I looked for a topic on this and saw nothing, and thought I'd bring it to people's attention, but someone is selling (to what I assume, E-122-Psi's hack) Mighty the Armadillo for Sonic 1 for the Megadrive. I do not know the seller, but anyone know about this? Surely this is illegal? Feel free to trash if this is already known about or I have missed anything.
There are a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog hacks for sale at the Chinese shop http://www.aliexpress.com/ .They all come from there. Just fill in the search form with any hack's name and have fun. Spoiler
This topic title is weird. I almost thought Mighty's character itself was being sold for some reason.
Overseas market pirates hacks onto carts, sells them. Nothing to see here. This is actually how Sonic 2 Beta got out in the wild anyway. It's also not too far from commissioning people on places like Etsy or other sites to make re-prog carts of hacks or other games that were never released in your region. That's how I have a U.S. Genesis copy of Mega Man Wily Wars and an SNES cart of Mega Man and Bass in English. It's technically illegal, but the technology is so old that most companies cannot be bothered to chase it down and squash it. Not worth the effort and legal expenditures.
Nintendo seems to chase these sort of things no matter what =P I've never seen this sort of thing on ebay before, that's why I flagged it up. I was "sort off" aware there would be other sites selling this sort of stuff, but I had no idea it was that common (you learn something new everyday). I wonder how many people actually buy these? As for the topic title, I didn't mean to mis-lead anyone.
I know Nintendo is strict, but they don't hit everybody. It cost money to sue and some companies just ain't worth the time and expenses, it's more fun to make a profit when you sue.
That explains a lot. Nintendo are more financially stable than SEGA so they can be more strict. Am I right in saying Nintendo have a funny on if you make mods of their old games, even without selling them?
Financial stability doesn't have a lot to do with it, Nintendo were more rabid about this than Sega even back in the days when the Mega Drive & SNES were active systems. Just a corporate thing.
Probably because they had more resources and a bit more to lose, so I think your financial situation is pretty important.
While there isn't really a cut-off point, I don't ever see these things being high priority targets, for the same reason we don't cover all the fan-made reproductions and custom covers you can get on the internet. But we're always open to older stuff though. Get yourself over to Mecardo Libre and start cropping.
Well, you have more of a choice now. you can buy Shadow in Sonic 1, Vector, Knuckles and Sally Acorn in Sonic 1. On the back of the boxes, he even has the creators name under copyright. You're now part of this, Stealth, E-122-Psi and others! =P Another interesting one that has popped up on ebay (same seller) is this hack called Sonic Code Gray which on the back, it even has the Sonic Retro logo: So the whole of us are now involved! How naughty are we? Other games that are now up are The S Factor, Sonic Megamix (which also has the Sonic Retro logo)... actually, a load of them have suddenly sprung up overnight. I'm shocked that so many have suddenly appeared and I'm only noticing it now.
