He was referring to the time when he was initially programming the original Sonic The Hedgehog, he never mentioned anything regardling later titles, just putting it out there.

That actually would make a lot of sense -- that might be why they still only save continue count after special stages in unhacked Sonic 3 -- they didn't expect the player to be getting continues through that bonus stage.

The part where sonic is standing looks great, I love me some hexagons, but the repeating pattern in the brown part of the foreground looks a little weird. What sort of effect are you going for with it?

Checkerboard. Either way it is simple filler for empty spaces. The plan is to have more detailed stuff covering it.

(Mind the volume; it's too loud!)

What could this be, I wonder?
Hint: + - I only have one controller plugged in and wouldn't use my keyboard on SA2 ever

Here's another hint, but it kinda gives it away. =P
    (See description for details)

I would've uploaded more footage but I almost didn't upload that video as it is. My internet is so painfully slow you have no idea

Hey, that's pretty interesting! I have to wonder, though, what kind of information are you sending over? I know it can't be controller input because that would be unfeasible without actively halting the game to compensate for latency, and well, the fact that Shadow homes in on the air a few times in that clip. :P So I'm guessing it's character position, angle and at least part of the animation data?

Would be interested in learning more about this, definitely!

In regards to the player specifically, I'm sending speed, angle and position (which can be troublesome at times) all in one go, and action/status/animation in one go (although animation isn't very effective). I'm also sending upgrades (so you can, for example, give yourself the bounce bracelet), powerups (shields etc; although I seem to have broken it(?)), and of course ring count.

I reeeeally wish I could send input though. Dealing with the menus is not easy without it. Although character selection works, both players have to select the battle mode (e.g race) manually, as well as the stage. Shooting is basically unplayable unless you just want to play Bumper Mechs™, as shooting relies entirely on input and the player's action never changes. On top of that, emerald hunting won't work out either since the emerald locations are seemingly randomized (from a list of available locations of course).

    In fact, there's a moderately sized list of things that simply don't or won't work, like 2P specials (which suck anyway, but still) ;_;

On the note of the stage, you'll probably notice that sometimes players get a head start (which has to do with load times). I had compensation for that implemented, but I broke it somewhere down the line which is why we restarted the stage once or twice, so I've gotta fix that. Worked really nicely when it did, though! =P

    I came.

Also, I thought about how little, well, nothing, I've shown of my hack. I don't plan to change that, aside from posting these two images, one of which being an amusing glitch:
The O-Zone layer is thinning. (Yes, this is the glitch; there's actually nothing coded for the level slot here. The O looking right is a coincidence).

The second one is blatantly showing a WIP feature:

Don't expect to see much more than this; I've been on the hunt for a spriter as of late and haven't have much success.

What's your progress so far? While I'd rather not be tied to making another whole sheet, I might be able to use it to help with some basic poses.

I heartily support any *insert character* In Sonic 1 projects.

1: It's actually a Sonic 2 hack, and Sonic and Tails are still there. Blaze is just a third option.

2: Shamefully, I'm using a sprite sheet from TSR with some modifications to actually work on Genesis hardware (The original sheet was actually way to colorful). The advantage to this is that about 80% of the needed poses are present.

If you're still interested, hit me up via PM, please.

  12. Back on the scene, working on a special stage hacking project. I do want to show off some of my custom art.

It took me two weeks to make all this stuff, down to the last pixel. Of course, these blocks look almost Sonic 4-ish, except for the wall blocks, which I just simply re-shaded. Some feedback would be nice if you would provide it. Thank you.

As I've said before, those blocks and stuff look very nice, I really love the extensive use of black and white as an extra shade element of every colors, that's what you call clever colour use.

I like the vibrant shading, has an almost Knuckles Chaotix style to it.

  15. This is an updated version, compared to the previous one shown on SSRG.

I really love this new artwork, however I've noticed that on the blue "!" icon, there's a few pixels that aren't colored in. Just fix that and then it'll be complete in my eyes. Also how come you haven't shown off the video here? It's really cool to see that you've added the HUD to the special stage. :) I look forward to your hack.

  17. I haven't started actual gameplay videos yet, but I will show them off at a later time. Speaking of the blue "!" block, I will double check it to make sure it's shaded properly, but I do feel that everything is colored in after I zoomed in to check. I still have to finish up the results screen and alter the palette of the BG. And music-wise, I want to use Sonic 2's HPZ music, but that will come last. And other than the HUD, my hack also has 7 special stages in it with the 7th emerald being cyan. Do keep in mind that this is only a special stage hack, even though the rest of the game is still intact.

Your avatar banner gives me nightmares.

  19. This is a test video of the 7th stage of the hack with everything updated. (I tried to embed the video)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD6WjqVB8X8

These shots below are updates of the results screen:

This looks more appropriate than just "SPECIAL STAGE". Plus, I removed the ovals and made the BG color dark blue to make everything visually stand out better.

I was gonna make it say "KNUCKLES GOT A CHAOS EMERALD", but it would've seemed senseless since failing a stage with emeralds in hand nets me that message too.

If I might make a suggestion, why don't you use the the change found earlier in this thread to make the special stage rotation smoother? With your new art (which is beautiful by the way), the choppy rotation feels really shoddy.
