Still seemed better to me than the Wii version.

    All the bitches.

Like explained multiple times before. Dimps made that game and they are one of the worst developers ever at anything but fighting games.

1280 x 768 version of the screenshot. BMP to PNG, its probably lost some quality on the way... down the side of the sofa or something.

Why does SEGA save stuff as BMP anyway? Clearly PNG is a better format.

I know that. Forget me talking about the engine. Point is...

The Wii version of Unleashed sucked (EDIT: MORE) compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. They scrapped Empire City altogether and just mentioned Mazuri.

To make up for it, they make a Wii-only version that hopefully ISN'T being designed by Dimps.

For the same reason they saved their Unleashed gameplay video as a 500MB UNCOMPRESSED QuickTime .MOV, that happened to become 7MB when converted to Xvid, with no loss of quality.

What on earth? The N64 could've rendered that stage. Tell me this was a typical Sega fluke where they've accidentally uploaded a screenshot from a presently undisclosed iPhone port of the game. That's what this announcement everyone's talking about actually is, isn't it?

We were told about two announcements yesterday. One for Colours, which would (and has) come today. The other is "franchise changing" ([/over-exaggeration]) and will come about on Thursday.

I'm going to hope that's a WIP screen from the last stage they're working on. Everything else about this game has looked great to me, but that shot's kind of disappointing looking.

  13. Doesn't look that bad.
I really don't understand Jims nerdrage on the fact that the game uses flat planes and basic shapes.
We know that, you said it before; move on.
It still looks good for the most part.

No, seriously. It does look bad. I myself could do better, in the freaking Nintendo DS.

Other than that, I belive he was addressing Unleashed, though in this case, the same level designing leads were broght to Colors as well.

Personally, the level objects look of the same quality more or less, it's the background (trees and canyon) thaat look really ugly.

On another note, I might have missed it before, but we have a colour bonus score now? Does this mean that the higher ranks can only be achieved by using the wisps? I don't really care about higher scores much, they said the wisps were optional, so I'm just wondering.

The number of rings displayed as changed too like someone mentioned, that is good.

What is that chain thing? Part of the background for another planet high above? Or is this one upside down and we cant see the Earth?

Three to four multiple paths, that is good as well, which was another of my concerns.

What is that red thing up in the air?

The rocket goes through a determined path? Is that what those black things are there for? If it is so, then that means Sonic is going to travel to the highest point of the stage that we can see. But can he stop the rocket where he wants or is it like the laser, which seems to have a standard range?

What is that five row of frey circle with stars on the right. I've always liked that design from the classic checkpoints and it does remind me of that Maybe it has something to dow the Rocket..

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
They changed the number of digits the ring counter displays when it doesn't need the extra digits. Whether it was four and then became two, or vice-versa, I don't know, but "Two digits when under 99" does not immediately signify "99 rings maximum." For all you know, the hundreds digit doesn't show up until a number has to appear there. A lot of counters do that, even when they show a zero in the tens slot for no real reason.

    Anyway...

Yes, those background graphics are quite fugly. When you stop and look at them, anyway. Like anything low-quality, it's bound to look better in motion. That said, the environment they're going for there looked awesome in CG and would have looked just as awesome even with the "terrible" Hedgehog Engine. Tropical Resort looked great—not necessarily because polygon count was any better, mind, but the graphics were more effective in that instance. This is a clear-cut case of the graphics being used for something they're not quite capable of pulling off just right.

Orange Wisp Rocket Power, though? Do want.

  17. Simple, the Wii version of Unleashed outsold the others so it makes the most since financially to minimize costs and maximize profit. It's also easier to develop for a single console instead of four.

This game just wound up being the game they decided to make for the Wii. They were going to make a Wii-exclusive game anyway—they've been doing it since the Wii came out, remember?--and this wound up being the concept that got used this time 'round. No doubt we'd be getting Sonic and the Death Eaters or something this year if Black Knight had actually been a reasonable success. Not to say this is necessarily a "replacement" for the Storybook Series in the sense that term suggests (we might, for example, get another Storybook game if this one redeems the Wii line's rep like it probably will, and said Storybook game will probably play less like a Storybook game and more like a typical 3D Sonic game—that's what I think'll happen, anyway). Because the tech is so different between consoles this generation, that's just the way it winds up working. We get a Wii game every so often and we get at a 360/PS3 game every so often. If the Wii 2 (or whatever) winds up being on-par with the other consoles, that particular franchise division'll probably phase out of existence, but for now this is what we have.

    Long-term happiness

Don't panic just yet - the reason that looks blocky is because it's an SD Wii shot upscaled to 720p without any smoothing. =P It will look better than that on an actual TV from a Wii - and the shot itself looks neat, really liking what I see of Colours.

  20. Yeah it does look bad, but I'm going to assume that they are WIPs and will be changed eventually. Right SEGA...they ARE going to be changed...AREN'T THEY!

Anyway, the reason it looks bad is because of the type of tecture they chose. It looks like realistic Rock textures. They should have made up their own fantasy Rock-type texture. It wouldn't be this bad if it was on an HD console, seeing as they were designed [sort of] to be able to render realistic shit, but on the Wii; it looks a LOT better when fantastical.
Rocks don't have to be realistic to look good.

I'm no expert here, but I think the low-poly issue is to do with the size of the levels. I mean, they must be pretty huge if you want 5-6 mins of Solid gameplay time per act right (especially considering how fast Sonic moves and how much ground he covers every second)? That must take up a fair amount of memory right? If the levels were smaller they could make higher poly stuff without having to worry about using up Memory.

If somebody knows more please do explain.
