This is not a "look at me I'm making a hack and I have a really big penis" topic.
I'm just asking for advice on how to manage such a project as a hack.
I believe I have a good concept but what's the best way to organise it.
Also, does anyone know about hacking on pre OSX mac?

I can answer the second question, I don't think there is any pre-OSX hacking tools and I don't thnk the demand will be big enough for them, sorry mate.

    Welp, this.
I think there's a SMD-BIN converter and maaaaybe a palette editor for Mac OS 9, though I'm not really sure where you'd get either at the moment. You may have some luck poking around Zophar for Mac utilities as well. However, I hope you enjoy your text editor and making lots of folders as far as organization goes. :/

  4. Well, First make sure you have a storyline/plan on what you're going to do. Don't be random and do 'whatever' whenever you feel like. Look around for good hackers who may be interested in your hack, (Puts up hand) and finally, be patient, don't act bossy, and be nice =P

The most important question here is what kind of hack are you talking about? How far in depth does the hack go -- will it have all new levels and different things, or what? Give us some details and we will be able to give some good advice in return.

I have a rough storyline, it involves non-voluntary time travel,

Act 1. Travel through present to reach warp to future.
    Bonus Round ??
Act 2. Travel through future to reach item, fight boss?? collect item. Warp to the past.
    Bonus Round ??
Act 3. Travel through past to return item to it's rightful place, peace in the Zone is restored.

I would Sonic 1 as a base, so Green Hill-Present-Future-Past. In terms of artwork, I have been playing a lot of 8-bit games recently and would hope to take influence from there, IMO there are a lot a great ideas in the GG titles. As for the Bonus Round that would happen during the warp, same as a special stage but with out emeralds, just bonus items. I enjoy the Sonic 1 special stages and I think this could get a bit more life and variety out of them.
Level design is very important to me, it's something so vital to a good hack.

  7. If you need to use hacking tools that aren't available for OSX, I recomend looking for a program called "Darwine" it's a version of WINE for OS X and it should let you run programs as simple as Genesis hacking programs with no problem. And in case you don't know what WINE is, it's a compatibility layer that allows you to run Windows executables on other operating systems.

Your concept sounds ambitious, but not overly ambitious for a first hack. I like that. I find that I get all details about gameplay on paper first.. figure out what I want to do so it's to the point where I can almost play it in my mind and then I write it down. I always start with a text document with basic ideas and run from there. Therefore I have two initial folders: concept and game. Later I generally use the concept folder for work.. such as ripped art that I'm going to port, etc. Split disassemblies make this very easy to work with and pre-organize a lot for you to start.

Like I said, I like your concept. =) I wish you the best of luck in making it a reality <3

  9. You should draw things like I did, I've drawn levels before I even knew this was possible! =P I like the concept though :O
