Ok so a lot of people don't like this Sonic game as much as the other four sidescrolling Sonic games before it on Game Gear. I found it quite enjoyable as it's the Game Gear's equivalent to having a Sonic & Knuckles since those are the characters you get.

The problem I am coming across is it's rarity. Since it was one of the last Game Gear games ever to be released and most people moved on from the system and didn't buy it, it seems to be harder to find, especially complete.

Every time I try to look online for a complete copy of the game, I'm lucky if I even see more than a few loose copies. Are the box and instructions for this game really that much rarer than other game gear games?

But let's go even beyond that. It seems most Game Gear games are harder to find complete than most other common systems I've seen (unless the particular title had been re-released by majesco like Sonic Spinball). Either everyone always threw their boxes away or somebody is hoarding them all for themselves.

So what does everyone think about Game Gear in general as a system, about Sonic Blast as a video game, or have to say about the CIB shortage when it comes to collecting for the system? I'm curious how many other people are having as much of a problem finding the complete game as I am. It can't be as bad as the US copy of Sonic 1 for SMS can it?

I like the game, myself. It has quite a few flaws, but it's fun nonetheless. As for the Game Gear itself, I really like it. It ate batteries like a beast, but the games (especially the sonic sidescrollers and the Tails games) were excellent. I still find myself playing Tails Adventure quite often.

My opinions of it in a haiku.

    Kinda slow gameplay
Graphics take up the whole screen
    Fun afternoon, though.

I hate the physics and the graphics, but the final boss has some wicked music.

The game itself was alright. Had a bit of fun playing it on Gems Collection.

Or SADX, whichever it was. :psyduck:

I want to raise one point though; this game has some awesome underrated music. Probably some of my FAVORITE songs in the whole Game Gear series.

It's enjoyable if you keep your expectations low.. music definitely surprised me, too.

Not sure if it's particularly "valuable" in any regard though

I love the Game Gear! It's the platform that introduced me to Sonic (UGZ boss damn youuuu!!!), and though I have all my Game Gear favorites on my laptop, and in Sonic Adventure DX, I still continually opt to play them on the handheld.

I once read in a magazine that game collectors really don't like the Game Gear, because

    A) Aside from a few titles made specifically for the handheld, it's still essentially a portable Master System, so most collectors believe MS to be more worth their investment.

    B) Early Game Gear packaging was notoriously flimsy, designed in such a way that the cardboard hanging tag sticks out of a hole the shrinkwrap, so the boxes were poorly defended from dust and moisture. It was also hard to get a game out of the box without damaging the box itself, so the boxes were often trashed. So yeah, good luck finding a copy in mint shape with the box and manual.

    C) As the apathy towards the system increased, games that were announced for release were later quietly canned by publishers, and nobody took up the task of identifying which games were and were not actually released for it, so the collecting community can't agree on what games exist. U.S., EU, and Japanese Game Gear games were also interchanging territories... which confused collectors even more, trying to sort out which carts belong in which territories. True story, I once bought a copy of Sonic & Tails 2 at a K-Mart, thinking it was an all-new Sonic, only to discover it was just Sonic Triple Trouble with a different label on the cart. There was no box, no manual, it was just repackaged in K-Mart-designed plastic packaging. I later traded that game with a friend for a copy of GG Sonic 1.

As for Sonic Blast, it's the only 2D Sonic game that I outright dislike. I just couldn't play it for protracted periods without turning it off and taking a break from those garish graphics. And that Blue Marine level was just infuriating. It's not the worst Sonic game (not even the worst on Game Gear... Labyrinth... ), but I certainly don't get the nostalgic impulse to play it again the way I do the other GG Sonic sidescrollers.

I actually enjoyed Sonic Blast, but I could never beat the first act of that water level. The currents could never take me where I wanted it to. :psyduck:

The game is wholly irredeemable in my opinion. I've been known to say that the "G" in the tile (it's called "G Sonic" in Japan, inanely) must stand for "godawful".

I give them points for attempting a pre-rendered style on such a crappy system, though, as misguided as it was.

It's a worse game then Shadow.

    Nice music though (as always).

I find it really difficult to play Sonic games on the Game Gear, since the screen's so blurry. I'm not too keen on this game anyway. I've tried emulating it and playing it on Sonic Mega Collection +.

All I remember was finally unlocking this game in SA:DX (I think, anyway) and rage-quitting soon afterwords. I've made fangames in MMF that play better than that crap. Oh yes, that's right, I went there.

Can't say I remember the music either... Guess that speaks volumes about how good it is, eh? :v: Feel free to prove me wrong though.

I actually enjoyed the game all the way through with all the emeralds. My favorite zone in the game is Red Volcano Zone and although the water level is frustrating it's still cool once you find the strategy to get past it. I also found the special stages to be fun.

Hmm maybe I should try posting a want ad for this game CIB on ebay and see if I can convince anyone to cough theirs up for me if I pay high enough. I was hoping maybe someone on the board here had it but hated the game enough to be convinced. I'll just be keeping my eyes peeled. Must... complete... collection. I have all 4 other Sonic Game Gear platformers complete so I want to finish the arc.

If that doesn't work, maybe I can try to find scans of the box's entire body including the sides, then print out and superglue the art onto a dirt common Sonic 2 or Sonic Chaos box then print out every page of the manual (it's cheap black and white anyway) and staple them together. (Just kidding. I can probably wait it out.)

I've only seen it on YouTube. I can't be bothered to download it or collect all the emblems in SADX. From what I can tell the music is okay but the graphics kinda creep me out for some reason. I've only seen the first zone.

I own the game, and I've beaten it. It's been so long ago I can't be much useful and tell you why, but I did not enjoy the game.

  17. I like this game, I had a lot of fun with it. I own the Master System version though. It's weird how badly this game was converted (I guess it's probably because TecToy did it, not SEGA), there are too many hard-to-ignore glitches.

I actually liked the game too, it was under Sonic Triple Trouble, Chaos, and Tails Adventure as my three favorite GameGear titles (in that order) but I actually have fond memories of it. The game is strange and looking back not the most well made but it has a big surreal quality about it which comes from the mixture of the graphics, music, overlarge and strange bosses, and the level design made it seem like something of a dream... That might sound strange but the whole game in my mind came together to have this whole strange surreal quality to it and I actually enjoyed playing the levels. I am not saying "OH MY GOD GUYS ONE OF THE BEST OF THE SERIES!!1!" but I did enjoy it but can understand why others didn't. And yes the water stage was a bitch the first time.

  19. The game is OK, but I've never really warmed up to it. Something about the graphical style and pace really put me off.

As for the Game Gear itself ... I liked it. My oldest sister had one, and Sonic the Hedgehog on Game Gear was actually the first video game I ever played. We didn't invest much into it, because once my parents discovered gaming was something their kids liked, they went out and got a Genesis for us. At the end of the day, I think my sister only had 3-4 games for it (Sonic the Hedgehog, Batman Returns, Ax Battler: The Legend of Golden Axe, and maybe one other that I'm forgetting). So, with the limited sample set, I enjoyed it greatly. In recent years, I've played other games (primarily through emulation), but none of them really grabbed me -- Sonic the Hedgehog and Batman Returns could very well be the two best games on the system, so nothing I ever played later could match them.

I honestly really liked Chaos, the only problem with the game was it was too easy, other than that it was a rather enjoyable game, and I wouldn't mind seeing the level layout or boss designs ported to a Sonic hack.

Chaos on the other hand was okay, until I got to the ocean level.

    :(
