So basically this is another one of archies big plot excuses for a major revamp.

That, and a good way to celebrate Sonic's birthday.

More or less. It's been Ian's schtick since the beginning of his tenure with Archie to smooth out the ugly wrinkles in the comic's history, and using Genesis as a way to give the original Freedom Fighters a serious intro (Rather than the old-school laugh-a-page comic style back in the 90s) AND to probably retcon the current Robotnik into being THE Robotnik is just another way for him to streamline the comic.

+ - Oh, and to bring Sally back. Because she's way too damn important to the comic to permanently kill off.

Maybe Sally has to die and be resurrected to completely cleanse her of the damage Penders did to her personality and character.
Y'know, just like Knuckles had to die to end that moronic bullcrap with him turning green.

    Tis but a theory, however.

Endgame was a major hinge in the series; I doubt he'll want to ret-con Robotnik and Eggman together, there'll be a lot between Endgame and the Sonic Adventure adaption that could create even worse issues in continuity.

Sally will not die under Flynn's pen. He is a big fanboy of her, considering her the perfect girl and the perfect match for Sonic. This is most likely to rile up the fanbase and try to get more people to pick up the comic, either by curiosity or by outrage. For example, in the Sega forums there are around five or so people at the comic sections at all times. Since yesterday, there are thirty of them. Same for the Sonic Stadium thread, which has had significant traffic since AKR leaked the spoilers. She'll be back after the summer, in all her Mary Sue glory.

Maybe he can get rid of that silly "Mobius" concept that's long since past its prime, and put it back on Earth like the games are? Hey, if you're going to reboot the continuity, anything's fair game.

+ - Yes I'm aware I'm the only one in the universe who actually gives a shit about the planet's name

It's always been Mobius, that's one of the defining things of the comics. Mobius is Earth, just in the distant future.

Pretty much this, it's one of the few aspects still left over from the SatAM days (besides the shells of the characters that populated the tv series). Not to mention that it was what they had to go on due to the American manuals (at least Sonic CD's). At this point, I don't think it matters enough to change.

No you're not, in my mind I like to imagine they all live on Earth and it's King Acorn's kingdom that's called Mobius.

Not good enough. They're still calling it "Mobius" regardless, and every mention of it tends to take me out of the comic entirely, dredging the whole "it's not Mobius any longer" issue to the forefront of my mind. It's a holdover from SatAM, yes, but not one I find especially welcome, and one I'd rather go away with any proper reboot. (Disregarding that we'll be at status quo within a few months anyway...)

    Yes, I'm pedantic. :colbert:

I never got this reasoning. So many defend that Mobius had to be used because it was in a couple of manuals but then accept that everything else that appeared in such manuals / games and that wasn't used is also okay? The Sonic CD adaptation had no resemblence whatsoever with what happened. Robotization was adapted from another spinoff, not what happened in the games either. The only common point between the comic and game emeralds were their names for a long time. Including the name Mobius wasn't because they had to. It was because they personally liked the name / concept.

Oh, drama! There are about 4-5 Sally fans that are entertaining the hell out of me since Sunday. Threatening to quit the comic, blaming other pairings or Sega Japan, writing walls of text detailing all their angst, threatening to kill themselves and doing emo fanart. I expected entertaining from the haters too, but most aren't taking the bait and don't give a shit about it.

No...I'm pretty sure they used the name Mobius because they had to. At first, I mean. The comic was done in the same way so many other tie-in comics of the time were done, using the television shows as their basis. Just like how Archie's TMNT series was originally based on the animated show. Sure, that comic went a completely different route, but you can argue that the Sonic series did as well. It started off as some weird hybrid of SatAM and AoStH (leaning more toward the latter) and then when Ken Penders took over and the fate of the Saturday morning show was in the air, it started leaning towards the former. So...I don't see where the comic would have not used the name Mobius. Especially since the name of the planet was concocted by Sega of America when they were localizing the first game, predating the shows and every other western tie-in.

I suppose they could have dropped the name when they were making Sonic Adventure and the Japanese game continuity was finally showcased in the west, but if they were going to do that, they should have switched up the comic at the same time. However, not everyone at Sega of America or Archie wanted to give up on those characters yet. And instead of rebooting, they just tried to plow through and introduce concepts that just didn't make sense in the SatAM based world, even if the comic was never that close to SatAM to begin with.

I don't know what this reboot will necessarily after the Genesis arc, but I feel like one of the last things everyone should be focused on is the name of the planet. Even the Ben Hurst admitted that the SatAM world of Mobius was Earth in the future, just done in a very different manner than what Ken Penders ended up doing. We wouldn't even be using the word "Mobius" if Sega of America thought for one second that people wouldn't be so utterly confused is Sonic could actually exist on the planet Earth. Does everyone freak out because Mickey Mouse lives on Earth? No. Heck, the "original western story" was going to have everything take place in Nebraska, of all places...then they switched it to Mobius for no good reason. Sure, I could argue that they didn't have to change the story at all, but that's another topic entirely...

Unless you're arguing that people say the Mobius name had to be used because they were directly adapting the comic from the games. Which they weren't. I don't know anyone who has ever argued that...the only reason they made "game adaptations" is because Sega told them to, and they never tried to make it all that close to what happened in the game. Except for Sonic Adventure, of course.

I'm not against Archie naming the planet Mobius nor do I feel it wasn't justified. My problem with it is due to the rest that was in the manuals / games and did not made it in like Mobius did. The writers had preferences of what things made into the comic and what didn't.

Mobius' name never bugged me, so long as it was a similar whimsical environment as in the games series. The only big difference was made when they tried to use realistic gritty scenery, and even then the games went even further with that later on.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
Why does the name of the planet matter, anyway? It's Sonic's screwed-up fantasy world one way or another.

It's something like that, but switch based on the games with based on the SOA / SOE story. There are some who that defend that the name should be kept because it's some kind of Sega west relic when that's not the reason why it made it into the show / comics, otherwise other things would have made it in and clearly didn't. It was a personal preference of the writers and defending its inclusion because it was west canon but then turning a blind eye to everything else like Robotization or Chaos Emeralds being clearly different never clicked well with me.

The name of the planet by itself doesn't bother me at all. It could be named Planet Freedom for all I care. It's the double standards that irk me.

Then there's the hand in hand insistance that the spinoffs were somehow west canon too, but that's another can of worms I'd rather not open.

I was only really bothered when they tried to make it a realistic depiction of Earth with photo accurate cities and humans. That's more a cosmetic involved change than anything to do with the name.
