    LAST SIDE STORY

"What's going on here? Who is that?" is misplaced.
    ---------------
"I'd have done this a long
time ago if I had the chance!

    You're pretty persistent for
    a hedgehog, aren't you!"

Missing is "What do you mean?" by Sonic.
    ------------
    "over here was more dangerous
    than you could ever be!

    No worries egghead!

    What is this?"

"No worries, egghead" is missing from the game.
    -----------
    "The colony was closed down,
probably to keep the prototype" -- script

"The colony was completely shut down,
probably to keep the prototype" -- Game
    ---------------
"Could this be the prototype of
the ultimate life form that was

    supposed to be encapsulated?

    There's no time for this!

    Leave this one to me!"

Missing from the game is "There's no time for this!"
    ------------
And then all the dialogue such as "That's ridiculous! There's no way two hedgehogs can stop the colony now!" that's been mentioned in this topic already.
    -------------
"Nah, I think I'm going to give
this line of work up! Too much
work for too little pay!" -- script

"Nah, I think I'm going to give up
this line of work! Too much
work for too little pay!" -- Game
    -------------

I'm sure that, "What in the world?" had no subtitle in the game.

Anyways, here are the ADX files from the trial. Some files don't open, but those that do, do play correctly.

    ToC:

    File 001-008: Cutscene.
    File 009-067: Omochao
File 066: This is the "Eggman robot" one.
File 070-107: Mostly in-game speech. Chao Garden and 2P included, with speech I've never heard.
    File 92: "Fiiiirrrre!"
    File 109: "Let's rock!"
    File 108-112: I don't recognize this.
    File 113-118: Beat level speech.
File 119-125: I don't recognize this. Boss beaten?
    File 126-173: Mix of everyone.

    The ones that don't open are: EVENT_ADX_00009.adx, 00011.adx, 00011.adx, 00068.adx, 69, 71, 72, 73, 121, 129, 135, 158, 159, 161, 169 and 171 (Winamp says "This is not a valid ADX file").

Also...There are multiple copies/versions of EVENT_ADX_00066.adx (some with different enthusism (sp? O_O), so it might be multiple tries at the same line and they just took the best one and left the others in there for the time being.

How do you extract ADXs from AFS? I have "EVENT_ADX_E.AFS", from inside an ISO I got when I downloaded the Echelon rip so I could play SA2 on Chankast. I want to see if they come out corrupted for me.
