Here is the GHZ boss I programmed back in the summer of 2004. Since it is ported, it works the same as the original Sonic 1 boss. That means I can add the rotating ball to it.

But the problem is, none of use can really make a perfect rotating ball because we don't have the original graphics.

My idea is for you to draw once static frame of the ball without the diamond, which will be non rotating. Then draw 16 frames of diamond spin, that will be placed on top of the static ball. Then I will add rotation. The one who makes the most good looking art will win.

Do NOT pin this. If no one wants to compete, there is no way I am spending time writing a rotating ball.

The winner gets a part of this source code for the boss!

Right, I think I'll actually port the boss code myself If I want it that bad. :P

Thought I can see ICEknight totally jumping on this. Just for the record, it's just the single ball, with the diamond rotating across to the right. The ball itself is what's rotated with the diamond still going to the right, simulating a diagonal scrolling effect.

LOst ported the GHZ Boss to C. It's availiable in an old topic around here. The winner gets some of the source to it.

Well, you'll need to be a programmer to understand the source that you'd get if you win this contest, but if you're already a programmer, then you might as well just port the boss yourself =P

Also, excellent use of the "vertical" dithering commonly seen on Genesis games. That type of dithering works especially well on hardware.

I need to remember that. Final Zone's boss crunshers have that form of dithering

That looks quite good. But shouldn't the "diamond" be a bit lower?

EDIT: Also, can you make that ball with just Sonic's shades of red/brown?

No, you can't, but then the one in the video doesn't either. :P

Cinossu is the winner. The diamond has been corrected though, as I tried to make it animate just like in the movie. Still it uses his art. I will upload it soon. The ball's shade was perfect! Diamond was perfect too!

It would be more accurate if it used the three red colors from the main S1 pallet. Otherwise that would be impossible to put in the real game without messing up other stuff.

(it would have to be the main pallet, because GHZ doesn't have reds)

Wasn't there an unknown unused palette somewhere in the Sonic 1 ROM that had faded reds in it? It could've been loaded specifically for the boss, similar to how certain bosses in Sonic 2 do the same.

EDIT: No there isn't an unknown ununused palette in there, but look at the second palette line for the Green Hill ending..

The (in)famous flowers in the beta were purple, so it was all the likely this was the second palette line in Green Hill at the time that the boss could've had that ball.

Wow that had to be the shortest contest ever. You wait for 1 entry and then declare a winner. What's the point in that?

The point is I don't have time to wait, or to draw the ball myself :P

I don't care about the length, I think it's pretty cool seeing contests on here end.
