So somehow Landstalker slipped through the cracks of my Megadrive collection. I only stumbled upon it listening to Megadrive music on youtube. After playing for about 15 minutes it became painfully obvious just how close the setting & music is like the Shining Force Series, particularly Shining Force 2. I'm not going to ask if the universes are the same, because it seems like those discussions have been had somewhere else, but I was more interested just how closely these games were developed. On the wikipedia article for Camelot Software, it actually mentions that the two companies were formed alongside each other to make Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force 1. What it doesn't mention is the connection between the later games at all. You should check similarities with Alundra instead... http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/alundra/images/c/c5/Alundra_artwork.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100921203612 http://landofys.com.ru/images/action-rpg/landstalker/landstalker_nigel.jpg
The sound similarities are because they have the exact same composer, Motoaki Takenouchi, naturally. He also did Jewel Master.
Yeah. if there's anything weird about the overworld music, it's that the first half sounds more like something that Masahiko Yoshimura might have done, which makes me wonder if Takenouchi was basing it off an unused tune from one of those two games he did (Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force); The first 40 seconds are in a completely different style from the rest of the song and loop almost cleanly.
