Haven't I seen this exact same thing before? Emeralds unlocking moves? I swear Cinossu or somebody did just that.

 

^ It was Puto with Sonic 1 Remastered, I believe. I thought of the idea, too, given my hack's focus. I just couldn't justify stripping moves away from Sonic without playing the amnesia card or the play-as-a-fancharacter/recolor card, and no matter how well it could have worked in the game I don't think I'd ever be forgiven for it.

That said, if you can make some good moves to unlock, more power to you, Ravenfreak.

 

Yeah, he did that too. You could unlock spindash and peelout from what it know. I think it's in one of his Youtube videos from a newer build.

 

Oh damn, well I guess I could can this project, since I don't want to steal anyone's idea. :\ (Though I added a multi-jump move...)

...there's a difference between stealing and recreating folks! I'm sure the "original idealists" (If there is such a thing) would be interested in seeing how you go about with recreating it =)

 

You know what, you are absolutely correct! :D In that case, well I just uploaded a new video. Here's the "Multi-jump" move I was talking about, it still needs a bit of work though. You can unlock this by obtaining three emeralds. (I still don't think this hack is worthy of it's own thread just yet.)

 

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If we all canned our projects because someone else had done something first we'd be left with about three hacks. It's all about what else you do, and whether there's any point to including them

I was also thinking of Chaos Emeralds unlocking new moves, except they're not Chaos Emeralds.

Tell me, does Sonic 1 remember specifically which emeralds you had or just the amount you had? (Does it remember 'red, blue and green' or '3'?)

 

Pretty sure it remembered the colours. Gather 3 of the emeralds, and you'll see Robotnik at the end juggling the ones you didn't get.

 

Yeah, it remembers the colours. Since each chaos emerald is associated with one special stage, it has to remember which special stages you've completed, and therefore which colour emeralds you already have.

I'm not sure how they're actually stored, but the entire array of which emeralds have/haven't been got can be stored in a single byte.

 

Sonic 1 does this thing.
In RAM location FE57 it stores how many emeralds you got. Then in RAM locations FE58-FE63 it stores the "color" of each emerald, one byte per emerald, "color" 0 being blue. Which is why if you set FE57 to be 6 by hacking, you'll appear to have 6 blue emeralds, as the RAM would read 06 00 00 00 00 00 00.
This is highly redundant, BUT it keeps track of the order in which you collected the emeralds, and is later used when the game decides which special stage to load, in the SS_Load and following subroutines (in the 2005 disassembly).

 

I don't see why they didn't just use a byte and treat it as a bitfield. Using 6 bytes for the collected emeralds is just wasteful.

 

If it's based on Unleashed it can't be really old... :v: Unleashed is still the latest major Sonic game released...
