Archie Sonic Comic Megathread

Even more news and covers. They're just piling them on us this week.

First, an interview with Ian and editor Paul Kaminski that features the normal #250 cover:

Finally, Sonic 250's solicit is up. The covers for it are in previous posts, if you missed them.

 

Dang. Why does only the semi-canonical cross-over issue get to be a 48 page special? 200 could have benefited from that immensely.

 

So, I got my issue of Sonic Universe #50 in and decided I'd be generous enough to post a panel scan or two for those of you who are curious (except I was lazy and just took a picture instead):

I'd write out a summary of some plot points, but I'm rather lazy at the moment so I'll have to get around to it at some point.

 

See? Not a chatterbox! I see nothing wrong with Metal Sonic talking like this.

Ian did say he was going to do something about "the rotating door of Metal Sonic destruction, though'!"

I am curious as to what direction he was going to take Metal Sonic, since the depiction in this issue was not apparently what he intended to do originally, rather what SEGA wanted Metal to be portrayed as. Regardless, this depiction is actually spot on to what I'm sure many people have been waiting to see Metal Sonic be for the first time in awhile.

Of course he isn't a chatterbox, SEGA stopped Ian. That's the whole point of his apology. My worry is that he felt the need to apologize in the first place.

And even with SEGA intervention, Metal feels... odd. His last line is, paraphrasing, "They will ALL pay!" What is he, Shadow? Why must he go full Metal Gear Solid, going on and on about BROTHEEERRR? Is Ian trying to make him like Heroes? Doesn't seem so, he's not really schizophrenic.

It really just reeks of Ian not knowing how to do menace and personality without speech. And I'm normally not this acid on Flynn, but this is really rubbing me the wrong way.

Picked up my copy today. Awesome issue.

However was a bit bummed that

the extra pages were devoted to an issue 25 reprint when I already have a copy of the original!

 

Overall that was a pretty sweet issue. Shame they devoted so many of the pages to a reprint, but ah well.

It seems weird Metal Sonic keeps his different personality despite not having the power gem anymore. The whole idea was that the power gem is what allowed both of them to develop something besides a monotonous execution of their programming, so it seems weird the rebuilt Metal still retains the personality. I'm guessing he's just going the NICOLE route and not being dependent on an exterior power source; it merely got the ball rolling for sentience in his case.

What I'm really liking is that this leaves some hope for Shard. Shard's gem is cracked, and his gem is his heart, his soul, his brain, all in one. They basically have left us thinking he died, but if Metal could keep his semblance of a personality after a few hours of most being exposed to a Power Gem, logically Shard could have somehow preserved his consciousness in his body's programming as well. We can hope, anyway. Either way we can give Ian kudos for having the guts to kill off a pretty well-received character. It takes serious commitment to be able to kill off important cast members.

The inclusion of Issue 25 basically seems to be saying that Issue 250 is "the beginning and end of Shard." Sad really.

OHHHHHHH!!! Oh ho, HOLY SHIT!!!!! WOW, I mean I get why Flynn would do this as Tails Doll was always the subject of rumors and Creepypasta fuel but DAMN. That's gonna be one hell of an issue!

Oh god PLEASE don't let Shard be dead! I've really grown to like this character, I mean I figured that he'd go down in a fight but so soon? I mean I know this is Flynn we are talking about here but MAN until we know for sure this is gonna bug me. But I'll give him this, he's got me hook lined and sinker in this isssue, it's a REALLY good issue. If Shard is down and out I'll be down a bit, but at least he'll have gone out fighting, just a little too soon in my book. Hey, maybe he'll get a body upgrade that has his power gem tucked into his chest area more, because having a VERY VISIBLE "FUCK ME" Gem looks like a Big Core's core from Gradius, in hind sight isn't really a good idea to have out in the open. Chuck must be kicking himself right now..."Oops".

I think the joke is he's using "psychic" as a verb :v:
