That's a bit harsh... He's just pointing out the facts. It'll be harder to find one for Sonic 1, simply because not a lot of info was released early on. He's not ruling out the possibility, though.

 

It's true that they probably couldn't scrap anything, but at the same time they couldn't use ALL of it. It would make for a really crappy or rushed looking game if every original concept was used, which is why we have a Sonic 2 beta. Some ideas are better forgoten than used, no matter how much they are needed. All hope is not lost.

EDIT: And another thing, an MD cart can only hold so much, I'm betting they had at least one extra level that couldn't quite fit on it and HAD to scrap it.

 

Well, I hate to concur, but of course it's uber unlikely. I mean, it was pretty much luck and chance that Simon got dibs on the S2Beta in the first place. But hey, who knows, maybe someone else could get as lucky?

Honestly, I would prefer a Sonic 3/k proto or Knuckles' Ringstar.

 

If I remember, there was a so called Sonic 3 'prototype', but it was just the final without the save feature (I think that component wasn't implemented into the cart physically yet). Anyway I, and about every other person in this community would like to find an older beta of Sonic 1, but as you noted its not very likley.

 

I don't think a Sonic 3 proto would be as exciting as a Sonic 1 proto, or a Chaotix proto with Sonic playable or something like that. I mean, all of the levels that didn't make the cut into Sonic 3 just wound up being put into Sonic & Knuckles anyway, right? There were no zones advertised in magazines/the gaming media that didn't make it into one game or the other, right?
While I'm all for finding a Sonic 1 beta, I agree with lostgame's logic. The game would have been far more secretive, and thus fewer older prototypes would have been released.

 

I do know someone who *claims* to have an S1 proto, and I nag at them constantly to send it, but apparently they're not allowed. They seem genuine but I've yet to see any pics so they could be bsing (no offence if you're reading this )

Alright, guys, I have to tell ya. It's getting hard to kinda keep to myself.

I found a beta. I'm getting it dumped as soon as I build the dumper. In less than a month's time, we will have another S2 Beta. This version has a different CNZ and Wood Zone, Hidden Palace Zone looks rather gently fucked, and Dust Hill Zone doesn't lead to Mystic Caves.

 

The only known Sonic 3 'prototype' is the cart owned by LocalH. It's the finished game, but with no battery-backed RAM; this is the format games from the era would be sent to magazine publishers as.

It's like a cross between the defunct HPZ and the HPZ from the beta. If chickens gave birth to beta zones and you got a pig to hump a chicken, that's pretty much how it looks. *shot*

 

You know, we're lucky to just have the Sonic 2 Beta...think about it. In order for that to have been leaked to begin with, we're dependent on one single person. If that one guy never did that, we wouldn't have a Sonic 2 prototype. I think that's pretty lucky.

 

Yea, that's what'd I like to see. Was'nt there a picture that showed the beta with Sonic 2 sprites?

 

Yeah and now I'm inclined to agree, since the reaction to me mentioning this was nowhere near as bad as it could have been, and now apparently he's offended by your reaction and I'm now "not going to get even close to my beta due to thair rudeness."
