I'd like to think there's at least some difference between "husband beating up wife" and "company releasing game some people find fun but others don't".
Oh, I agree with you. I love Sonic 1 way more than Sonic 2. However, possibly due to Super Sonic and the Spindash, I'm enjoying Sonic 4 more than I did Sonic 1. In fact the most likely reason is that Sonic 1 is slower than some of the other games - not that that's a bad thing, but I don't find it as satisfying to be honest. That said, I like the feel of Sonic 1's physics much more than Sonic 4's. I hope to god Sega/Dimps fixes that for Episode 2, that's my only major complaint.
So you like the spindash and Super Sonic, and Sonic 1's physics, but you don't like Sonic 2? I also have a question related to your sig. How do you hate LLZ2 but still like the mine cart?
I never wound up buying Sonic 4, but I did play through the whole thing at my friend's house (Bar one emerald) and I didn't mind the physics much. There were times where we encountered some pretty ridiculous shit such as Sonic standing completely straight on 90 degree angles and whatnot, and the controls did feel pretty stiff at times, but I enjoyed it and thought that the level design was the best we've seen since S3&K.
Are there any known differences between the PSN, XBLA and WW (except for the lower res on this one) releases of this game?
I think you mean the Wii version. The 360 and PS3 versions got a lighting change during the delay, but the Wii one looks fine still. It works for MGZ3 and maybe in LLZ cause those levels are so dark, but looks awful otherwise.
The lighting actually looks a lot nicer in the 360 version. Nice and bright. And the shades on Sonic don't look bad.
This. He seems overly bright and plastic-y in the 360 version while too flat on the Wii. The PS3 one has a pretty decent balance.
I like them all, but I hate how the Wii version's rings look. I mostly play on the iPod now, since I devote all my 360 time to Fallout: New Vegas. But I only have one achievement left for Sonic 4, and I don't want to defeat 1000 enemies. That will take a long time. The iPod version's Sonic model is ugly as fuck.
I prefer the lighting in the Wii/PS3 versions. The Xbox version looks like Sonic's been greasing himself up.
In terms of differences, none of the three really have anything worth mentioning - so Sonic looks a bit shinier on the Xbox 360, I'm not too fussed. I know it's been a while since I've really made an effort to post on Retro, but I thought I should at least give my impressions of Sonic 4, given that I was one of the few actually looking forward to it. My enthusiasm stands, I love this game. Okay, the physics aren't totally in-line with what most of us would have wanted, but the game has some great level design and I'm finding it really fun to just replay the levels, which is the mark of a decent Sonic game in my mind. Hell, even with the different engine I can still pull off a lot of the cool little speed tricks that were possible in the Mega Drive series. For instance, jumping on the third quarter of a loop to hit the bottom and get more speed is still possible, if timed right. I'm just cracking away at the achievements now. I still need to set times for the Final Zone and the Special Zones and then not get hit during the Final Zone... That last one sounds like it's going to be difficult, the third and fourth bosses are pretty tough to get a perfect kill on.
(late reply kill me) About Sonic 2: I'm not sure what it is, but I just can't get into Sonic 2 like I can the rest of the series, S4 included. I just can't put my finger on why but I'm pretty sure it's the level design and the special stages. As much as I try to, I just can't have as much fun with is as the other games. About my own sig: Thanks for pointing that out, I just realized how much I screwed up there. I meant to say CSZ2, not LLZ2. Shit.
I notice that a lot of games on the 360 for better or worse tend to look shinier than their PS3 counter parts while the PS3 version of games tend to look more realistic. I'd give some examples, but I gtg. >_>
Surprised no one mentioned it, but I believe the instrumentation is different on the WiiWare release.
