I notice however that you have Masher turning round when he begins to fall down the waterfall again. In the original he didn't do that. I just felt like pointing that out.

There's only one major problem for myself: I never really played the SMS games of Sonic, except for maybe the first level, and I don't like to play hacks without having playing the original before, which is why I probably won't play your game.

 

Maybe you should try the SMS Sonic games, I think they're pretty enjoyable!

 

Except for the whole "no rings during bosses" part. Still love them though, with Sonic Chaos being my favorite.

 

So you're gonna pass the opportunity of playing an interesting game (a recreation of the Sonic 2 you do know in 8-bit) just because you don't know its "origins"? That's fucked up.

There are very few hacks in this community that can grab my attention, and when they do it's not because of how they compare to the game they are based on, it's because they are fun to play. The final product is what matters.

Anyway, if not having played the original game is such a deal breaker for you (as fucked up as that sounds), you still have time to get acquainted with it until the release of this hack. Like JaxTH, I also like Chaos better, but 1 and 2 are also very enjoyable games (much more so than sonic 4, IMO).

I think that's because the likes of Brazil has a massive SMS player base. Looks like you've gonna be pleasing alot of people.

I might be able to patch in the spindash code in some minimal fashion. The limiting factor here is the fact that we're hacking around in a flat binary file. Some of the more involved mods (e.g. new badniks & other engine enhancements) are going to nigh on impossible without moving over to the disassembly.

I personally can't wait until the beta gets released. Can't believe it's been over 2 years since this hack was started (feels like yesterday), but it's looking to be worth it!

 

On the bright side, since eggfan didn't shift anything and only changed bytes, it should be possible to get a complete log of the changes he made by comparing the original ROM to the hacked one, and then the same changes could be easily applied to the disassembly, right?

 

I can't say where eggfan got his copy from, but I got the VGZ from the genesis music thread in April 2008. Lots of good stuff in there.
